We seem to be the only ones in Oz that deplore charge downs.
QC (Quade Cooper) has far too many of them.
They are avoidable!

My two cents (sitting in our new members seats - Woohoo!!), the game was good in patches with both teams looking to attack with ball in hand. Thought the reds centres were sensational in the first half, with their strong quick defence and good lines/options in attack. I think Ant Fainga'a will struggle have to make run on if CFS gets more game time. Jake Shatz played well, came in and out of the game but that would be through his head knock (it looked as though nearly everyone had one of these during the game!). Simmons did some stupid stuff early, but made up for it later. I see him going to the bench shortly. Ed Quirk was my MOM only just in front of Taps. Saw him toowoomba and was impressed. Stood up and shone last night. I'm starting to be a fan of Olds back three. Just need scrums and lineouts to improve.
As for Tahs, Douglas was my pick, followed by Foley & Mitchell. Liked #22 who came on as fullback in 2nd half, showed some speed and skill. Hit gaps well. Would start him instead of Izzy (who was owned by a Diggers). Tip my hat to the Tahs for their intent. Will need to be fitter and more accurate if they want to do well in the comp. It'll take them a while, but they'll be tough in the back end of the comp.

The combination of Quirk, Shatz and Gill was top notch. Together they did a mountain of work and were the foundation of the win I reckon.

Folau to wing also. He is big and powerful and spent all his night trying to get on the outside of his defender by sliding round. He needs to be on the end of the line and have a more direct line at his opponent.

That would be a waste, with forwards screwing up the back line moves and centres like Ashely-Cooper, Foloua would never see the ball at all.

You are picking on the wrong centre. You cannot play open Rugby with TC.He is a one dimensional, truck it up type.If that's what you want from your 12, then you pick him every week.If you are looking for more variety, you pick someone else.
Can someone please tell him, that when Foley is on the loop,he needs to show and go occasionally. ATM no defenders are even marking him,it is so obvious he is not going to run.This puts more pressure on Foley and his runners.

for my two cents worth I thought the game was actually quite promising for tahs supporters. Foley was top notch and Chapman made a huge difference when he came on also. Think hooper will come into his own after a couple of rounds getting used to the style. The handling was really poor but the intent was there and they really started to warm up in the second half. Great work from the reds backrow particulary Gill and Quirk allowed them to hang on and secure the win.

I wouldnt make to many changes just barnes in for Carter and Id switch Folau and Kingston.

Think a lot of people have jumped the gun on folau lets not sugar coat it , he was horrible at the back. Think he was really nervous but how does he bounce back?

I really liked what the Tahs were attempting to do

I liked that they were trying to make the ball do the work, there was a lot of straight running and support play

What I didn't like was their approach at the breakdown and lineout - just not enough competition.

I hate seeing sides standing off rucks and I hate seeing lineouts giving free catches.

Defense? meh, too many big hits with nothing to show for it. Where was the counter-ruck to leverage the domination in the tackle?

That's very unfair.
TC put in a shit kick straight off a turnover: that's a variation, at least in the sense that this time it did not cost the Tahs the game.

I thought the Reds just about threw it away in the second half. It was so humid though and both teams looked fucked. Thank the Rugby gods for Gill, Schatz and especially Quirk. Nothing better than seeing a big, fast, wild haired lunatic trample a back line and have the composure to still offload perfectly for the try.

TC actually was fine, he doesn't throw 15m passes, but he popped a couple of nice short passes to inside runners and was continually looking for support at the tackle when it was an option.

Reds were crap, and Waratahs even more so. Both sides are going to be smashed by the Kiwis and SA if that's the way they're going to play.

Reds at least can look forward to the return of Horwill, Genia, Samo and Ant. They should improve, but it looks forlorn for the Tahs.

Execution was pretty different from last year, for a start those god awful pop passes to static runner 1m from the ruck were gone, there was also some nice straight running to hold up defenders with passes to players in better positions.

Perfect, not nearly, but better, yeah, and I thought promising

Quade was ok, but his resistance to enter contact with ball in hand did put the Reds in a precarious position a few times. Sometimes he just needs to take the hit and go to ground.

Agree wholeheartedly. QC (Quade Cooper) at times put the Reds under immense pressure. Nowhere near his best game and needs to get his attacking mojo back.

Gill pointed Hooper, but my MOM is Quirk - by a mile.

Also agree. I hope Hooper doesn't come to regret going to the Tahs. Quirk was best on ground.

I said before the season that I wanted to see the Tahs shift the culture and style of their rugby more than I wanted to see them eke out shitty wins. Despite the sloppy handling and tackling, we saw a very different approach from the Tahs, particularly after oranges. Execution will come, I reckon.

There were some good signs in that second half for the Tahs where they completely dominated the Reds and had them back pedaling. Breakdown work was good at that stage and also some nice passes resulting in the man finding the hole. Volavola impressed me in the warmup match I saw and did so again in this match, certainly should be starting for mine.

Folau might have got first game nerves as he was in everything attacking wise in the trials. Defence is obviously an issue but that is a given for any convert.

Reds were steady, nothing too fancy in attack but did the hard yards and hang in there when it mattered most.

I though Timani paid the price for the poor early lineouts. Cheika thought he had to get Chapman on the field and it had to be Timani, Douglas or Palu.

And that is one good reason Timani is overrated.

Big difference in the teams IMO was in the loose three - Reds Shatz, Gill and Quirk much quicker and more athletic than our three. Hooper struggled with a lack of support at the breakdown and Dennis just doesn't impose himself on the game - something that a good leader must do. Palu is always good in fits and starts but can't do it consistently for 80mins. Losing Timani early didn't help the cause. Don't know if we have too many other options in 6, 7 & 8 but we've got to compete on the ground better and speed getting there is a prerequisite.
