I've heard serious noises about Paia'aua moving to Canberra, and we all know how many ridiculous out clauses there are in these contracts.

You will note that during that time I asked the question on innumerable occasion's "whay has the competition winning strong defence of the Tahs gone to shite? The answer was plainly obvious that is was down to the structures being used in 2016 & 2017 with players shuffling all over the field doing who knows what. That then transferred to the Wallabies with the same results. It is only this year that the Tahs with Gibson as defence coach returning everyone to their positions and there after the Wallabies also following suit (under Grey) that the defences was righted. It shouldn't have taken two years to see the problem and Grey lost a lot of the mana he gained in 2014 with me at least.

Further, McGahan coached the Rebels to win the wooden spoon overall TWICE and that includes the Australian Conference. It seems that technically this year he missed out on the wooden spoon for the Aussie conference although strictly speaking, Sunwolves aren't Australian, sooooo is this the third wooden spoon for the Aussie conference system for McGahan? Regardless of the outcome of tonights match I think

I don't understand at all what you are raising. Grey had been in the position as assistant defence coach since 2013. While Gibson inherited him and the flawed roster of players (no second row) and the defensive system went to shit with the new structure from 2016 onwards. Gibson changed to the HC role while Grey maintained the same position. What few years chance did Grey deserve to get?

As this is the Reds thread, to bring it back on subject this relates to Thorn in that under normal circumstances he would enjoy that untouchable period of grace, what has impacted on this is the intransigence regarding Cooper with no explanation regarding this. I would hate to think it is purely personal, and that leaves only some undisclosed indiscretion which in the leaky world of Rugby that means we would have heard rumours and something would've come out. The dead wood in the Qld set up of McGann, Cordingly and Carozza also draw a parallel with the time it took for Gibson to clean out the Cheika influence on the Tahs. It is debatable if Thorn has that much time, not because the QRU want him gone, but because support will totally collapse if too many games are played like last week, and this season has been littered with them.

The powers that be(if there are any left) at the Reds or at Rugby Australia should be encouraging Thorn to give Cooper a run. Ditto for Slipper when he is available.

As much as I want to see Cooper playing for the Reds again, throwing a guy in who I'm assuming has had very minimal exposure to whatever structures Thorn has the team running - the same guy was was supposedly dumped for his lack of discipline on the field/propensity to deviate from the gameplan.. sounds like a pretty awful idea to me and just a way to confirm Thorn's prior bias.

As for the cash advance, we know how tight the organisation is. This isn’t a surprise. They’ve had a shit draw with, what was it 6 weeks between home games earlier in the year? And then the June break with away games on the end. Footy clubs rely on games for cash flow. To pay salaries etc. they’re not asking for a loan just what’s due to them. It’s obviously not an ideal situation but we knew they were skint (all Aussie clubs are) but appreciate the cash flow challenges.

As for coaching the kids as mentioned above. A shout out to Brad Free who does this. He started a half back academy free of charge for any rep player or A player and gives them position specific training. Skills stuff. He’s expanded it and linked with the vintage reds and now has the likes of Fletcher Dyson doing front row training, Toutai Kefu doing back rows, Garrick Morgan locks, Ian King sprint work, Brenton Fielke doing wing work. Etc etc.

Two things, the QRU advance is for monies owed in the future not what is owed to them now, which means they bought some time but will need increase in revenue from ticket sales sponsors next season to make up the difference. With the current administration and team performances, this could be difficult.
Brad Free program is awesome, wonderful contribution by guys helping and the best initiative in Rugby in Australia. Brad Free volunteer of the year award please and then a job offer by the QRU or Aru. His program is what development of junior players should be all about. Don’t fund blokes like Kafer with Mission statements and meetings. Fund Brad’s program roll it out across the country and film sessions and start compiling a junior training program for all coaches, parents and kids to reference. Club coaches at junior level only get an hour a week to train kids and most of it is re team core skills. Specialist skills to kids with determination and passion to improve is vital.

It would not take long to bring him up to speed. They need someone who can direct them around the paddock. Behind that pack with a lot of running options out wide Cooper could be devastating.
He did not have a drug issue or anything else recently and there is no one anywhere near his level as a 5/8 in the setup. Thorn may not like him, or his playing style, but he is exactly what that side needs. Jono Lance is off at the end of this season as well.
It’s too late this year of course but he should be given an opportunity in the NRC and then be considered for next year.

Yeah, I think it should happen via NRC into next year if at all. I just don’t see shoe-horning him into the last loss of the season after months exiled from the squad as a productive action - tons of potential downside with little upside. Even if Cooper lights up the Sunwolves it’ll be long-forgotten by the time casual sports fans are exposed to Suoer Rugby again.

The Rebels did not need Quade to win by 30, they just needed to hold onto passes. This season is done. Hopefully the boys who have been putting in every week and are leaving at the end of next week get a fitting send off.

I was frustrated by the backs lack of sting last night as well, the one nice play they put together Jono got over.

To be fair, they're piggy backing off Stiles' hard work over the preceding 3-4 years as Forwards coach, Co-Coach and then Head coach. We've had the strongest scrum in Australia for a few years now

The scrum has only become a major weapon this year. Most of the forwards boys came thru with Thorny from the 20's. The front row is brand new. Smith boys, Taniela(1yr), Brandon, ASY (Angus Scott-Young), Smith, Wright, Hockings. are Reds newbies.
Gone : Slipper. Sef &Talakai, Kiwi,(ones who I could credit Styles to have worked with).
Credit is therefore, to be fair, Thorny entrusting physio man Crapper with the 'dark areas" of scrummaging.
