Higgenbotham as well, though the back row stocks coming through look good, particularly with Timani firing.

With a lot of big guns leaving the other Aussie teams at the end of this year, you can see the Rebels being very competitive next year if they can keep this side together.

That's a bit condescending of you, baa-baa.

As far as I can tell, we are competitive now.

No doubt. It's just semantics- now you are competitive, meaning you can challenge any side in the comp. Next year you will be very competitive, meaning you should beat most sides in the comp.

Enjoyed this match... Rebels looking very fit must have worked hard in the off season, impressive I'm a fan...
Waratahs look like they did just the opposite in the off season... So much flabby talent out there last night...

Phipps is having a shocker. Quite a few passes to no-one and now a scrum mistake that cost them a try.

Timani has been a pleasant surprise at lock so far this season.

And that try saving effort from Hooper was crazy.

Yeah - Burgo completely overshadowed Phipps.

If the Hooper incident is the one I'm thinking of, he should have been penalised, maybe even binned, for not releasing and then lying all over the ball carrier. Led to a turnover instead iirc.

Yea technically I agree but I think in a instance like that, personally, I would take into account intent. Was painfully clear he had no idea of the rule and had all the time in the world to ground it, as opposed to a player say coming in and swatting the ball away from a attacking players just before he gets his hand to it similar to a high tackle with intent is seen as worse than a unintentional one

Again technically it's right but I think they could have handled it differently

Ignorance of the laws is no defense. And the example of swatting the ball away before an attacker gets his hand on the ball would result in a penalty try. Right and proper decision.

I reckon that offence is a YC if the player is under pressure, and it prevents a scoring opportunity. As Taqele was all on his own, and could have easily grounded the ball, I don't think it was the right call. Penalty, not a card.

Funnily enough Folau did exactly the same thing in his first game for the waratahs, a trial match against the Rebels in Tasmania two years ago. Even though it was a trial match he was carded. The strange thing is, why didn't the coaching staff learn and teach taquele. An outside back should know what to do near the try line.

That's the right call in the 10 c's.
This is pro rugby,no dispensations for dumb pricks who haven't bothered to learn the rules.
IMO...

Its a yellow card no-brainer. And for all those Gardiner haters it was not a penalty try. Right call was made on both accounts.

Easy call to say RL converters who do it are "dumb pricks" but its a cheap shot. To my knowledge its been done by Izzy. KHunt and now Taqele. The reasons that it happens is that at Super rugby level the game is so fast that players are working on instinct and training. If you train that way for 5-10 years that's what you do in the heat of battle. It takes time, and often a severe case of embarrassment, to get the reflex action out of your system.

That was not a reflex action under pressure.
He had all the time in the world to take a number of options.
Look at the confusion on his face when Izzie tells him he just fucked up.
He clearly does not know the rule.

They probably assumed that considering Big T grew up playing Rugby that he'd have a good idea of what he was supposed to do. Hopefully it's lesson re learned.

Still getting over the disappointment of losing to NSW, never a good feeling. If you where to have offered 5 points after the first two games to any Rebel fan three weeks ago we would have taken it. We have just put in two solid performances against both of last years finalist.

Alot of positives to be taken into the Brumbies game next weekend, a good 8 day break will help.

Hope we can get some more phase ball together, only once we strung together more than 7+ phases.

On his interview on Rugby Central after the game he admits to having no idea he was meant to ground it.

Let's cut the bloke a bit of slack. I've been a senior manager in my chosen industry for a while now, and I still make the odd blue from time to time.

Besides, at least he did something. A bad decision is better than no decision at all.

so having watched live and now the replay, a couple of observations. perhaps i am being a bit picky, but last night was another "what if" game.

the Rebels have clearly improved but still have a few unresolved problems from last year.
the basic plan again seems play down the opposition end and pressure them into errors. hence the kicking ++++ in the first half. effective if your defence is well organised and the resulting breakdown leads to a turnover or an attacking lineout. last night the ref (less said the better, but i believe he is out of his depth at this level, irrespective we simply failed to adapt to his interpretation of the tackle/ruck/maul) favoured the side tacking the ball in, i do not recall, either one clean pilfer or a penalty to the defending side. additionally they fucked up three attacking lineouts.

the attack still looks pretty disjointed, to me, not much fluidity except for the forwards who seem to have learnt patience. a second playmaker may help, but i don't really think it is in TT's overall strategy. Jack D, understandably, still lacks a little composure. from the piggies lots of one outs, pick and go, etc.. many still from the standing start rather than running on to the ball. both fainga'a and leafa butchered triesby not passing. the tries in both games have largely come from the opposition under pressure, timani's last week and the super sefa one last night the exceptions. i hope to see more from the Rebels being creative rather than destructive

the defence whilst improved overall still let in 4 tries, two of which were really pretty soft (the first naiavoyro one and the beale try after 28 all). the defence also allowed a couple of easy line breaks, one (beale early second half) which ultimately lead to a try. you can't play field position and allow these easy returns.

happy to have footy in Melbourne again and at least we are not red

My two cents worth
- Rebels defensive pressure was causing lots of mistakes by the tahs
- Laurie Weeks had a great defensive game
- couple of the backs need to to tackle school
- Timani great agression , home he is not injury prone
- i thought the Rebs ran out of condition in the last 20 - 15 mins
- TPN with his new hair cut looks like a cross between Vincent Vega and James Brown
