Yes he has some interesting takes on player recruitment in that audio interview - seems to be a good thinker on the make up of a team.

Morgan might just be sick of having to share commentary with that Knob from Eurosport Robbie Nock

I don't know where the Robbie hate comes from. In my experience with him he is a good bloke, and I personally think he does a pretty good job, especially when Morgs and/or David are in the booth with him.

i do not know him personally, but his "commentary" style and knowledge of the game is, well lets say, if not unique then idiosyncratic.
it really grates on me, i have to turn the volume off and watch in silence.

Different thread I guess (sorry Reg, Hugh, Cyclo et al) but I like Robbie Knock. He's got an 'old world' style about him. Sounds like he's commentating in the bleachers (in amongst the crowd) whilst running his op on the smell of an oily rag, not from the luxury of a salubrious press box.

Underdog, English speaking pressman (obvious disadvantage from the start en France) doing his best in the circumstances. Good interaction with guest specialist commentators too. I give him credit.

In my view, Turinui would probably be a good appointment as a back's (Attack and Defensive) coach, sub the Head Coach, although from memory he wasn't much of a tackler himself.

But he's a sharp dude whose been around and has great communication skills.

Whether the committee or sub-committee deems he has enough experience or not is another matter.

He seemed pretty good - took a team I was playing for a session as a guest coach once.

Steve Kefu is coaching backs/attack at Toyota in Japan and has to be one of the best coaches I have seen...

Just saying he intends to apply I'd say.

Never have an endless stream of highly dubious excuses worked so well in elongating a coaching career that has otherwise failed by every imaginable KPI and performance criterion.

RG vs Dingo in that department. Close call

Fair dinkum what does Adrian Thompson have to do before the Reds grab him as the new Head Coach? The bloke wins QPR premierships with a pretty ordinary roster, has coached the Australian 20s for the last couple of years, has coached overseas and was pipped to the NSW job by Gibson. Those on the inside at the Waratahs will tell you he very nearly got the gig ahead of Gibson! He is well liked by his players and knows how to get good results with ordinary cattle. Let's face it, our cattle for next year are looking pretty ordinary. So bloody frustrating when someone this good is right there and there is still talk of RG.

Heard a whisper that Sydney University are looking seriously at trying to lure him as their new Head Coach or Coaching Director to replace Chris Malone.

He is a Queenslander and would be an ideal candidate for the HC of the Reds, as I have posted previously. Perhaps it is politics or some other secret masonic reason why he is unpalatable to the Reds Board. Objectivity and rationality don't always seem to be attributes associated with Redland.

I have no idea what his record is - and as you say it could be that hes pissed off the wring person at the reds or maybe they just want someone with a record of coaching pro players

I don't see how he's an outstanding candidate. He's coached the Under 20s since 2013. In that time their World Championship results have been:

2013 - 7th
2014 - 5th
2015 - 5th

Considering around 50% of the players that form the squad generally contain super rugby experience, this isn't a great result at all.

But they are outstanding performances relative to current Qld standards aren't they?
You can only dream of running 5th these days......

Totally agree TWAS. And he's had some good talent at this disposal.

When I saw the Aus U20s play the Kiwi U20s on the GC this year I can honestly say that I said to myself and others then 'this does not look like a well-coached team at all, it oddly resembles the RG-coached Reds'. I may have even posted that conclusion in the U20s thread.

In 2013 and 2014 I thought we were well coached and I praised Thompson for doing a good job with the talent at this disposal. This year was a big step backwards I thought.

"Intriguingly, the head coach will be answerable to a high performance manager, so it remains to be seen exactly how the power structure will evolve."

The QRU will not appoint RG as HC, they have him slated for the HPM!!!

Watched a bit of the under 20 Italy your, think your a little generous in the 50% figure. Think maybe 6 out of that squad of 28 approx had any super rugby experience and one being Magnay was who probably shouldn't have been on tour let alone super rugby playing. Anyway I think Thompson would be worth a look. Under 20s would be a tough challenge trying to bring everyone together with really a short preparation and also never having big enough forwards to ever be a threat to the tournament .

The Queensland Reds Gala Ball for 2015!

crappypub_zpss2vadkvh.jpg

"First of all, I'd like to thank the Wollongong Working Men's Club here in sunny Sydney for very kindly agreeing to host this years Queensland Reds Gala Ball. Some might say a venue closer to Queensland itself might have been more suitable but frankly, I had some issues booking any sort of venue at all in and around the greater Queensland/Western Australia/Darwin/Perth/Tasmania area.

Well then. What a great year it was! Yes, we had a few ups and downs but frankly I feel vindicated as the head coach when I see all the Reds players that we managed to get into the Wallabies squad this year. Personally, I think 2016 is shaping up as a very exciting year. We have a world class inside halves pairing of Will Genia and Quade Cooper. They will greatly complement the pace and power of James O'Conner out wide. And in the forwards we have the very exciting prospect Liam Gill and the ever-reliable James Horwill. What an engine room! I beg your pardon? No, I will not 'sit down and shut up.' Besides, for some reason this Gala Ballroom appears to be entirely bereft of chairs. It must be in readiness for the Gala Ball Dancing to come later, once the other guests arrive.

"Anyway, where was I? Oh, yes, 2016. Oops, thats my cellphone, just a second, it's my mother I have to take this. 'Yes. Yes, mum. I understand. OK. Umm, mum? Is that John's voice I hear in the background? Mr Connolly, is that you? Oh. OK. Just the wind. OK mum. Bye.' Sorry about that, everyone. Turns out my mum can't come tonight. She says she's busy having her pipes cleaned AAAAH, JESUS, my face, why did you throw that at me, aghhh, I'm bleeding, that was a full pint glass you maniac, quick someone call an ambu
