Mate funnily enough Stephen actually sits on the board of Stadiums Queensland and I know for a fact would LOVE to be taking more games to regional areas.
He was up there for the Wallabies Townsville test match earlier this year as their spokesperson and was spruiking how good it would be for more Reds games to be played across regional QLD.

Yeah if the QLD Govt subsidise them to offset the match-day income they lose by hosting them there, as the state govt has done in the past.
it’s also why they’re unlikely to play on GC, QLD Govt aren’t going to subsidise that.
one game a year to Townsville is fine, but it’s all $$ at the end of the day that they need to weigh up.

Well if it’s any consolation to those regional areas, the GM of the Reds major sponsor is actively trying to make those deals happen through his involvement with that organisation.

Small? Not small by comparison to the other Australian Super Rugby teams, and still larger than any regional stadium would get.
regardless, Suncorp presents the largest profit margins. That’s the reality of it all… that’s why they’re playing every match in 2027…

average 15K is small in a 52K seat stadium, the other Aus super teams are pretty weak comparisons, the other Brisbane teams are way higher

The Reds made nearly $11m in 2024 from sponsorship and match day revenue, now obv not all of that is linked to attendance, but a lot of it is.
The crowds aren't as good as they used to be, but they are nowhere near as bad as some people make out either

Call me naive but this is why we shouldn’t commit to a smaller ground. It’s not impossible that we recapture those crowds. We got about 45k for the Super Rugby AU final during covid.
Punters are looking for reasons to get out.

Even during those 'down years' the Broncos still averaged more than double the current Reds home crowd attendance. Important to note they also finished 3rd in 2011 so it's not like they were fully crap the whole time, although for most of the other mentioned seasons they sucked.

The Reds crowd figures seem to be more difficult to track down during that period, but I reckon from 2010-2012 at least they would have been on par with the Broncos.

Finals games, particularly Grand Finals aren't a good barometer for whether a team is thriving from a fanbase standpoint. Queenslanders love sport and will flock to any big game events.
I never once went to a Brisbane Roar game during the season, but I attended all their sell out grand finals played at Suncorp in 2011, 2012 and 2014. During those periods their average crowd was only 15k but each GF hit 50k.

Sure, Lions and Broncos draw bigger crowds, as does the AFL and NRL teams in every other Australian city which has a Super Rugby team. It’s almost as though it’s a larger commercial product then Super Rugby! None of this is unique to the Reds.
Draw for 2026 has been released and Reds are playing home games at Suncorp. They aren’t moving to Ballymore or RNA for $$$ reasons mentioned previously, nor will they by moving anywhere for the foreseeable future besides one off games supported by government funding.

McDermotts injury/recovery time frame has been listed(tentatively) as 6 months which puts his return date as around around 9, the home game at Suncorp versus the Crusaders.
Fortunate to have re-signed Kalani Thomas and reflects well on the decision to send Louis Werchon off to play URC for Benneton. Puts more pressure on the Reds to lock up U20s player James Marten now as well IMO. His passing and attack off the ruck looks first rate for his age.
