Having a good understanding of plays and been 'rugby smart' doesn't necessarily translate to been good at reading fluid movements.

On the flip side, good players who excel at reading plays and making the right choices at the right time don't always translate to good coaches.

After reading this, I did a little looking into the bloke on the internet.

Some may disagree, but I do like that aside from rugby he appears to be doing a Law course. It gives me cause to think that he might have a bit of an intellect as well as athletic ability. I'm of the opinion that smarts are an assistance to a half as it allows them to construct plays more readily.
I know some outrageously dim people studying Law, don't think it's any indicator of intelligence at all. And by the same token, scholarly intellect doesn't appear to have any real correlation to rugby smarts. I like that he's looking to have a life outside of rugby, so much healthier for these guys to have balanced interests rather than living in a bubble world. A law degree combined with the connections he'll make through the Rebels corporate sponsors and similar and he should be able to set himself up nicely for his post-rugby career.

I see what you mean but I disagree in part. Rugby intellect and actual intellect have very little link.

Apparently Quade Copper is very intelligent at constructing plays and has a high rugby intellect but does some silly stuff.

Contrast that with Michael Lynagh and Nick Farr Jones who were an Engineer and a Lawyer respectively. Admittedly, that was before the professional game, but I would suggest that they'd probably be pretty bright fellows anyway.

I am very personally aware of the great variance of intellectual capacities of people studying and practicing law. However, I'd venture that more often than not they are at least reasonably intelligent. Alternatively, those that are not (and successfully complete their studies) are generally bloody hard workers, which is not a bad characteristic either.

I agree though that a balanced lifestyle is normally an advantage for most players and agree that he'll probably be in a better boat with the connections he would make via the Rebels than he probably would have at the Broncos.

Retired last year. Recall he did, could be wrong though.

Kevin O'Neill did retire at the end of 2011. O'Neill played one test from the bench for the All Blacks v South Africa in Dunedin in July 2008. (Assuming you were talking about test caps, if not he played 7 matches for the Rebels in 2011)

Recall the first game now, a couple of minutes in, him and Dean Mumm having hand bags. Fired the crowd and players up.

O'Niel was almost a lone shining light in Rebels season 1 (along with probably only Delve and Gerrad). I was not happy when he retired.

I'm amazed we plugged his hole and them some with 3 impressive young Aussie locks (though one is arguably more of a 6) and a Kiwi lock who could even be the pick of the bunch (trust me guys, if you watched 2011 and 10 NPC you'd know the man's good).

Very innovative potential recruitment here. Apparently the blokes an amazing athelete and if he never plays a game but pushes the training standard of others thats a good result.
Stand by for a very interesting signing as the hooker to replace Ryan Tyrell. Bloke played in the recent Rugby Championship. Not over the line yet but would be excellent story for Super Rugby and great pick up for the Rebs.

It'd have to be Argentinian I take it?

If it's Juan Pablo Orlandi he will be our best hooker and one of the best props in our squad.

If it's Agustín Creevy he will be one of the best hookers in Super rugby.
And, if it's the hooker that played off the bench while Creevy was still recovering from injury I do not know who he is, but he's probably good.

During the Damien Hill chat on the Rebels website a few weeks back someone asked a question about an Olympian coming on board. Seems we have quite a few well informed people around the traps.

Creevy, Guinazu or Postiglioni?

Will said player be making an appearance for the two blues later in the season?

This would be the Mealamu rumour.

Can't picture this move happening, would Mealamu not already be named in the Blues 28 man squad that allowed the Rebels to poach Manu as he was not named in the 28? I like Mealamu but have to say we have enough Kewi's in the squad already.

I don't want to see us replace an Aussie with another Kiwi, there's a few good hookers around.

If you're in the mood for something gutsy, put some trust into the ACT bloke and upgrade him to a full contract and draft Melbourne Lesa into the EPS.

If you're not, draft in Holmes or Tessman.
