Reds 2023

A player that has excelled outside of the Reds program over recent years - hopefully it is the case for Nella, but if not I am sure his bank account will whisper sweet nothings into his ear to keep him happy.

The discussion was about established players who went elsewhere and improved. Perese was far from established when he left and was further from it when he eventually popped up at the tahs.

I was adding my own comments around a former Red that is doing well atm, can appreciate the confusion - on a side note I should be getting 20 Gold Stars for calling Tommy Turbo as starting 10, relax Willy its Friday lol.

There was no mention of NRL. Eddie has talked about Swinton and Gamble in a number of interviews. It has been my observation that others have missed. That’s all.

if it makes you feel more secure, he talked about Josh Flook and Floyd Aubrey on his latest podast.

I also recall an article a couple of weeks ago when he talked of McReight, Wilson and Tate.

Izaia Perese is one that comes to mind for me
Perese also had a couple of stumbles after leaving the Reds as well.

I also have concerns about whether his body is cut out for professional rugby as he can't seem to string together long patches of games

Good to know. It was my observation and that’s why I asked. It was not intended to be sinister.

I relate to rugby junkie criticism of NSW bias but I’m going to hold my tongue in this instance and wait til Eddie names a preliminary squad.

Cheika was notorious for NSW biasism & I’ve made the claim Dave Rennie Gold Coast based coach was out there trying to appease the decision makers in Sydney so he could live in QLD. (Covid restrictions obviously played a part & NSW infrastructure was being built)

anyways I’m going to trust Eddie judgement. If someone like 2022 Jed Holloway/Ned Hanigan keeps out a talent like 2022 Seru Uru then of course I’ll have raised eye brows

anyways 2023 season kicks off in 10 minutes. It’s a blank canvas for all these players to go out and impress Eddie on the field. Good luck to the Australian franchises & players staking their wallabies claims.

Did you just say Uru should have been selected over Holloway last year. Hahahaha. Wait Hahahaha.... Ok, even if not selected initial, he had the chance for Oz A and got out played by others in who went on the end of year tour.

I guess I am in the Reds thread...SMH

Is Hernan or Thorn responsible for our ruck defence/lack thereof?

Tell you what, I'm a bit over hearing the players even say it's a problem of discipline. Similar to Rennie reign, everyone seems to know it's a problem, but nothing is ever done to fix it.

I suspect that there is more happening than just discipline. Fitness comes to mind. The counter to that despondency is where we are in the tight 5 which will impact pretty much everything.

It's just round 1, but surely the "Thorn is cooked" theme is building?

Yeah - under pressure for sure.

Yesterday sadly confirmed two things for me - our fitness is still below where it needs to be and the bottom 25% of our squad still has some way to go to be super rugby level. Unfortunately McDermott also made a number of key mistakes and that compounded things.

Most of the squad was competitive for 50-60 minutes. Even when the Hurricanes first got their nose in front we didn’t fold straight away. But even from 30 minutes or so it looked like the Canes had a gear we didn’t and eventually the flood gates opened.

Nonetheless I hope we don’t go into our shell. We aren’t going to become more competitive by playing more conservative rugby and trying to contain teams like the Canes, Blues, Crusaders and Chiefs. The rules changes to speed up the games are only going to make this tougher.

I’m concerned how much the conditions will take out if the legs of the Reds for next week. We need to be able to bounce back and we need to continue to be uptempo.

On the flip side the season is 1 game old. The team had a point to prove before a ball was kicked and now they have an even bigger mountain to climb. I look forward to their response.

One thing of note for me - I thought Zonggorr was very good around the field and I thought his mistakes at scrum seemed more technical than just being overpowered. Which is going to happen to a young prop. He’s not going to be strong at this level unless he gets better in the scrum but I thought there were some promising parts in his performance.
