Perhaps some unavoidable truths (re the game's revival strategies) are emerging here...

RUGBY union is back. The Reds' renaissance has seen the team double its home game television audience in two years and win a large fan base deep in enemy territory.

The Reds have become the most-watched Australian rugby union franchise on Australian television this season, a major achievement given there are many more subscribers in NSW than Queensland for Fox Sports, which carries the games.

The contrast of the Reds' spiking popularity with the fading lustre of NSW Waratahs was illustrated on April 16 when the Reds attracted more NSW viewers for their match at Suncorp against the Bulls than the Waratahs did against the Blues in Auckland.

Reds home games are 36 per cent up on last season and around double from the previous year.

There is a feeling among the game's viewers that the Reds have done for rugby what MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules have done for cooking shows - make a potentially slow moving pastime interesting.

Well they have had the big games on prime time, saturday night.
The tahs play the bulls at 3am, crusaders on a friday night and miss the stormers.

The reds don't count, cause it counts for them too.

also, the Reds play a different game plan, one that is more suited to the fans. The Tahs gameplan requires a certain level of understanding, patience and intelligence that Queenslanders simply dont posses. ;)

I'll give you patience, but not the others. :p

Good on them for that. If you put a product out there that people want to buy, surprisingly enough they'll do it. The Reds have played attractive and winning footy this year and most of 2010 too. They deserve great credit for that.

Judging from NSW dramatic crowd decline to 14000 the other week, it's something NSW people don't possess either. Sunday afternoons game had everything about rugby, power, technique, scrums, lineouts, passing game, exhillarating running, kicking, dramatic penalties, set piece tries, run away tries, excitement over potential yellow cards.... It was about as dynamic as rugby gets

You are making this too easy.

1. Note that more Nsw viewers watched the reds game than the Nsw game. Must be all qlders living down there hey?

2. Reds played the saders on Saturday Arvo, the blues on friday night, the stormers in sa. Only the bulls were on a Saturday night.

3. Luckily for the waratahs they got to play the reds twice on a Saturday night otherwise it is possible no one would have watched them :)

The tahs game was on at 530, was it on the same night as the reds game they compared it to, cos then it's a poor example as viewer numbers would have picked up with the after workers etc.

Still theredsdeserve the numbers, but it's not the best comparison they could have picked for the story

Do you really believe the rubbish you post? It truly beggars belief the depths of your understanding of the market forces driving the business side of the game and how it links with the on field action and all the aspects that entails.

After work? Not that high a percentage of fox watchers are working on Saturdays!

Pretty harsh comment there gnostic - one that is very close to trolling imho.

WJ makes a good point - there will generally be a smaller audience for a 5:30 match than a 7:30 match. Which part do you disagree with?

What are you so angry about, it's weird to compare two games on at different times, I didn't question it meaning the reds wernt more watched, just it's not a straight up comparison and if itwason the same night did the nsw game draw numbers towards the end ofthegame being shown that stayed for the reds game or did everyone tune in after just for the reds.

It's a fair question, do you believe the shit you post?

I know you guys hate daylight savings, but moving the calendar back a day is over the top.

Hmm. WA hates daylight savings as well.

I don't know why they moved the clock back 20 years though. That seems a bit over the top.....
