Reds v Brumbies Rd 9 Sat 12th April @ Suncorp 7.35pm AEST

The Brumbies physically bullied the Reds as the game went on.

Ffs Ryan Lonergan counter rucked Canham off the ball at one stage and Uru had his flattest game at the same time as McReight. Asiata, Brial had a dig as did Bryant when he got on but others didn’t show up.

Don’t think the outs would have changed the result with how flat they seemed to be.

Looked like a side needing the Bye. They’re in a good spot for the run home which isn’t the hardest. Blues and Hurricanes at home then Drua away, Brums away and Tahs away. I’ll back them to go 3/5. 4/5 could get them a top 2 spot still.
I did think the Canham counter ruck was largely down to Tate being in his road (if I’m recalling the same ruck). Tate was upright and in front of Canham and basically blocked him having a clean run at the clean out.
I think the biggest disruption for the reds was Faessler going off. Disrupted their lineout significantly and took some of the calmness out of the pack. Hopefully not a long term injury!!

Fun game to watch as a neutral. Reds failed to convert their dominance and Brumbies took their chances (and their 3 points!).

even before Paisami’s lovely try he had some great touches. I’ve been disappointed in his season so far so it’s a timely resurgence from him. Hope it continues.

Wilson’s absence was obvious. Uru and McReight missed him. Lolesio played like a man with a point to prove. Felt like a top of the table match.

Yeap completely agree. That first round bye has meant it's been a long first half for the Reds who have lost more players in injuries than what have come back.

The Brumbies structure and decision making won it for them. Between the penalties and poor ball handling by the Reds it just gifted the Brumbies prime position to maul it or have the unstoppable Bobby from 2 metres out running it in.

The Reds were all too happy to give Brumbies the opportunity to score either by poor decision making ie not clearing it and gifting penalties in their danger zone or poor attempts at high balls which didn't really pay off.

I'm still stumped at how Noah escaped a YC for that tackle. It was high and had force. Sure it didn't hit the head but I thought anything above the tits was high and as Tate hit the ground hard it was worthy of it.

At the ground I didn't see how Noah out played Tom so happy to hear where he did. Offensively I thought Tom contributed more to getting the Reds backs in threatening positions and he didn't shirk from defensive duties with Bobby V running at him.

Considering the Brumbies tries came from in tight, I'm not following how Noah had the better game?

I still don't get why Gus pulled Khalni up on that knock on as Gus was in the way and contributed to the knock on?

Very disappointing game from the reds, that was the worst we've played at home in years.

Disappointing crowd numbers in the end too. Rain, school holidays and the 3rd game at suncorp in 3 nights seem to have combined to really hurt the turnout.

Between the 10s I’d call a draw. Neither really owned it or shined but the conditions seemed to clamp Lynagh and those offloads needed to be put away.

Brums piggies discipline to the plan got them over the line.

On Kalani, imo it’s on him to have more awareness before taking off. He ran into the back of Brial before he hit Gardner anyway which forced his call. I know up tempo had been the go for the Reds but if he’d chosen to boot it and kicked it into a player because he didn’t look up we’d call it a shit kick.

Well Noah controlled the game better put the ball in the right places and didn't knock a kick over the sideline to give away a lineout. He cleared the ball better.

Neither 10 really stood out imo. Thought they were pretty even. Both Noah and Lynagh missed tackles and conversions. Noah kicked a nice 50/22. A lot of shovelling from Noah. Would really like to see him take on the line, straighten the attack and run a bit more. At times he was very lateral.

The Brumbies did well considering they lost Ikitau early. But the Reds really missed Wilson and Faessler.

Not just rain. It was torrential around Suncorp for most of the arvo. Can’t win that battle

That was never more than a penalty. The contact is clearly to the sholder and it slides up to the neck. It looked dramatic but it wasn't foulplay that warranted a card.

At the ground I didn't see how Noah out played Tom so happy to hear where he did. Offensively I thought Tom contributed more to getting the Reds backs in threatening positions and he didn't shirk from defensive duties with Bobby V running at him.

You see Noah organising the line a lot in this game (watch his comms, his gestures). He setup and disributed well. Made the right decisions at the right times for the game plan they had. His kick for Muirhead at around the 25min mark for example was the right option exectured well, that would have resulted in a try a couple of phases later if Frost doesn't bobble it over the line. The Brumbies weren't just playing off 9 but shifted the point a number of times to stretch the Reds defence, which Noah helped facilitate. His high contestible kicks were good, like his one ~36min mark which results in the Brumbies getting the ball back. He then at around the 37-38min mark gets the ball after a Reds knock on, see the space and kicks a good 50-22. Off this territory a couple of phases later the Brumbies score and go ahead on the scoreboard.... I could go on, but hopefully you get the point.

There were lots of moments where Lygnah in comparison made some poor decisions and some poor passes. For example, at around the 14min mark he tosses one right into the ground which results in a lineout for the Brumbies. He then follows it up at the ~15min mark after they win the ball back with his next pass being a distrubution that hits his target high resulting in the the player reaching above their head. There were lots of moments like this. I don't actually recall Lygnah even touching the ball in the lead up to any of those tries in the first half for the Reds. He didn't for the Paisami try which Tate pass towards the wing, he had nothing to do with the Asiata try.

I'm not saying Lygnah had a mare of a game, but Noah had a clearly better performance in executing his role, directly contributing to territory gains which turned into points, not making mistakes.

I still don't get why Gus pulled Khalni up on that knock on as Gus was in the way and contributed to the knock on?
Because the referee has no obligation to move. He's standing exactly where he blew the whistle for the mark. Khalni actually runs into the side of Red's 20 whos starting to stand up/disengage from the scrum first and then knocks it into Gus. Absolute muppet.

For a team in apparently great form and with the Wallabies coaching heir you sure aren't doing that much better than the other Aussie teams...

Apparently Schoupp has snapped his Achilles.
That sucks. Hopefully he can be good for round 1 next year.

Real uptick in Achilles injuries across sports. Use to be an old man who hasn’t realised he’s old injury. Can only think guys are getting so strong and conditioned they’re riding the edge a lot more.
