Rebels 2021

RA owes you something because you can't wash your hands? Victoria has an outbreak WA doesn't want to let them in so it is RAs fault. Righto.
Less than a 10 people got sick lol. We kept the comp going last year away from home just as the Force did. What thanks do we get a round 1 bye into an away game. Members and fans have already bought tickets. It’s too late to move it. Unless there is a further outbreak it will be 26 days with no cases by the time we are due to play the Force.

This is the stupidity of it. Apparently no team is to be held responsible for its state government policies, but then Melbourne has to fly in same day, shift matches etc because other states wont let us in. Why not just play our first four games at home. Reds will have no restrictions on them and can fly in and out whenever due to the QLD border easing, no issues for Brums or Tahs, and Force can do a planned one month tour given their government are the one causing the biggest issue.

I was at a music fesitval with thousands of people on Sunday on the Mornington Peninsula. It was speculated by the performes that it was probably the largest festival occuring anywhere in the world right now. If the other states are shitting the bed worse than us on borders, punish them, not us.

Neither RA nor other clubs are responsible here. Yes any burden should be shared where this can be planned, but can it? Borders will continue to react to COVID. It's not like we have a schedule for the rest of the season as when and how borders will be impacted.

Wessles suggestion - that other states are responsible when they close in reaction to a Vic blitz lock-down - is risible. These things will continue to happen, everyone just continues to the schedule to the extent that they can.

Suggestion that WA is "the biggest issue" is well debatable given Vic's on-going actions. And no club can be responsible for what their govt does anyway.

It is not some anti Rebel conspiracy, just luck of the draw.

So apread the load now. The Australian is reporting we may have to go to Canberra next so we are allowed to travel to Perth, and i doubt there is smooke without fire on that. We already have to fly into QLD on game day. That is a month on the road. The Force could swap their home game with us, spend three weeks on the road in a planned fashion (the Rebels cars are still stuck in Canberra), of which two weeks were already scheduled anyway. Baden Stephenson's comments about a looming mental health or family breakdown crisis at the club are completely fair. Maybe it is time for the Rebels to refuse to travel on the terms of other states and do the right thing by its staff before they end up with a worksafe claim or investigation on their hands.

So spread the load now.

What is there to spread?

The only issue currently is with WA putting restrictions on Melbourne.

The Rebels are the only team that has to go to Perth before round 9 (Force's other two home games are round 9 and 10).

For this week, swap the Friday and Saturday fixtures so the Rebels can arrive the day before and prepare properly.

As for next week, well I don't have a easy answer to that one.

They are presumably arriving on the day of the game because of restrictions placed on them. If the game was moved to Saturday I imagine they'd be flyign in on Saturday (like last season).

The restriction for Victorians travelling to Queensland ends at mid night on Thursday, if the game is Sat they can arrive on Friday. If the game was Thursday it would need to be moved out of Queensland.

They asked to arrive Thursday, get tested and wait till results before leaving there hotel and were shut down.

Unfortunately Stoff The Rebels are not the only team living this covid thing. What about the Perth Wildcats, New Zealand Breakers, Sydney Sixer, Sydney Thunder, Perth Scorchers etc etc etc. Unfortunately its part of their job, hopefully the support systems are in place for them to cope.

I can't see anything regarding that. The Queensland COVID restrictions for Victoria still lists a whole lot of locations as hotspots requiring 14 days quarantine.

The suggestion from the Australian is the Rebels may need to go to Canberra instead of Melbourne after this weekend's game because they would be forced to quarantine on arrival in Perth. This is in the context of our restrictions in Melbourne likely going back to "Covid Normal" on Friday. The team also hasnt been able to come back to Melbourne to ensure they can enter Queensland for this week, and even then only on the day of the game. All other sides are on a normal schedule. That's the load.

I accept that there are significant issues placed on the Rebels right now. That's around Queensland and WA restrictions on Victoria though which is preventing the Rebels from returning to Melbourne currently.

From what I can see on Queensland's COVID website, the restrictions are still in place for 14 day quarantine for Victorians from certain locations and that isn't about to lift hence the reason they can't return to Melbourne before this weekend's game. I can't see anything that indicates why they can't fly up the day before the game given they haven't been in Victoria for > 14 days and why that would change on Saturday. Queensland's entry restrictions aren't tied to the local rules in Victoria.

Likewise, they're the only team scheduled to go to WA anytime soon.

The current situation means that no one can go to Victoria and then WA or Queensland which essentially makes it a problem for the Rebels only because they can't return home until those restrictions are lifted. I don't see how you can take that burden away from the Rebels by re-jigging the schedule.

They aren't particularly relevant to a discussion on the fairness of the re-scheduling of the Super Rugby draw, but i would point out that the NBL completed their last season apart from the grand final series, and BBL also completed the previous season before Covid, so they arent really comparable anyway.

Their job is to play professional rugby. It is not to hit the road with only a few hours notice seemingly for five days, and then be stuck on the road for a month, especially when they had a similar situation last year that lasted between 13 and 22 weeks depending on who you are. These people have families, many of whom are away from their family and support networks, who were completely isolated in a 110 day hard lockdown last year without their partners. Again the situations you quote aren't comparable.

The Rebels have been out of Melbourne for 14 days on Thursday, that's why they can fly up on Friday. They requested entering QLD on 13 days and wait for test results and were knocked back. They are looking at changing round 3 to accommodate the WA restrictions. They also have 30 cars in ACT because no flights or buses were available when they needed to leave Vic in a hurry. They have gone above and beyond to help this comp, asking for a little back should not be punished.

The Rebels left Melbourne on Feb 12 so that date plus 14 days takes them to midnight on Feb 26 before they can enter QLD.

On the draw, Melbourne is open for business. It is the other state governments causing the issue and those states should have to adjust their schedules. It isnt like there is an out of control second wave in Victoria like last time, there was an outbreak which was quickly controlled, just like has happened in NSW, QLD, WA and SA. If we were the ones with closed borders like earlier this year, same rules should apply to us.

OK, I agree that it would make sense to change the Brisbane game to Saturday if they can enter freely on Friday but not before.

I agree it's the other states causing issues but I don't think that really changes anything. It doesn't make it significantly better for the Rebels if the Reds/Force host them in NSW or the ACT as NSW and ACT still have restrictions on people arriving from Victoria so the Rebels wouldn't be able to go back to Melbourne currently anyway.

Hopefully this all gets resolved after another week and the Rebels can go back to Melbourne following their trip to Perth.

NSW and ACT are open to Victoria. That's why a game in Northern NSW would have been the fair option this week.

As for WA the Rebels should just not go. It is a WA problem, not Victorian one. Let them sort it out.

It should be pretty clear by now, QLD will only make quarantine exceptions for major celebrities.

WA seems to prefer the border kept closed, regardless.

So you dont call being on the road/ away from home for on average 9 weeks for some of those teams not comparable, and some missing New Years with their family and other celebrations as well not comparable?? Mate i was falling into a bit of sympathy for you guys but slowly im starting to come to the conclusion suck it up buttercups, because its what you get paid to do!
And before you say yeah theyve had to drop things suddenly and go well so did all those other teams that i've mentioned!
