And just for the boys who did miss out in 2015, your careers are ahead of you. Work hard and think like this bloke below. He ended up doing okay.

You hit the nail on the head. There are many talented young rugby players inspired to make the City teams next year after watching this years games. Moving forward, there are a couple of cracking games in the under 13 BJRU competition next weekend. The quality of the division 1 competition has been fantastic. The GPS boys will have to back up now after school games on Saturday. It will be interesting to see how this affects the teams in the remaining rounds.

Nerang in the 13's beat undefeated Riverside. How!? Does anyone know the score for GPS v Easts 13's.
RVS had a number of key players sick. Nerang were also missing some key players as well so it came down to the better team on the day won.

Brisbane Under 13 teams decimated today, something in the water at camp, perhaps. Competition has hottened up.
Kids gossip says Nerang had 16 players on the field.....poor poor form GCRU appointing a Neranr kid to ref kids....

Hello all
I am fairly new to all this forum stuff so please bare with me as forums gossip and rumors are not my strong point.I would like to introduce myself as I refuse to hide like a coward behind a stupid alias,my name is Tipi Kalolo and I am the head coach of Nerang bulls u13s,feel free to approach me at anytime I won't bite.
It has been brought to my attention that a few rumors are running around and from what I have read so far it seems there are some very upset people who are taking this defeat very hard!
First of all I would like to address the 16 players on field rumor,NO this is not TRUE,but I guess the riverside boys would have felt like we had 16 players as they were ran off there feet today so I can kind of except why they would think that so that's forgivable
In regards to the young ref,he gave just as many penalties against us as he did riverside but that's not the big issue here.
Was it the young ref who busted through the riverside defense and score?
Was it the young ref who tackled his heart out on the field?
Was it the young ref who left riversides biggest player lying on his back?
No!
I know how to read between the lines when cheap shots are being fired so
suck it up take your loss like men/woman, stop finding disgusting poor excuses to try help ease your pitiful egos because guess what!
These are only kids they play because they love the game win or lose!
Be a positive role model for your children instead of coming on here and wining about about 16 players or how bad the young ref was,he's a volunteer and yes he is young and made mistakes on both sides but approaching him after to give him a piece of your mind is beyond pathetic.
I don't beat around the bush I never have,I don't like mind games I'm straight to the point so I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say Puglife is riverside associated.
Hey Puglife take a leaf out of my book, don't be a coward and if you seriously have issues with your defeat today confront the right people instead of bringing stupid rumors to these forums about my team!!!
How bout I do you all a favor and upload the game for all to see and let all you forum users judge for yourself how unfair the game was.
Actual real facts beat pathetic disgraceful ego building lies!
I have watched the game twice already and penalties were even.
Don't believe just ask and I'll upload it.
That is if you want to relive that game again.
I do sympathize with riverside as there try scoring machine was not playing today but we also had 2 of our best backs not playing also.
I spoke briefly with the Riverside coach after the game and he was a great man very humble in defeat and also said he was lacking depth kudos to him.
As for the rest of YOU grow a pair,Suck it up and if you have any problems and when I say problems I mean ACTUAL PROBLEMS you know who I am and were to find me and I will be most open to discuss our cheating with you.

On a positive note.
Riverside forwards were outstanding from start to finish.
Showing they have been well coached, have very good structure and are a very fit pack.
No.8 in my opinion was the best player on the field for riverside making great cover tackles and some very good hard runs,he really played his heart out
He done all he could but at the end of the day it is a team sport.
Our forwards started the game strong but after halftime had no gas left in the tank where as the riverside forwards had plenty.
Our backs however easily had riverside covered today who keep in mind had 2 of there stars missing but so did we which IMO leveled the playing field.

Good on Ya mate i agree with all you say . keep doing what your doing because its working.
Also these 13 year old kids may only be 13 now, but this is where it starts. Grass roots so it is serious and nothing you have said suggests World cup to me only competition which is LIFE and teaches them life skills so good on YA.

As it is kids play 3 trials and 14 rounds at Club and then 3 trials and 8 rounds at school

And then at the top end of Club / School they might have a Carnival weekend where there is another half a dozen games thrown into the mix

And then there is the Summer 7's thing that a lot of them do for fun

That's 40 + games of Rugby, or a variant thereof , over 9 months in focus.

I don't think they are short on contact or development opportunity.

Add to which ....some teams / kids from 13 start preparing for their upcoming season pre Christmas.

Some might call that commitment . Some might call that insanity.

If you give a half season option which lightens the load by 8 games and scrap the 7's thing ....does this really retard grassroots Rugby and send us back to a longer term Rugby backwater ? Nah. I don't think so.

Does Australian Cricket suffer because of the fact that Clubs offer half season options that complement the traditional School seasons in Term 1 ? Of course not .

If anything it likely works more positively than negatively across a number of fronts - but here are a couple of key considerations :

1. The participation rate at Clubs , as we know , drops off a cliff from U12 to U13 and then again from U13 to U15. A big part of the reason is because boys and their families treat School and Club as an either / or consideration - and in this processing of it , Clubs will never win this choice. If you give boys and their families a complementary option ( IE : the half season option) that dovetails into Schools ) I believe you will find participation rates in Clubs will get stronger. Strong Juniors = Strong Colts = Strong Seniors . Strong Seniors = Strong Colts = Strong Juniors.

2. From what I can tell a large majority of Junior Coaches denigrate each other as they strive to put their "stamp" on "their boys" that they Coach. The end result is there is a lot of conflict and confusion in a lot of well meaning Coaches saying a lot of different things , and often negatively and at the expense of others , to reinforce their own ego in how things should be . And so there is a lot of "processing space" that is being jammed because of the reality of how this is. It is easy to see this anxiety in a lot of the boys at this age level which gets in the way of their development anyway.

Bottom line ? The easier or less conflicting Junior Coaches can make it in delivery of what they are trying to impart , ultimately , is a good thing.

Further , I've talked to Sports Physiologists, Orthopods , and Heads of Sport about year round specialisation in one activity at the expense of others - and their collective views all comes back to a common belief in a LTAP concept. This basically warns against specialisation too early in any given Sport that retards a balanced physical development and increases injury risks moreso if a developing athlete specialises as opposed to being more rounded in what their physical activities are.

They point to real life examples and case studies.

I believe them.

Believe me , I'm no Nana and I don't do namby pamby. It's too simple to put this one down to a win for the soccer mums . I just think you got to be smart about these things and properly consider an appropriate workload for developing bodies.

Oh and then there is the benefits of more bandwidth in boys heads that is freed up to pursue or expand other interests or even , y'know , get some study done and justify the cost of what we're spending on their education.

Reg, you can't knock Tipi's passion for his team or his kids. There's always rumours associated with the successful. People think they have had more than their fair share of luck or taken a short cut - it's commonly known as the tall poppy syndrome. Yes, very sad but you cannot knock a coach for defending his team. I know it's not the World Cup but blokes like Tipi (whom I have not met personally) are what makes junior teams tick and helps young men connect to this great game's community. They sometimes might be 51% obsessive and 49% passionate but I will take that every time over the alternative approach.

Your points #1 on participation and #2 on coaching conflicts are spot on, although the latter is hard to avoid, even over a split season with rep rugby thrown in too. I believe half season options from Year 10 onwards is worth consideration as size and physicality increase. Before then, I agree with Lionman that the physical challenge of a Saturday and Sunday game is fine. They are only 25 minute halves and most squads are 20-23 players so plenty of scope to rest. There is always the option of missing a game or just playing a half game if your boy truly needs the R & R. Summer 7s I wouldn't necessarily categorise as a "game" but more of a 14 minute quasi touch football run around x 2 on a Friday night. It's optional so don't play it or play the social comp if you are worried about burn out. As for the cricket comparison, it is a much longer game that consumes a Saturday morning at junior level so the half season option makes sense from a grounds availability and time commitment perspective. As a junior, I would play three games of cricket every weekend. That didn't hurt my skills when I played grade at Uni. Australian Cricket has suffered because kids are playing less and we have nowhere near the depth of batsman at the top level as a result. Adam Voges is the current example of this, where selectors had to pick a mid 30s player for the Ashes tour because no young blokes were knocking the door down. But this is a rugby forum so I will stay on topic. 8 weekends of two games over a full season is not too much for a 13 or 14 year old IMHO.

GO,
I have heard the rumours of a 1/2 season and Prey to the rugby Gods that this isn't true. Our boys need more rugby not less. They need better quality rugby than either AIC or GPS rugby offers. BJRU Div 1 teams in 13 to 15 age groups would put 20 - 30 points on the best Equivilnt GPS teams.
If the rumours are true, and it appears it is driven from GPS parents/interest then it will set QLD and AUS rugby back years behind NZ and be a massive win for the soccer mums.
I would agree that post u15 the game is to physical to play twice on a weekend,
However unless GPS and AIC are to play home and away season (2xrounds) then the survival of club rugby is essential.
You obviously have a keen interest in U13 and GPS rugby. You would know first hand that DIV 1 is a much better comp. I ask if you had a son in that age group would you prefer him to play DIV 1 with the quality of competition and superior coaching or play 8 weeks of school rugby, with a lack lustre competition and committed but poor coaching?
Totally agree with you, the BJRU comp is a better.
To me simply every boy can play club, unlike the GPS system, which is limited to players either on scholarship or their parents have the money to pay for their schooling.
You would have to be living under a rock if you don't realise there is heaps of talent running around at club level, and for different reasons, they don't attend a GPS school.
I know some, and they would carve up in GSP as they do most weeks playing the same GPS boys at club level.
I hope they don't split the season either.

For what its worth across the U13 / U14 age groups this season ( from what I know of ) there have been around a dozen cases I know of that include :

* Torn Ligaments
* AC Joint Pops
* Broken Bones ( Collar Bones, Wrists and Tibia )
* ACL's
* Concussions

All while playing 2 x games across the weekend in school season/club season - AIC and GPS

And this is not a GPS schools led thing in what has been inferred as it impacts AIC boys just as much.

Yes , Rugby is a contact sport and injuries will happen . To me , it feels like injuries are more likely for boys earlier these days than it was for us when we were the same age for the facts that :

1. Boys are training more

2. Boys are generally bigger at 13/14 than what they were 30 years ago and there are many more incidences of Super Sized lads

3. Boys are playing more games

4. Rightly or wrongly there is more pressure to compete harder with more engaged Gen X Mums and Dads.

5. Boys still don't stretch properly before or after training and games . Never did . Never will.

I just don't see any good reason to be playing 2 x games of Rugby back to back over an 8 week period for BOTH AIC boys and GPS Boys .

Of course , if boys and families want to - then cool . As Count Myron Malachi would say :
"
Let the Pigeons loose !

However having a choice to play half season that complements School programs is a good option that I believe ultimately makes Clubs stronger and not weaker ( reasons already outlined )

Anyway .....without pigeon holing anything one way or the other ( see what I did there :) ) .....half season .......full season .......its just good for boys and families to have choices where everyone can do what they think works best for them

There are many other reasons for the number of injuries at 12/13/14. One of the major reasons for broken bones in children is the high sugar, high salt and highly processed diets kids in the western world now live on compared to the meat and three veges their parents grew up on. Kids are drinking more soft drinks, sports drinks and fruit juices than milk. Calcium deficiency and subsequent weak bones are growing at an alarming rate. CSIRO research puts it at 2/3 children between 9 and 16 that are not getting enough dairy. I have definitely seen a higher than average number of 12-14 year olds breaking bones and they're not all on the football field! I'm seeing plenty of girls with moon boots and crutches too. It's not from too much rugby.
