I reckon Pocock can look that way because he's often the tackler and so is fine to get to his feet on 'the wrong side'.

Ah, but the key thing is to be the tackler, you actually have to go to ground. If you are on the wrong side of the ruck and you have not gone to ground in the act of tackling someone, you should be pinged. There was one ruck where Pocock was helping the Reds clean out! :lmao: He wasn't dealt with harshly enough.

That said, he's a lot like McCaw - you wonder sometimes how the fuck he can get back to his feet that fast after being on the deck. Its like gravity doesn't apply to him.

You sure? If you ran to me, I put you to the deck, say over my right leg (so that I'm behind you and the ball) you're saying I'm not the tackler cos I haven't gone to ground and I have to come through the gate? I'm not sure that's the case.

Agree with the rest though.

No, he is actually right. To be considered the tackler in the eyes of the law, the defender must go to ground (at least a knee). If he doesn't he must retire and enter through the gate.

We need more laws like these....

From my understanding and the explanation I heard, the key idea behind the law is that only the main tackler does not need enter through the gate. That is, there can be only one guy per tackle who does not need to go through the gate. The main tackler is the one who goes to ground.

That is correct
however the tackler cannot do nuffin till he gets to his feet - he may then play the ball so long as a ruck/maul hasn't formed.
Don't forget there is no O/S at the tackle any more as was the case last year

From the book (IRB Laws 2007 - but its been the same for years):

Law 15 Tackle: Ball carrier Brought to the Ground

DEFINITION
A tackle occurs when the ball carrier is held by one or more opponents and is brought to ground.

A ball carrier who is not held is not a tackled player and a tackle has not taken place.

Opposition players who hold the ball carrier and bring that player to ground, and who also go to ground, are known as tacklers.

Opposition players who hold the ball carrier and do not go to ground are not tacklers.

The important bit:

15.3 BROUGHT TO THE GROUND DEFINED
(a) If the ball carrier has one knee or both knees on the ground, that player has been ?brought to ground?.
(b) If the ball carrier is sitting on the ground, or on top of another player on the ground the ball carrier has been ?brought to ground?.

Note they don't specify exactly what the definition is for the tackler, because it is assumed that the above is an example - therefore any tackler meeting 15.3(a) or (b) is also on the ground. So anyone who says the Laws don't say the tackler has to have one knee on the ground to be 'brought to ground' are full of shit.
