Reds 2023

If Paisami is out and Henry still injured, I think I'd prefer either O'Connor or possibly Creighton (to keep O'Connor at 10) at 12. I rate Flook but I'm not sure he's spent anytime at 12 before and I'd worry it'd disrupt the backline too much against a side that's going to thrive off of broken play.

The other possibility is Annan slots in at 12 - he's been playing there a fair bit the last couple of years, including for the development side this weekend. I'm not sure how much he's trained there with the main side given he didn't get time there in the trials, but it's clearly something they flagged a while ago with him spending much of the u19s there. If we go that route than O'Connor probably has to start at 10, but that was probably going to be the case anyway. We could still then have Lynagh on the bench, but I'd probably be more comfortable with Creighton there.

I'd rather Campbell on a wing than Petaia. Petaia is in the form of his life at Fullback currently, surely you have to keep rewarding that.

Yes but in terms of team balance, I don't think Campbell offers much on the wing when we have more explosive scorers/specialist wingers. I'd rather him at fullback or the bench option for fullback and only come onto the wing if needed due an injury in the game.

It's a hard one, I think Petaia at fullback is doing wonders for his game-involvement confidence, and that's always been one of the biggest issues holding him back.

I think Petaia is the more talented option at fullback

but I trust Campbell to put in a more stable 80 mins performance.

which fullback do you want on at the 60th minute mark when reds are tiring & the livewire drua play that unstructured football around that time of game.

Campbell seems like the better option at fullback at 60th minute mark.

For me, Petaia will offer a better package at FB for test rugby if he gets more time playing at Super Rugby level. Bigger body, bigger boot, bigger attacking threat, bigger defensive strength, taller for high ball and test experience. There are a number of defensive work ons. Australia doesn’t have a big bodied FB and he’s our chance to develop one. Aiming for a better version of Freddie Steward should be the goal.

If JOC (James O'Connor) has to start at 12 with Lynagh at 10 then we probably don't need another playmaker in Jock, so he can come off the bench.

But if it was Paisami at 12 then I'd start Jock at fullback with Petaia a 2nd fullback on the wing.

ehh, I disagree.

The only thing that Vunivalu and Daugunu offer over Campbell is weight (and height in the case of Vunivalu), and Jock has demonstrated season after season that he can carry, catch, pass and finish as good as anyone and better than his colleagues a lot of the time. I don't know why we sacrifice an entire position on the field for someone who might score a miracle try in the corner, but offers less overall.

Vunivalu and Campbell for me on the wings.

I am unsure whether I've seen him score a try whilst on the wing for the Reds?

Which is kind of my point (and that of others) he isn't really on the field for his ability to score tries, he's a safe set of hands, good defensive general from the back and can slice and dice when running in open play. His core skill set is wasted out wide.

We have blokes who are far better at actually beating defenders close to the line/provide aerial threats and can just be chucked on the wing.

Anyway wait and see what they do.

Petaia's best performance also coincided with the Reds largest points tally ever. Everyone looked great that game.

I thought he was a significant step down against the brumbies. the pressure was greater and so was the error count.

Jock isnt flashy but you just dont get the error count from him. Jock at 15, Petaia on a wing for me (or 13 if required).

Last year Jock top scored with 8 tries equally second highest Reds tries in a season posted by Eto Nabuli, Dom Shipperley and Ben Tune. (Latho holds record of 10 in a season).

Brendan Moon scored 16 in 1978, but I assume you meant in the professional age.

Tate scored 9 in 2020 though
