Reds v Hurricanes

Dismal Pillock

Michael Lynagh (62)
Entertaining running rugby

Ruben Love with some horrific matador defense for that Brial try

The usual mentally deranged lineout throwing from Bakabaka Tuputupu

I get ruck penalties being much more grey and harder to enforce/enforcement being more variable. But the amount of basic knock-ons that have been let go this year resulting in enormous momentum swings is just dumb and terribly counterproductive. Its awful to watch - even if you are a neutral its fucking annoying.

And then you juxtapose that with the NRL where they are on knock-ons 100%. Shows how far behind Union is atm IMO. Get the basics right consistently if you want to be taken seriously.
Hmm league has some weird interpretation like the “loose carry” rule. In league there seems to be no wiggle room for the ball being able to go backwards. For me it’s just so frustrating the way refs police the ruck. They’re obsessed with penalising players for laying in the ruck but let constant in the side and off your feet instances go.
Also that looked very offside on Harry Wilson. They are usually very on offside inside the 22.

Kiss said in the post match interview they felt it was better to play Bloomfield as he had trained with the team for 6 weeks as opposed to King who had only had 1 week. Very weird they wouldn’t take that into account on Wednesday considering both were on debut. Not a fan
Yeah Bloomfield is a year older and playing regularly in hospital cup. King needs a fair bit of work seeing how he went in the U20s comp.

Ah annoying ref calls but you can’t win a game with a scrum like that and missing every third tackle. Reds had no answer to the Canes power game and were saved by the Canes poor decision making or hands.

I genuinely thought that was a bloody top game. Ok I'm a Canes man , so happy with result, but that was pretty good to watch. Must be I don't stay up until 11.30 too often (I actually thought clocks stopped after 9.30 pm ;) )
I think it was decided by moments where both teams will look back and know they turned off for a couple of minutes. The Reds just before halftime especially when Roigard scored his try, just looked to not quite be there, And Canes just after halftime looked to be still thinking what they talked about and not actually do it.
Was some great battles (which you don't often see in these hard games) Roigard?McDermott was a good un, as was Kirifi/McReight.

Top game !

I thought it was a good game too.

Looking at the stats, it was very even!

Couple of things stand out.

The Canes has 96% of possession over the last 10 minutes. Just ruthless at closing the game out.

Penalties - Reds 11 v Canes 5. Very tough to overcome that, and took away the Reds #1 weapon, the penalty maul. Interesting that this was the game that Lynagh started kicking for goal

Missed tackles from the Red's inside backs - Lynagh (5) and Paisano (6).

Wilson straight back to it. 12 carries and 18 tackles

I've been reluctant to get onboard with Wilson but that was very impressive after 5 weeks off. His effort, workrate and connection with McReight clearly outweigh quibbles about his footwork.

Great to see Harry back on the field and playing the full 80. Fraser was energetic as usual and Tate and Jock were excellent. And loved Brial’s physicality.

Lynagh struggled and he didn’t do his Wallabies chances any good. Needs to take the line on more and he missed quite a few tackles. And Paisami was too direct at times and guilty of some unforced errors and had overlaps at times but failed to let the ball go.

I didn’t catch the first half but interesting that we took the points a couple of times. Hindsight is 20/20 but I honestly prefer our original methodology where we back our maul and throw big punches rather than the little jabs.
