Reds 2021

Only way that Vunivalu doesn't turn up at Ballymore next year is if RA and Vunivalu come to a mutual agreement where they RA agree to pay out part of his contract and release him back to the NRL.

In which case RA would simply be subsiding his wage to the tune of a few hundred $thousands just so he could play in the NRL.... which would go down like a lead balloon right now for RA. I think we need to accept that RA have signed Vunivalu and he is coming to the Reds in 2021, regardless of it been a worthwhile investment or not.

What position?

Where do we play him?
I’d like to see Petaia move to fullback giving Vunivalu a wing position.

Too many machinations to consider at present.

But Petaia could be world class at 13,14,11 and probably 15.

I am sure he would be pretty handy at 12 as well.

So I am sure we can make it work.

10. Gordon
11. Vunivalu
12. JOC (James O'Connor)
13. Paisami
14. Filipo
15. Petaia

22. Stewart
23. Campbell

I have always been a fan of Stewart and can’t work out if his attack game or his combination with JOC (James O'Connor) is the problem in the last few games. JOC (James O'Connor)’s skills are more suited to centre. Campbell’s doing well but we need more at fullback. I’d like to see a bit of Gordon this year. Heard he’s been going well at training. With this caliber of backs there is no room for Hegarty based on his performance this year.

CFS? Thought he had been very good for the reds the last few games, shame for the injury last night.

Think you might be very close here.

Gordon is such a classic 10.

Beautiful that he’s been allowed to develop in the background, how did he go in prems yesterday? Or is he not allowed to play?

I'm completely confident with Jock at 15, completely. If we shift him, whoever comes in sure as hell needs to be demonstrably better.

Just had a look at Wests team list and he wasn’t named. It was mentioned than all Super Rugby players were not allowed to play club.

I believe Malolua is off contract and can’t be re-signed due to not being Wallaby eligible. Although maybe that rule will change if we need to ensure we have 5 competitive sides. If not Sorovi needs to step up or he will he passed over. Who else is in the production line. Didn’t we bring a young half into the squad with big wraps on him?

Leaving that aside if we have a core group of Gordon (never seen him play, but happy to trust the good word on here), JOC (James O'Connor), Stewart, Paisami, Petaia, CFS, Daugunu, Vunivalu, Campbell, Hegarty (who I think is still on contract) and Flook then I’d say I’m pretty happy with where we are at, our options and our level of depth.

I like him best at 13. Move Hunter to where? Trying to maximise the best team with the players we have.

I hear you and it is great to have these challenges, but I think it would be a travesty to lose Jock out of the 15 to make way for Paisami at 13. He's definitely not as good at 13 as Jock is at 15 in my mind, and we have a better 13 too.

Jock was solid under the high ball, plenty of energy kick chasing and made distance running it back. Stepped in at second receiver a coupe of times, happy in traffic and at the ruck and I thought his defense solid. He is a project I think we should stick with.

At least we don’t need to go looking for backs.

A couple of things -
- Petaia is best at 13. I’d be happy to see him at 11 for the rest of this season because he is a very good winger too, especially if CFS is injured, but he is potentially the long term Wallaby 13. I’d rather we don’t stuff him around. Hunter has been great this season, but Petaia is the better of the two
- Gordon has played zero super rugby so far. We are finally building some experience. Let’s use that to bring him through progressively
- Injuries will have a bearing on all these selection decisions
- COVID 19 may yet as well. I don’t know how that is all going to play out, but I wouldn’t count out some releases due to financial pressure as yet
