Mooney reshuffles the pack for Highlanders match

Scott Higginbotham back in starting side
Wednesday, 8 April 2009
QR Reds coach Phil Mooney has reshuffled his forward pack and replaced both wingers for Saturday afternoon's Investec Super 14 match against the Highlanders in Invercargill.

There are eight changes to the squad beaten 39-7 by the Western Force in Perth, including promoting dynamic backrower Scott Higginbotham and former Highlanders No 8 Ezra Taylor from the bench to the starting side.

In the other forward pack changes, former Wallaby Greg Holmes returns from a neck/shoulder injury to replace an unlucky Ben Daley at loosehead prop and Wallaby Hugh McMeniman moves back to lock to make room for Higginbotham.

Lock Van Humphries was left out of the tour squad to rest a corked thigh and sore shoulder. Lock Adam Byrnes comes into the 22 on the bench, while Leroy Houston moves back to the reserves to give Taylor a run in the No 8 jersey.

In the backs, Wallaby wing Peter Hynes returns as expected after knee surgery to replace youngster Blair Connor, while fellow rookie Rod Davies makes way for Brando Va'aulu, who is fit again after being absent since the Cheetahs game on March 1 with groin and hamstring injuries.

Rangy Australian Sevens representative wing Luke Morahan has been promoted out of the QAS Reds Academy for this match and included in the squad on the bench, at the expense of inside centre Anthony Fainga'a.

Hooker Sean Hardman has been named in the starting side after an improvement in his knee injury.

Mooney said the return of Hynes and Va'aulu brought much needed international experience to the backline, while the forward changes would provide more physicality and speed to the breakdown, plus additional lineout options.

"Ezra Taylor has done well in the spells he's been given off the bench so far this year, so he now gets his first run in the No 8 jersey against his former team-mates. He'll definitely be up for this one," Mooney said.

"Benny Daley has done everything we could have asked of him in his three starting appearances at loosehead prop, but with Greg Holmes now fit again, we've opted for his experience against what will be a formidable Highlanders front row."

Mooney said Morahan had performed well for the Australian Sevens and the selectors wanted to introduce him to the Super 14 environment.

"Luke is an extremely talented footballer who brings size, speed and athleticism to his game. If he gets some game time against the Highlanders we'll be keen to see how he's developed as a player as a result of his Sevens experience."

The team is:

1 Greg Holmes (Sunnybank)
2 Sean Hardman (Brothers)
3 Laurie Weeks (University)
4 Hugh McMeniman (Wests)
5 James Horwill (c) (University)
6 Scott Higginbotham (Wests)
7 Daniel Braid (Sunshine Coast)
8 Ezra Taylor (University)
9 Ben Lucas (Sunnybank)
10 Quade Cooper (Souths)
11 Brando Va'aulu (University)
12 Berrick Barnes (Wests)
13 Digby Ioane (Sunnybank)
14 Peter Hynes (GPS)
15 Mark McLinden (Sunnybank)

16 Saia Fainga'a (Souths)
17 Jack Kennedy (Souths)
18 Adam Byrnes (University)
19 Leroy Houston (Norths)
20 Brendan McKibbin (Brothers)
21 Charlie Fetoai (Sunnybank)
22 Luke Morahan (University)

The Reds will leave Brisbane on Thursday morning for Christchurch, before boarding a late afternoon connecting flight to Invercargill.

Some good changes there, and interesting to see both Connor and Davies overlooked for the bench. Nice to see Morahan getting a run. Told you he was a Queenslander.

Hopefully Holmes has made a full recovery, and will add grunt around the park. Tough that Van is out injured, but its another chance for Byrnes to step up. Maybe Houston can add some grunt in the last 20 of the game; he's got talent but too often wont apply it.

I'd love to see Hardman play out the 80. Horwill needs to have a big game too, to show he is over that foot injury.

very interesting re Morahan. Tough environment to debut in, but a nice eye opener for Connor and Davies (and Toua???).

Not sold on Taylor by any means. Shall watch him closely.

Noddy - agreed re Taylor, and I would have been tempted to start Higgy at 8 and Byrnes in the second row, with Taylor and Houston on the bench. On the other hand, we have not seen much of him yet, and perhaps Mooney figures if he can't fire up for a big game against his old team, then he needs to have a serious think about things.

I dont know whats wrong with Houston - well actually I do, its called defence, especially lateral defence: "Turinui syndrome". Apart from that though, sometimes he turns up to run hard, and sometimes not. And how the hell do you keep a belly like that and stay out of the front row?

and I know Davies and Connor were poor, but Va'aulu was pretty crap himself the last game he played (v Cheetahs?)

This is must win for so many reasons & making the finals isn't one, 19 game losing streak on the road, the 2 embarrasing thrashings in a row & a lot of blokes owe Phil Mooney big time.

From the web-only Brisbane Times:

When most people think of the Deep South, they conjure up visions of banjos, cotton fields, good ol' boys sipping rye whiskey and steaming bowls of shrimp gumbo.

Ezra Taylor thinks freezing rains, thundering scrums and a remote province where men are men and taking a backward step on the rugby field is an indictable offence.

The trip from the windswept hills of Otago to the tropical climes of Ballymore hasn't been plain sailing for Taylor, a strapping, inked-up backrower who defected from the Highlanders to seek fresh pastures with the Queensland Reds.

A series of injuries has kept his involvement limited thus far but after two hidings at the hands of the Chiefs (50-26) and the Western Force (39-7), Reds coach Phil Mooney rung the changes, giving the 26-year-old a golden opportunity in the process.

His desire to succeed is going to be tested in every way against the Highlanders in Invercargill, an isolated outpost where the Reds have never won and is so close to the bottom of the planet it almost qualifies for an Antarctic postcode.

Brisbane-born Taylor played eight games for the Highlanders before shifting north and knows exactly what to expect from his former side, which is coming in fresh off off a bye and motivated by impressive wins over the Cheetahs and the Bulls.

"They'll definitely be trying to beat us up. They're from the deep south and the ethos and culture of deep southern men is to be a hard man and not let any of your team-mates take a backward step," Taylor said.

"They'll be trying to outmuscle us physically and push us off the ball."

The expectation of a torrid battle at the breakdown is one of the reasons Reds coach Phil Mooney has promoted the hardened number eight at the expense of Leroy Houston, who moves to the bench after a string of patchy showings at the back of the scrum.

He is hoping Taylor, one of eight changes for Saturday night's contest, will add some lustiness to the tight five in the face of a pack lead by a mammoth front row and fearless in the surrounds of Rugby Park.

"The Highlanders have got a very big front row and the boys in our front row are going to have to work hard. Greg Holmes is back and he's well established and has a lot of experience. There's always a way around a big man. They'll find a way," Taylor said.

"Hopefully I can bring a bit more aggression to the breakdown at ruck time. I look for the chance to make a big tackle now and then. It definitely spurs along a team. One guy makes a big tackle and the rest of the guys want to get in there with him."

Taylor might just be the spark the Reds need after they were flat and uninspired against the Force, made to look sluggish at the breakdown and generally outworked across the park.

He wants to help the Reds regain the in-your-face approach that served them well earlier in the season but evaporated after a surging home win against the Sharks and the ensuing week off.

"We started out the season trying to have that physical presence and be bully boys. I think we lost a bit of that mindset after the bye but I hope we can get it together. Through a couple of big hits and just getting out there with that mindset, we'll come up trumps," Taylor said.

Taylor's workmanlike attitude means he feels grateful to be given first shot at the Reds number eight shirt, even if he feels like he hasn't done enough work to really call it his own.

"I don't know if I fully deserve to be there at the moment. I believe you have to really, really, really earn your spot," Taylor said.

"Me starting this weekend and playing as best I can and doing well for the team, I feel I would have really earned it. I've still got a lot to prove."

Houston will be feeling a similar sentiment. Demoted to the bench, the skillful ballrunner has the ability to crack a game open but lacks the consistency and hardened Super rugby physique Mooney is demanding.

It's easy to see how the former Waratah would have Mooney tearing out his hair. The backrower's talent is evident but silly mistakes and questionable fitness are obvious chinks in his armour.

"Leroy is a wonderfully talented player. The challenge for him is he has to be more consistent. We've spoken about that. He brings great skill to us but he has to bring that more consistently," Mooney said.

"Leroy has to continue to work hard physically. That gives him the ability to play longer and maintain concentration."

Mooney has recalled Wallabies prop Holmes (neck-shoulder) from injury and raw-boned flanker Scott Higginbotham mainly to muscle up against the tough, no-frills Highlanders.

He also dumped young wingers Blair Connor and Rod Davies from his squad altogether, recalling injured duo Peter Hynes and Brando Va'aulu and putting teenage sevens star Luke Morahan on the bench. Backrower Van Humphries misses out with a cork

Exactly - seems to be getting fatter & slower as the season goes on. How is that possible??

He may well be, but a shame about Weeks, Braid, Taylor, Cooper, Ioane, McLinden, Fainga'a, Byrnes & Houston pulling on the red jumper.

Even Yorkshire CC relaxed the "born-in-only" rule, and that was some time ago. Look how they've gone the last 40 years.

I'd be ditching the Fingers myself. Braid is an import, and I'd rather Braid than Beau Robinson. Houston I'd swap for Mowen in a minute. Taylor is Brisbane born. Byrnes used to punch New South Welshman at Tahs training, so he can't be all bad. Ioane was a Victorian who learned all his rugby up here, and played Qld Schools. Same with Cooper - you cant help where you were born, but you can come to Qld and become a Queenslander at any time (although as RW says, you will always be a bit pitied for the shame of being born outsied Qld).

That leaves Weeks and McLinden. Well, the Tahs didn't want Weeks, just like the Reds never wanted Hewat. So he saw the light. McLinden - well, he's out equal opportunity hire, I suppose.

Lets hope Sean Hardman has decided to save his WWF manoeuvres for the Reds training ground. Both Highlanders props have at least 20 kilos on Taumalolo!

I thought he was pretty good when he came on in the last game. At least he is fit.

Some pretty good lineout targets in that starting pack.

I think our scrum will get smashed though. Wasn't impressed by Holmes against the Tahs.

Bloody hell I wish we never lost Moore.

Ben Lucas scratched from Queensland Reds side with lingering rib injury

By Jim Morton
April 09, 2009

Queensland have been hit hard by the late withdrawal of halfback Ben Lucas from their Super 14 match against the Highlanders in Invercargill.

Lucas did not travel to New Zealand with the Reds on Thursday due to a lingering rib cartilage injury sustained last month.

Reds coach Phil Mooney on Wednesday named Lucas to start in Saturday's match but the heavily restricted halfback was unable to train that night.

With the injury not improving after being replaced with sore ribs in the big losses to the Chiefs and Western Force, Mooney said Lucas may need a lengthy sideline stint to recover.

His absence is compounded by the suspension of fellow No.9 Will Genia who was in fine form before being banned for three matches for a dangerous tackle against the Sharks last month.

Brendan McKibbin has been promoted to start his first Super 14 match while Australian Under 20 halfback and sevens player Richard Kingi is poised to make his Queensland debut off the bench.

"Brendan's service has been good, he's an excellent goalkicker and he's done the job over the last two weeks off the bench," said Mooney, who also praised Lucas's courage.

"He's been playing under duress, it's just the fact the injury's not getting better.

"He's gone above and beyond the call in playing with that."

Genia is due back for the Reds next match against the Lions at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday week and is likely to slot straight back into the starting role.

Lucas out. Gutsy effort by him to be frank. He shouldn't have played the last couple of games.

Oh well, some good young talent to watch.

Yeah, you could see he wasn't right and was playing through a lot of pain for the team. Hope he heals quickly though.

im a massive fan of this kid, i do think he is debut'ing about 12months to early, but he seems more then up to the task. His is probably the classiest finisher coming through QLD at the moment, he knows how to position himself to receive the ball and he has the speed and physique to beat players.

He is the second top try scorer in the IRB 7's for 2009, not a bad feat for a 18yr old.

Good for Kingi but interesting that he is another converted 10.

That was totally bizzare from McLindon, who has been getting worse and worse after a good first couple of weeks.

Va'alu continues to fuck pretty much everything he does up, how come he wasn't subbed earlier?

Was Ezra Taylor even playing?
