From Wayne Smith, for what it is worth:

"But the VRU has legal advice that no such notification is necessary, given the ARU signed off on the put option in 2015. In other words, the VRU doesn’t believe it needs the ARU’s approval of the sale."

And RugbyWA also believed that the Force were secure in the competition until 2020...

Who knows what to believe, i'd love to know what the ARU's legal bill is up to.

Slightly different. Rugby WA have a clause that they will be in the competition as long as the current broadcast arrangement is in place. That is is the contract and the ARU do not disagree with this. If there is a put option in the contract and the Rebels/VRU have followed the right process, then the ARU have no leg to stand on.

The ARU's argument with Rugby WA is about whether it is a new broadcast arrangement. Given they sent a press release saying that the change was within the broadcast arrangement, I think they have been hammered in arbitration.

The Force and Rebels have clearly been talking (I am sure there were discussions around transferring players / staff etc if one of them was to go down) and, as Daz says, the timing is very interesting.

Ah, this old strawman returns. GMR, the mess started well before Pocock's deal, and as has been stated many times, he was paid for X number of years playing service over X + 1 calendar years. Give it a rest.

Yeah, I know that, but why start using logic now? That went out the window ages ago.

Well apparently the ARU had an emergency meeting last night about this so saying they have no leg to stand on(despite what the contract says) is a bit pre-mature. Let's wait and see.

Law is a fickle beast and is pretty open to interpretation. (see:the confidence of both RugbyWA & ARU in this arbitration case)

Remember all that 'grassroots' money cutting a team was supposed to give Australian rugby? ;)

How much do you want to bet that the emergency meeting was a bunch of rich white men looking at each other and saying "I didn't know that. Did you know that? What clause? Did you read the fucking contract before you signed it?"

Harold Mitchell gifted the Rebels license to the VRU in June 2013.. it didn't work then, why will it work now? Not being critical, but struggling to understand the logic of this decision.

Mitchell was not a rugby man, club was set up all wrong. The current set up is alot better than the early days, with vic government backing it has a chance to succeed.

Is the current set up ACTUALLY any better, there isn't any indication of stability financially and it's not like they have actually gotten closer to the finals.
