the one thing the Reds do (mostly) in recruiting is make sure the player has some connection to Qld.

Taniela had a brother that lives in Brisbane
JOC (James O'Connor), Paisami were from Qld junior pathways
Lynagh has family links

All the rest have links via schools or born and bred (I think)

The ones I don't know are Daugunu and Vunavalu other than they liked the place compared to where they were.

Paisami is not a QLD pathway. He did a lot of his growing up in both Samoa and NZ. Then moved to Victoria where he finished school. Nothing to do with QLD till he was cut from the Rebels for getting into a brawl

I guess technically correct, but they were both QLD products and played a couple seasons at GPS before picking up contracts at various professional clubs. They were then recruited to the Reds after existing stints at other franchises.
Fair point - 2017 signing of George Smith could be the last established player without a prior QLD connection then?

I don't understand why we would have a problem with recruitment wanting a Q connection in their targets.

I don’t have a problem with it, and would say it’s been a large factor in helping cultural change under Thorn. On the flip side, if it’s one of the criterion prospective recruits are judged on (not saying it is), then it wouldn’t be casting a broad enough net to catch talent.

Just an interesting insight into the Reds’ pathways if we have to look back to 2017 and beyond for a big name, non-QLD signing.

I don't know about that.

If you want to judge when we last recruited a big name, judge it on when we last recruited a big name. AND then, if the organisation is able to add, that big name is connected to Q, well that is an added benefit, isn't it?

It seems to me our problem isn't really recruiting big names. And it's not really developing big names either. Now retention, that is another thing.

neither do I

Fiji Drua have their criteria
Moana Pasifika have their criteria
and so on.
Each business sets its own parameters that it will call it's "Values".

wasnt there a Kiwi flanker a few years back?
I think he mostly played 8, but are you thinking of Leroy Houston? Re-signed in 2016, last played in 2017, but I'm going to say he had a prior QLD connection as he first signed for the Reds in 2008. I had a quick trawl through the squad lists over the past few years and I'm pretty confident in my George Smith guess.

Did their senior schooling at TGS also.

a lack of NRC has really muddied the waters on who appears to be maturing towards a Reds contract.

Cordingley has been in his role for quite some time now. cant help thinking a new face in that role might not hurt.

Radike Samu was probably the best non-QLD recruit we ever nabbed. although Beau Robinson was a handy get as well.
