Reds 2023

Definitely get Van Nek, I was disappointed the Rebels didn't use him.
I was surprised he didn't feature in the challenger series, I thought it meant he must have been re-signed by the Rebels or snapped up by the Brumbies (apparently they were talking to him), but both have announced their squads without a sign of him.

Coincidentally heard Kirwan Sanday has been doing some training and might look to play QPR in 2023, although not at Easts.

He’s 32 next year, if the Reds just need a short term signing and someone ready to chuck the boots on and play, he could come into the mix.

He was in the extended squad for the Brumbies last i heard. Trial and Train

I guess he'd do in a pinch, but given we may not have Tupou after 2023 anyway I'd prefer they looked at someone who could be a longer term option.

Pretty devastating that Tupou likely won't get what smart money suggests will be his final season at the Reds.

Can anyone confirm if the achilles injury is the same leg that he's had the calf issues with for some time?

Weird spot for Taniela to be grabbing if it was his achilles. Some orthopods have said it could be a gastrocnemius tear which would line up with his calf issues this year.

Where at? Brothers?

This could really
Where at? Brothers?

Brothers, GPS, Wests and Bond have all been in constant chatter with him about lacing up again. Didn’t say why Easts were out of favour. GPS have dangled a pre-season tour and clinics in Fiji which could be the deciding factor, that’s if he actually decides to play again, a long time between now and Feb.

Apparently he’s not the only retired/semi-retired front rower being sent the SOS in QPR. Now that all the club pre pre season meetings are done and sessions have started, a lack of front rowers (although not uncommon at this time of year) has been flagged as a big issue. I know Shute Shield clubs had problems last year.

Will be a telling time for the Reds.

Great to see them both get contracts, particularly Anderson who has been excellent this year.

Interesting to note that it hasn't been accompanied by a full squad announcement, can only assume there are more signings to come.

If you look at the first page and the squad, with these 2 signings that’s up to 36 without knowing if Aubrey and Tauakipulu are signed. I’d say we’ll get the announcement soon. We will however require another prop or 2 even with the signing of Sula-Siaosi with Tupou and Hoopert being out for the season.

Yeah, I'm not sure squad sizes are strictly enforced at the moment (or to what number), but even if they are the Tupou and Hoopert injuries will give us leeway for another prop at least.

Does Super Rugby offer squad reprieve for long term injuries? I imagine Taniela will be out the whole Super Rugby season so we should be able to sign a replacement.

I believe they have in the past, but given it's the sort of thing that is generally a component of the salary cap its probably irrelevant (in the sense that it wouldn't be necessary), my understanding is that the cap is not enforced at all at the moment.

After impressing during this year’s inaugural Queensland Rugby Challenger Series and tour of Japan, Queensland Rugby pathway products Connor Anderson and Phransis Sula-Siaosi will join the Queensland Reds squad in 2023.

Anderson for 2 years and PSS for 1
Apparently Connor Anderson was told he was not good enough to play for Norths prem grade

That's interesting. Is it something formal or just a nod and a wink?
