From a marketing perspective I can see some value, Samo had a cult-like following, especially with some of the younger fans. Wouldn't be expecting a whole lot from him on the field but maybe having his face on a few billboards might get the memberships ticking over.

On the Rebels FB page yesterday they had the Mike Harris interview with SEN where they mentioned the Rebels are on the way to breaking the membership record from last year. Said around 7500 members in 2014?

Well that would be good but i can't see why membership would be more advanced at this stage c/w last year when there was considerable hype about 2014 expectation, dampened by the reality of 2014 season.

This seems like another marketing led signing. He was pretty average (I dare say lazy) when he left the reds and it's not like we need another backrower.

If it means more memberships and bums on seats then so be it. Who knows, maybe a Japanese holiday has put some life back into those old legs.

Samo is at the Rebels in 2015.

Somewhat bizarre announcement. I'd have been trying to get Lopeti Timani some game time at number 8 rather than importing a geriatric by professional rugby standards.

Don't be so negative, Samo international experience can help develop young players like Timani and McMahon

Samo is a great marketing signing.

He is somewhere between 38 and 42 I reckon but he a fan magnet.

Has gotten pretty lazy over the past few years but can have a huge impact when he gets involved.

Great marketing signing? For who? Not the Rebels; no-one in Melbourne outside of rugby circles would know who he is. We get more marketing exposure from the new bus than new players.

Let's not talk about signing players for marketability in Melbourne. It didn't work for Cippers, JOC (James O'Connor) or Beale as far as I know.

However, as a mentor to our younger players, full marks.

Daz, he is a great Marketing signing, got a full article in the Hearld Sun who does not give a crap about Union today.

I think the Samo age issue will be cleared up when the Rebels send him to the Melbourne Uni Archaeology Dept for carbon dating tests. Hope he goes well in 2015 .... and glad its not a comeback , just a continuation of what has been a fine career .

I'd rather see Samo on the bench than Skelton. Not such a crazy proposition. Couldn't see him starting though.

Samo was on his last legs as the Reds in 2013 let alone making the Wallabies RWC squad in 2015..

Maybe the Japan stint gave him a bit of a rejuvenation, but it hasn't turned back the clock.. He might give the Rebels one good last season but any Wallaby talk is drawing a long bow.

Whilst I didn't like his selection due to his fitness, Skelton ultimately earned his Wallaby spot on the back of some impressive Super Rugby form,..

Just a shame that Super Rugby form didn't translate into consistent good performance for the national team... Anyway perhaps we shouldn't start up a big pro/anti Skelton debate.

We'll have to wait and see how Samo goes. I think he will be able to offer a bit to the Rebels as an impact player off the bench. And if that comes to pass why shouldn't he come into consideration? We don't put much stock into specialist bench players. We'll just have to wait and see how he goes when the season starts.
