Im sure the ARU will release some statistics at the end of the final series, but interesting to note that the SF between Blues and Reds did break some barriers in terms of ratings, i dont know past finals ratings so i cant compare, but pretty impressive figures nonetheless.

I then had a look back a bit further, and the last game between the Reds v Crusaders match was actually the highest rating match for 2011(regular season), 15% higher then the first round match between the Rebels and Waratahs and over double the season average.

Thanks again TOCC - your regular 'hard data drops' are invaluable to assessing where the Aus rugby is sitting in a business and competitive context with other codes, etc. If Aus rugby TV 'crowds' are well up overall (or is it just for Reds' games?) in 2011 v 2010, that'll be a very good thing.

Just a question though. Are the tv ratings in someway able to take in the people that use IQ to watch the game later?
I am only guessing but wouldn't the ratings be based on what signal is being sent to the Foxtel box, it would count as a view- the big question is how many people watch each box? there are 2 people in my house but only I watch Rugby, how does it know this?

Foxtel ratings work the same as FTA ratings - a sample of households have devices which record who & how many are watching what and when they're watching. Foxtel boxes are sending back information to Foxtel or the ratings agency about what is being watched on Foxtel.

As for Foxtel IQ and people watching recorded shows, I have no idea how the ratings agency handles this information within its statistics.

There have been some silly posts earlier in this thread.

Blind Freddy could have seen last year that the Reds were playing great footie to watch and I mentioned then that I enjoyed watching them play more than I did the Tahs - not for a moment not wishing the best for my team. The Tahs have picked up their game this year by scoring tries but it is the élan of the Reds that still takes the eye.

English words don't quite do it - they also have an insouciance about their play that is in counterpoint to the great importance of the result of the game they are playing.

D'Artagnan would have been a fan.

The Reds have been playing great spectator Rugby since 2008 IMO. I loved the potential they showed even as wooden spooners and I feel Mooney deserves a lot of credit for what he put in place as a platform. Not to lessen Link's input, thats obvious, but I do think Mooney's skills at development are under-rated.

But then I enjoyed the Tahs games this year too (other than some bizarre kicking options, it's like they have a self-destruct button in the cockpit and keep saying ooh, shiny button - push it), so who am I to judge :D

Maybe we don't give coaches enough time sometimes.

I reckon Carrozza deserves just as much acclaim as Mooney does: Tapaui, Shatz, Slipper, Lance, Gill, Shipperly and Hanson were all academy players who have stepped up to starting roles at some point in the last 2 seasons...

But we digress..

Whilst fans of other provinces may see this article and say "why do we care"?
Well the fact is more people watching the tournament is better full stop, it inevitably influences broadcast agreements and boosts the sponsorship value of even poorly performing teams.

I hope this sort of momentum carries over to the international tests and subsequent RWC

Well they have had the big games on prime time, saturday night.
The tahs play the bulls at 3am, crusaders on a friday night and miss the stormers.

The reds don't count, cause it counts for them too.

also, the Reds play a different game plan, one that is more suited to the fans. The Tahs gameplan requires a certain level of understanding, patience and intelligence that Queenslanders simply dont posses. ;)

They played the Crusaders at 4.00pm on a Sunday afternoo hardly prime time amongst the Rugby League games going on

The Reds have been playing entertaining footy since 2008 - but it goes to show you how much winning can be the difference in a competitive market.
