Petaia has always been the victim of overhype since he started playing regularly against men. For his 10% X factor he has 60-70% poor ball handling/security, poor kicks, poor decision making and increasing lack of confidence; with the remaining 20-30% being just average. In the last game he looked lost/disinterested in the backplay. IMHO he does not warrant a place in Super Rugby in front of the guys who are performing consistently better and deserve their shot. I would send him back to QPR to develop his skills and confidence.
I agree Petaia is a victim of public hype, because I think people have an unreasonable expectation of what he should be doing and judge him based on their own expectations of the hype around him.
He is clearly down on a bit of confidence and form, but he is still in the top 4 for defenders beaten in the competition and still attracts the extra defence whenever he touches the ball, which enables the players around him to find space. This is the kids first year without any significant injury, coming off a pretty emotionally taxing 2020 for him. I think that needs to be considered.
Ball handling is an issue at the moment, too many forced passes and loose carries, if it weren’t for that I would have no issues with Petaias development trajectory.
