Wayne Smith is reporting that the new QRU CEO position has come down to two, Richard Barker and Max Walters

Mr Doug

I assume that's Max Walters for former Ch 7 head Honcho? Not sure who Richard Baker is?

Interesting comment from a Reds expert like you Reg, as I thought you had 'contacts in the Boardroom'.
One candidate has a Rugby background, one has a cricket background, and both very successful corporate blokes. Either would be better than the recently-departed CEO.
You should start listening to Radio 4TAB, as I only know what I know having heard a discussion on that station yesterday morning.

I read a lot of comments about Jim Carmichael since he left and they are very negative (much like Mr Doug's above) to the point of being quite scathing in some cases. I find this odd because I thought the guy did a sterling job with his time at the helm. From where we were to where we are now, there is no comparison.

I don't know if I'm alone in my assessment of him, but what do you guys think is the main reason for the negativity?
1. The recent poor performance of the Reds?
2. Stuff going on at grass roots? (I read quite a few that suggested he was responsible for screwing over the small clubs but I don't know anything about that issue).
3. Something else?

If he had left 4 years ago everyone on this board would still be singing his praises. Much like Link since his departure. At that time Carmichael and McCall were lauded everywhere. Remember there was even a push to get McCall into the top job at the ARU? Wow.

I attribute a lot of the negativity to the on field success, or lack of. It was apparent McCall supported RG which earned him the ire of many and lead to his demise. Carmichael's support seemed a lot less clear cut. Either way he certainly did many good things while in the job.

I think overall speaking Carmichael's time at the Reds was extremely positive. What I believe the outcry revolves around is the apparent regression into the Reds being run by the 'old boys' once again. When he first came onto the scene it was refreshing to have an outsider's take on what a shitfest the QRU as an organisation had become and through time he moulded it to be successfully run.

The tide started to turn when they appointed RG which they tried to sell as Link guiding him. Many of the fans were perplexed by this decision but gave the board + RG the benefit of the doubt. When it became apparent a few years ago that RG couldn't deliver the results the board and CEO from the outside failed to take actioned and gave him a lifeline for reasons none of us could fathom.

So, it started once again looking like the QRU was being run by the 'old boys' who are/were once again untouchable and unaccountable for how the business was performing.

I'm not so sure, out of the 2 reported CEO candidates Walters has no rugby background and whilst Barker has affiliations with club rugby his 'old boys' affiliations are limited.

Both have one thing in common and that's a strong media background.

I am strongly critical of the participation levy & individual player insurance which has had a pretty significant negative impact on participation at a local level and also on club finances. As I understand it, Carmichael was the architect. I was told that second hand - so maybe it is wrong, but i did hear it from multiple sources.

However, there is no doubt that he achieved plenty of success as well in his time at the helm and bought the Reds back from the brink. He deserves credit for that.

Of course, a lot of that success has unwound in the last 18 months, so if he gets credit for the good, he needs to also take responsibility for bad.

That's a fair enough assessment. But where I come from, you'd usually go a little docile on the "less than good" in order to provide an appropriate send off for some extrordinary stuff he did for us.

OTOH I think about the send off that Quade got.

Commentators mentioned that Ben Matijow may have played his last game for the Reds, apparently he is only an injury replacement for Kane Douglas so when Kane returns after the June break then Ben is out of contract?

That really is disappointing. Hope he gets snaffled up. I think that Aussie second row prospects are on fire this year. Matwijou is part of that, I dont want to lose him from the Reds but I REALly dont want to see him lost to Aussie rugby.

Yeah and to be fair Neville had a blinder of a game tonight, and Douglas will walk back into the starting side when he is fit again, so Matijow is probably better suited to be picked up by one of the other Australian franchises. He has shown he is Super Rugby quality so I hope one of the other Aussie teams pick him up.
