Queensland Reds 2025

I just think for both parties it’s time to walk away.

The Reds shouldn’t risk losing one of their established guys to keep Henry and I reckon Henry for his own good should head overseas or interstate for what I imagine would be more money whilst he still can.
Why, they just repaired him? And he’s also 26 so should be hitting his prime. I doubt he would be costing the world anyways (maybe if he doesn’t stay on the park). Super rugby shows you need depth in the midfield. This seems rash.
I would think Hunter would be the one to explore other options as he was pursued by overseas clubs pretty heavily last time. I’ wouldn’t be opposed to that, hes served the reds well and would still be wallabies eligible.

Agree. I can’t see too many big money offers out there for Henry. If I’m wrong - good luck to him. He wouldn’t be my prior it signing but we all know it doesn’t always work out that way.

I’d love the Reds to play a pretty consistent 23 for the rest of the year, but teams struggle to play well in Fiji and also to back up the next week. I can see a sound argument to play HMP at 10 & leave Lynagh at home plus take Connor Vest and leave two of our best locks behind. If Henry comes back into the mix then great and I’d a few others come back from the casualty ward even better.

Based on history I’d say playing our best 23 for both games isn’t necessarily the best strategy here.

Surely Les Kiss is talking to all these boys and telling them - don’t worry boys - when I’m wallabies coach there’ll be too ups for you all!!!

Everyone is talking like I’ve just told McReight to look elsewhere.

Sheeeesh guys it’s Isaac Henry. The Reds have looked pretty good for the past 5 years essentially without him. I think Goldsborough and Pakeho both deserve spots above him and would hate to lose either of those guys if they think Henry is going to be above them in the pecking order. Just my opinion.

A few posters here seem very tied to Henry. Is he washing your cars on the weekend or something for pocket money?

That’s because you’re acting like it’s a brave call to cut him loose. It’s not, it’s a rash one. He’s signed through next year and has always looked more than comfortable at super rugby level. It’s just his body that has let him down. If he was to suffer another major knee injury then I’d agree with you. I can’t see him costing that much money because he’s missed so much game time. The Reds have been nailing their talent ID lately so I’m inclined to back their thinking. Pakeho is a real find, and shows why they were happy to let Annan go (who I hugely rated). I reckon they were absolutely astounded how well he’s taken to pro rugby and I think he’ll cost more money next contact that the reds probably envisioned. With any luck Goldsbrough is as good and his added chemistry with Dre could something the reds and wallabies haven’t had since Horan/little.

I don't think that's the problem though.

Henry clearly has talent, the problem is, his body has so far been unable to stay injury free.

With new recruits like Dre coming through combine with our already developed stars, at what point do you acknowledge that whatever is being paid to Henry would be more beneficial to be redistributed to retaining other players in the squad?

I've said this before, I'm a BBC old boy and West's ex-player. I want Henry to kick on.

I reckon if he has another knee injury that’s when you have that conversation. We don’t know the money, but I doubt it would be an issue atm. I’m not adverse to beinh cut throat with our list I just think we’re jumping the gun by tapping this guy on the shoulder (just yet). This year, we’ve needed depth in the centres with injuries and suspension. Be great if Henry could repay the faith in the 2nd half of the season.

But would there be more money for Henry elsewhere? I’d say the reasons why the reds wouldn’t pay him that much would apply to most other teams as well. Henry needs a good uninterrupted run without being injured before teams take the gamble (in my opinion)
Probably not so it may be a cheap hold for the Reds but also then takes a contract away from someone else or younger.... Bit cramped amongst the Aus sides at the moment but the Force are an option as they always have a fair bit of movement amongst the international guys like Tomkinson

At his price he'd get enough offers from lower table UK sides or French D2 teams. He'll get attention for longer than some others because he looks like he could be a weapon.
Contract status as far as I can tell............

2025 - Daugunu, Flook

2026 - Pakeho, Paisami

??? - Goldsborough (presumably on some kind of deal - academy?), Henry
Thanks for putting it like that. I worry there is no way QLD and RA will match what offers Daugunu may receive which wouldnt surprise me to be from the 750k+. I don't think Flook is likely to leave. Loves QLD and I don't think shown the performances to break the bank and be unable to stay in Aus.

Jeez that number of 2025s makes me worried if we also lose a coach. Next guy is going to have to rebuild.

Green shoots with some players coming through though.
Really? It actually looks pretty decent to my eye. Get Daugunu, Uru, Hodgman locked down and that's a great team. Then Asiata, JTA (Jeffery Toomaga-Allen), Blyth, Thomas and Flook next batch of targets and if you keep 2 or 3 of them then you're gravy.

But look at all the Starting calibre players and test players with 26 and beyond next to their name: Faessler, Nonggorr, De Luttis, Ross, LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto), Canham, McReight, Wilson, McDermott, Lynagh, Paisami, Pakeho, Ryan.

Pretty good position to kick off with from compared to almost every other side in Aus.

Full back is the worry there, would assume Jock will be looking overseas to make some money soon as not likely to play wallabies, turning 30 this year. Not sure if anyone knows Mason Gordons status but doesn't seem good. Murray started to come good but not much else there

I think Isaac Henry comes back.

Phil views him as a centre when most in rugby circles sees him more as a utility back and that position is very important when you are carrying 5-3 or 6-2 forward/back splits

if Henry moves on we really need to sure up this position.

I’d be really, really happy if we could keep 2 out of the 3 bolded and shocked if we can keep 5 of those players. There’s such a confluence of factors discussed in the exodus thread that makes me nervous.

It's a good point re fullback. Not sure HMP is a legitimate option there and I know he's been injured but I'm not sure Mason is a Super Rugby player. Other options like Anderson would be stop gaps so Murray it's Murray's job unless Campbell gets a top up which seems unlikely. Or at least a decent one compared to what he could get overseas.

Murray does have aspects of his game that are attractive and at 25 he's hitting his prime. If the brain fart stuff settles the Reds might have the guy sitting there ready to go.

With Smithy going, I reckon that frees up Uru to be given a pay increase + hopefully a Wallaby top up.

We probably then need to find the next generation of tall timber and start bringing them into the professional fold and get some weight onto their growing frame.

One of the biggest issues I see around centres generally is the amount of depth we've lost in those positions over the past few seasons - Stewart, O'Connor, Annan, Petaia, (am I missing any? Daugunu too, but he's seen the light and returned of course).

For whatever reason, it seems that we get to the bottom of the list of available centres every single season, and to me it seems it would be favourable to build up some depth, cohesion, and partnerships there for a little while yet.
