It's worth noting that as much as Mafi and Salakaia-Loto are a loss to the squad, the aren't that much of a loss on the 23's we were fielding this year - Salakaia-Loto was 281 minutes over 6 games and Mafi was 111 minutes over 2 games.

Stewart and Scott-Young are obviously bigger losses to what we've been fielding, but with the vast majority of the replacements coming through the pathways and from within the system we should at least be well placed to hit the ground running.
Wasnt Mafi injured and Thorn was anti LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto)?

Think both should have been and would continue to be starters.

Speaking of 23, I was looking at the fixture list and realised we only play the Rebels and 'Tahs once, but the other 'Aussie' teams twice.

Is this just to fit in all the rugby before the RWC or is this how the '24 competition will look as well?

Both were injured for significant periods, but the reason they weren't in the side doesn't really matter if we're talking year on year changes - a player who barely played moving on doesn't have that significant an impact on how we'll perform next year compared to how we performed this year.

It's how this year's looked as well - we play everyone once and 3 teams twice, which teams they are will change every year.

The difference may come when a world club championship gets up - it sounds like they'll have to shorten the season the years it runs, so you can expect that at very least those 3 extra games will be dropped.

What do you fellas think of the draw with playing a couple of games in Townsville? I like the games going there etc, but was interested to hear mate over there who has been a member for 20 year worth it which is a shame.s, has mentioned he not rejoining this year, as I think he felt a bit of a disconnect last year or 2, and said with a couple of games in Townsville he won't bother this season. I feel QRU caught between a rock and a hard place with things like that, they doing it right in spreading the rugby, but I suppose will have others saying well it's not really

You people are insane, you want to take a game to people that get only a couple a year, potentially new fans and want it to be a shitfest?

Well, if they go anywhere north it needs to be after May.
Think they play Canes up there in second game, I was talking to mate and had thought about going for a holiday and catch Canes game at end of Feb, but it's in Townsville! So perhaps maybe give it a miss.
And time I went there was a Reds/ highlanders game, went up for an overnighter, was probablyone of longest weeks of my life ;) :D
Was not a place I felt I needed to revisit!

The games have been crackers up in Townsville.. go rewatch the highlights & listen to the passion in that stadium.

suncorp stadium sits about 20% full most Saturday nights… Are the Dolphins playing in Redcliffe or Suncorp? Because that would be even less availability of options for the reds when the broncos have the monopoly on Friday nights.

Anyways the real travesty for me is QLD Country in the NRC didn’t play & train in enough regional areas like Townsville - Bond University is not regional… anyways I digress.

Yeah, Townsville has been good for the Reds in both game day results and community engagement. Why wouldn’t you keep going back there?

Reds to regions has been a strength under Thorn, probably his biggest initiative regarding fans.

Take games there if it means we win and grow a fan base. This is coming from a NQ boy who mostly only played league before landing in Brisbane. I’m still in Brisbane and my sons have all gone to rugby playing schools, but there is so much potential in the regions. Rugby League shits all over Union with pathways and pro contract opportunities domestically. Rugby needs an audience!

Thriving rugby community in Townsville and FNQ. There is more the Reds can do up there other than the super rugby game with coaching clinic, PR and school visit so it is a positive. Community engagement is critical.

10-15 years ago - Queensland rugby trialed a qld club comp championship type tournament that happened during qpr preseason.

the Brisbane club rugbys would either fly to regional towns or the regional clubs would fly to Brisbane.

there was some cricket scores type domination between the premier club and the country club but I generally felt it was a great initiative by the QRU… unfortunately it only lasted for 1 season so unsure about the impact this would have on qld rugby in general if it was given time and funding.
