Rebels 2021

Wayne Smith saying Philip has re-signed with the Rebels for 2022. He’s still off to Pau this season but will be straight back to the Rebels after that

That's bloody great news. I was worried it was a classic "off to France to develop (and get hooked on those sweet sweet euros)" situation where, like Paul Alo-Emile, they never come back.

Look mate, I can put up with your poor choice of friends and the horrible team you support but leaving the hyphen out of re-signed is too much! it's over we can no longer be friends.

Well it's all good, you can come to the Melbourne game this year, my frind and I will be away camping that week.

Looks like young lock Aston Vaiotu from the Tahs Academy is training with the rebels

Currently there is more than a handful of guys on short term train only contracts that will return to QLD and NSW once the squad fills out in the new year

Yeah rebels have always had a large contingent of train and trial players for the preseason
Which allows almost a second squad for the preseason trials . It’s a great opportunity for some of the young fellas coming through to get some game time at a higher level than they would otherwise would have got to experience.

Have mentioned it on the Reds thread , but would love to see an “A” team comp amongst the Super Rugby AU franchises. Get to see the development players actually play .

NRC?

If NRC goes ahead again next year great , if not an “A” Team comp running alongside the Super AU draw would provide great exposure.

Would maybe also find fans being a little more invested in their franchise’s second team than what they would have been with NRC .

Just a thought and aware it would come at a considerable cost both financially and in the form of a player drain away from SS and QPR.

Player movements up and down within a franchise based on form could also be an opportunity.

Problem is the overlap with club rugby, with the Reds the Super Rugby season overlaps a significant chunk of the QPR, by running a A Team comp you're removing another 22 top tier players from the QPR which has flow on effects for quality the competition.

I'm not convinced that there would be a net benefit by playing a A Team competition instead of letting them play club rugby. Depending when the club season kicks off, maybe they could run a mini A-Team tournament prior to club rugby, but once club rugby starts the players should instead play that.

I suspect also that RA are minded more to some form of interstate club comp than reviving NRC. I’m not sure it will achieve the same things that NRC did.

Maybe they could run that mini comp on super weekend as filler games, and give club rugby across the country a bye week..

We have Sordoni instead. By the sounds of it everything has been completed minus official announcement. Looks like it’s only for 1yr. With Fa’amasuili and Eloff that’ll make some great TH depth for the year.

We just need some tall timber. So far only RHP, Hosea and Cummins signed with Calas rumoured but unlike Sordoni I haven’t read much about it in the last week. Not sure if 4 locks is going to do the trick, we don’t even have an obvious back rower that could fill in with injury crisis. Kemeny of Naisarani would be asked at the current rate if 2 went down injured.

So Argentinian forwards rumoured to the Rebels:

HK - Santiago Socino
TH - Lucio Sordoni
LO - Ignacio Calas
All 3 would round out the pack

Rebels should have a solid team for next season

Squad prob short another centre or wing option.

Disappointed that if Socino gets a gig it will mean Declan Moore won’t be around, he looked like he has a gear or two left in him at SS level compared to the others. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him pop up somewhere else if he’s moved on or in a NZ squad. Having an international hooker in the squad tho will mean plenty of quality in the squad

It would be great if could sign all 3 Argentina players to bolster quality of super rugby sides generally and in this case rebels. Edit - I just checked and report from America’s rugby media is saying it has already happpend ie 3 signings

http://www.americasrugbynews.com/20...uper-rugby-in-australia-for-melbourne-rebels/

Hope it happens and indeed they can find a Argentina quality centre or wing who might still be available.
