Liquor Box, I believe there are clauses in contracts for exactly this kind of situation. I don't know how much leverage that allows, but it has been reported in the media that they are there.

I hear what you are saying about protecting your earnings, but this is not the way to go. Without everyone being in on the cuts, they don't work. If they don't work, RA presumably goes into administration and everyone loses out. I can't imagine contract negotiations going well in the current climate. If RA goes under, it would get flooded.

Yeh, I’m finding a few people I know on fixed term contracts have extreme circumstances stand down clauses, where technically the business doesn’t have to pay them a cent and equally the employee doesn’t have to work. Obviously no idea if players contracts are similar but I’d think there would be some provision to do something.

@Derpus. Agree Coleman was off his peak but I take a view on him over the last 3 to 4 years ( at his still young age ) and not just the last 1 .

I'm with Slim and Derpus on Coleman. Was in excellent form a couple of years ago, but not rated against the likes of Rodda and Arnold in 18 and 19.

I'd also add that Harry Hockings, while very much a promising player, is being over-hyped atm imo. To pick just one aspect of his game is the same as saying Rob Simmons was always one of the best all round locks because he was very good at lineout time. The rest of his game was very soft and never really at a level to put fear into any opposition. HH is behind Blyth at the Reds and Swain at the Brumbies for all round skills.

I thought Coleman's slump was off the back of injury. Didn't think he was in bad form by the time of the 2019 tests- just that Arnold and Rodda were both in brilliant form.

Jim Tucker puts forward a possible explanation of the three’s stance in today’s CM.

Basically states maybe the players ( player’s agent ) don’t believe that RA will be in any position even by next year to pay their contracts in full. So get out early and jump the que for a Japanese contract . Remembering of course that Kerevi ended up at Suntory.

Rodda has apparently let RA know that he would take the sabbatical on offer to complement his income.

Lucas and Hockings are not capped national players and thus dodge the limit of two OS test players per team on the field at the same time that exists within the Japanese competition .

Rodda will probably just take his sabbatical now, but also seems he doesn't want to be a Red? Tahs and Rebels would be desperate to get him and seems he (joining a long line) has a problem with Thorn - probably missing out on captaincy related.

Hockings and Lucas may think they can leave now and come back pre WC - bit of a gamble though if either of them have hopes of being a wallaby and having that earning power at home one day. Surely would also boost future earning capacity.

They planning on swimming to Japan then? What a gamble. Not only are they completely unsure a Japanese team would take them on, they are also completely unsure when they will even be able to get to Japan.

I have read elsewhere that the rules around foreign players are set to tighten soon in Japan, though. So that part stands up at least.

A falling out with Thorn is pretty wild speculation, unless you know something we don't? We have to remember this bloke is only 23, that captaincy wasn't his right by any means, although at the time I did think he was most suited to it. It seems to me this is closer to a bunch of young guys being led down the garden path by a manager. I still think its pretty weak of them, but I never took them as blokes who didn't like playing for the Reds.

I'd take Angus Bell and Will Harrison for starters.

Its fairly usual for players, previously acclaimed, to all of a sudden not be that good when they announce their departure. I won't fall into that pit. The Reds are stronger with these three in the squad. Rodda is probably the closest we have to a World XV player at the moment, and as a tight 5 player that's vital.

Hockings is a freak. Gees he's no Darcy Swain sure, but he is brilliant. Has been poorish this season as he came back from injury but he is a potentially brilliant player.

Lucas is another that has struggled to play his best this year, but that's not uncommon for boom rookies. Having seen him come through premier grade as a school leaver and stand out in just about every position in the backline, then win the tournament for the Brisbane Under 19s, then be such a dangerous focus for the Aussie 20s, then show brilliant touches for the Reds. The guy has huge potential and is the type of player we want to make a long term Red.

But each have tarnished their reputation with this decision. Sure they are being driven by their tunnel visioned manager. Sure they MAY come out of it better off financially. But to stand yourself aside from your team mates and then just general society and claim "I'm better than you all" is just a horrible look.

They'll struggle to win back much support from the fans at very least I'd expect

Isaac Lucas is taking a massive gamble though because he is easily replaceable. I know he has a lot of talent and versatility but there’s guys coming thru every year as utility backs who are bigger, faster and stronger

As for the other 2 guys in Rodda and Hockings. Well you can’t teach height. As long as they keep up their skill sets they’ll get jobs elsewhere in the world. Just not a lot of faith in this current climate but we are about to see how good of a agent Piconne is and how long they are off without a contract
