I don't think the issue is talent spread.

The Rebels have a squad that could be competitive, but they're not. As an outsider I can't say why.

Whilst we have some glaring gaps in our squad (no good loose-heads or 12s in 2013) our squad holistically is okay, we just recruited too heavily in some positions and not heavily enough in others.

The rebels don't have the squad to be competitive. They have some very good players and some very poor ones.

Players like Davidson, Horie, Henderson, Roberts, Rokobaro and Sidey would not pick up a contract at any other Super Rugby team. Then add on to that players like Fuglistaller, King, Leafa, Mitchell, Thomson and Sitauti, who might not pick up a contract at any of the top teams.

Rebels just need more quality across the park before they can be properly competitive.

I guess i'm talking about talent spread accross the five franchises in general, not just for the Rebels. I think we've got a good spread of international-quality players in our team, I just see some glaring gaps in the spread when you consider the Force. the 'Tahs and QLD have a number of an IMO the Brumbies should have more. Why Ben Mowen hasn't been given the chance at international level astounds me.

If we continue to maintain our squad and plug some gaps (the areas you identified would be a good start) I think we will have a good mix of Wallaby class players and talent on the fringes of Wallaby selection. If you consolidate the Wallaby talent to two or three franchises, it's not going to be good for Australian Rugby.

If the Rebels could restrict their opposition to 25 points or less in every game then they would have won 7 games instead of the two they have currently won.

They would be 15 points better off on the table and currently sitting in the top 6.

That is both reassuring and damning at the same time. Impressive!

Who knows what points we'd have got if we'd managed to hold teams to 25 or less though?

I've watched most of the Rebels games this season and I really don't think they let in many points because of overly adventurous attack.

Most of the tries conceded tend to be from poor defence.

I certainly get what you're saying and it is certainly somewhat true that teams will concede less points if they take less risks in attack but with the Rebels I really think the two are as unrelated as they can possibly be.

Personally, some of the games I've watched the Rebels in they have turned high scoring because a team gets a couple quick tries and then the game opens up. I enjoy watching the Rebels games, but the style is different from games with teams like the Brumbies and Reds (not to mention the Stormers).

Looks a good team. Stirzaker deserves a start; he's been very patient behind Phipps. Interesting we've gone with a 5-2 split on the bench; guess Hill is expecting the battle to be fought in the forwards this week. Hope to hell we don't get any back line injuries otherwise we might need to use our props out on the wing (that's where we like it anyway). Thought Jones would have got a start and given Pyle a rest. I see him Jones coming on early in the 2nd half and tearing it up with Elizbeth.

5-2 split is because we are running out of backs in the squad.

Yep, looks like the only spare back we have is Alex Rokobaro. How's his form been in the Shute Shield (assuming he's playing up there).
He has been playing well for Sydney Uni and I thought he looked good when he played for us earlier in the season

Fair enough. I thought he might have been in the mix for this match. The game I saw him in this year (think it was the Reds match?) he looked good. No doubt with the international season about to hit he will get his chance again.

The Rebels site peg him as a fullback - does he play elsewhere in the backline?

He's played mostly on the Wing for us so far.

Can play a bit of flyhalf as well. He's very small though. Reckon the coaches have got concerns about his ability to deal with the physicality of the Soup, especially against a team like the Stormers.

then why did they offer him a contract this time. he was in the original EPS/wider training group/hangers on in 2010 but then went to france. i agree he is small but think his defence is generally pretty good and certainly better one on one than vuna is. think 5/2 shows how Rebels hope to win game against best defence. not sure i agree but missing beale, JOC (James O'Connor) and vuna probably have little option but to go fast and wide with the piggies and tire out a depleted stormers pack at the end of a long tour.

hope it works
