Agree with all the praise for the scond rowers Pyle and Jones. They were sensational last night and could be headed for bigger things if they keep playing like that.

Bryce was floundering at the scrum. All he had to do was to get the Blues to stop pushing before the ball came in and he would have been halfway home.
You cannot have a fair contest when the platform is so unstable on the engagement.
He could see that the scrums were a shemozzle and did not know what to do about it so he was pulling penalties out his arse.
I often wonder why referees try and coach front rows how to scrum. It is the prop's job top do that and he would know more about it than the ref.
Bryce has failed another test and it is time for him to go.

I think the Blues pack would think the Rebels should have manned up and taken the hit. Blake couldn't take the hit and crumpled under Woodcocks pressure.

On the game, it was pretty horrible and during the first half I thought the Blues would win by 50, but they were clueless in attack relying on ability and no teamwork. The Rebels were simply too resilient

True, but Bryce has to manage what is in fron of him. And what he was looking at was a scrum that was not stationary or steady after the engagement and he failed to manage that.

Really enjoyed the last 30 minutes or so of the match last night, Rebels are my second favourite side by a country mile right now. Just a few notes on my take of the game.

  • Bryce can be very over pedantic at scrum time, but I thought tonight was justifable on some level. In the first half the resets were definatly having an effect on the game, but in fairness he did give Blake chances to get it right, but in the end when he started penalising straight away I thought it was good for the game, even though it was against Melbourne. First time this season I've personally seen a Loosehead vs Tighthead battle be so one-sided, Rodzilla straight up got monstered by Woodcock, and I think all Rebels fans will agree that if Weeks isn't fit for next week, there is going to be more worries at scrum time.
  • Aside from Blake, I thought Henderson, and more specifically Ged Robinson did an arseload of work around the field. Someone tell me why Robinson didn't start?
  • The second rowers were simply amazing, no more needs to be said, these two young boys are going to be freaks.
  • In the backrow Saffy + Lipman + Delve worked together like they did last season. They aren't a flashy lot, but they get involved heavily at ruck time, which allows for Jones and Pyle to be a little more loose in their ball running. Saffy must be one of Melbourne's fittest, he is either tackling or going for the steal at every second ruck. Big Delve is a true leader and I would like to see him keep the captaincy if Mortlock returns.
  • It's a hard one to judge how Phipps went, his forwards left him exposed at certain times, but he did manage to clear the ball quickly. I still think Kingi is a better option, but it was probably Phipps best game so far this season.
  • Cipriani and O'Connor work so well together. If Melbourne are to have a fairly strong season, both these players need to stay on the field. JOC (James O'Connor) showed his brilliance in attack, and you don't realise how much he gets stuck in defensively untill you follow him around the field.
  • Inman started very slowly imo, he fell off a few tackles on Ranger and just looked a bit out of sorts. But credit to him, in the second half his defensive efforts improved greatly.
  • Out wide I thought Mitchell did nothing good nor bad. Gerrard was solid again. But with Beale I think he is trying to do way too much on his own. That's not to say he's playing poorly, but that he needs to have some confidence in the players around him.
  • Things that need to be fixed : Scrum needs a massive improvement, BALL FUCKING SECURITY! I lost count of how many times passes were pushed or slight knock-ons were made in promising positions, I think some glue is in order.

In relation to the Blues, I have no idea what they can do to fix their season. They just looked completely out of sorts in every aspect of the game except from Woodcock at scrum time. Pat Lam doesn't have much time left, and currently I can't see him seeing out the season. Looks like the same demise to the Hurricanes of 2011.

To be fair he did manage what was in front of him, most of penalties seemed to be for Rodney not getting his bind up. Scrums are very seldom stationary or steady when ball goes in, no referee can stop the movement.

Blues scrum mullered them, and probably would have done so even if the hit was "stable" and Bryce was managing it better. Rodney Blake has really not come on at all in scrummaging. Woodcock schooled him. What the Blues did with all that good ball from scrum is another matter, they were awful.

I thought Gerrard was bloody good, did a lot in both attack and defence, and kicked well. I would not be totally surprised to see him get a Wobblies gig some time this year.

The huge positive was that the Rebels got both attack and defense together for all of 80, that's major progress and, whatever, the Blues put some top players on the park.

As much as I love Gerrard, and think he has been one of the Rebels best players this year, I doubt he will get a gig. We are talking Deans here....

I suspect a big boot, and good front on tackling won't be the 2 KPIs Robbie is after. He is a tad slow these days too. I like watching him play, though.

Crap. Apart from the last sentence, in general.

Scrum was unsteady as the Rebels were trying to use all tricks in the book to win penalties as they knew they were getting 100% completely schooled. It was imposible to control such a mismatch & the Rebels front row looked like a bunch of schoolgirls. They were pathetic in that facet of the game.

Rest of the game, meh. Blues are other peoples team now. I'm not going to bother watching a bunch of players with such a piss poor attitude to actually winning a rugby game - bunch of wannabe show ponies, unprepared to do the graft that it takes to win a game.

Lee earlier posted that Phipps had a blinder. Me, I thought he was very average in a backline that needs good quick service to use their spectacular talents. I did not think he was very good at all and the idea he might get anywhere near a Wallaby jersey this year fills me with dread. One underperforming Wallaby halfback is quite enough thank you, we need someone who is going to put pressure on the incumbent, not someone who will make him look good.

I think Kingi should be starting at 9 every week.
