I don’t think it’s blackmailing, reality is that Bruce Stadium has had its day, it lacks in protection from the elements, corporate facilities and accessibility. All factors which any potential RWC stadium would be assessed against.

Raiders and Brumbies both want a new stadium, it’s not a matter of if, but when and to where a new stadium is built. If Australia hosts the RWC, then that would be fair stimulus for the government to ensure they don’t miss out on hosting a match.

The intended site for the new Canberra stadium's the current pool complex next to the Canberra Casino. It's the right size for a copy of the Dunedin one and is smack bang next to the city. If (when) it gets built it'll be brilliant.

But seriously, the current site is very old and reached its used by date. It got a refurb/new covered stand for the Olympics soccer matches in 2000.

There are some design issues with the proposed site, including the type of surface to be used on the ground and the alignment of the stadium away from the traditional North/South orientation to try and get some view in the background (FFS).

It really needs to be built and both the Raiders and Brumbies can request as much as they want for afternoon or 'family friendly' time slots but they get very few and a covered stadium will help and should have a flow on effect for surrounding businesses.

Canberra badly needs it whereas the Sydney situation seems like an overindulgence. Canberra Stadium is plain and simply horrible. In no way does its design suit its environment. With it built into the earth the way it is just lets any heat escape and the cold is just absorbed into the concrete. It's a concrete esky and the view from the stands isn't great either. the slope of the bottom tier of seating needs to be steeper to give a better view of the field.

The problem with the new Sydney Stadia, and that includes the new one at Parramatta, is that they can build the greatest facilities in the world at those three locations, but they are still built in the wrong place.

All three are too hard to get to, and most importantly it takes to long to get home from, no matter where in Sydney you live.

Build them (almost literally) on top of a major rail line, or don't bother.

And whatever they do, make sure there's more toilets than AAMI stadium in Melbourne. How they stuffed that fundamental up is completely beyond me
