jeez fp, it isn't Cooper having a go that is the issue. It is often basic handling skills. He seems afraid of contact - getting tackled or tackling someone front on.

there was something strange in the way he didn't go for the line towards the end there. Perhaps it was a lack of confidence that may be impacting his game elsewhere? I don't know, but that was quite an odd piece of play.

It was really weird, but then he took it right to the line and offloaded about 20 minutes earlier to put Feotai away for his try :nta:

Agree. Earlier in the tournament when his confidence was sky high he was making alot of on-on-one tackles and doing it well.

We've all been carrying on here on TYS how we'd like a couple of the plethora of young five-eighths to get a run at inside-centre. This week there may be two of them: Cooper for the Reds and Beale for the Tahs. I, for one, am delighted with this development. And I'd like to see Hangers, or Lealiifano, at 10 for the Force with JOC (James O'Connor) outside him.

On another note, what's happened to Daruda at the Force?

Air Daruda wasn't cleared for takeoff by the Force. The only one in my mind that has continued on a growth path throughout the S14 is Lealiifano. A bit up and down but overall up. I'd have him ahead of Cooper at the moment, although Cooper clearly has the greater potential x factor.

My view is that Cooper and Beale need to visit sports psychologists on a regular basis. Too much pressure has gone to their heads, literally. And whatever damage has been done, needs to be undone quickly if they're going to reach their potential.

My observation of Daruda (albeit from afar) is that he may have some ability, but he too is aflicted by anxiety and lack of self confidence. Lealiifano, on the other hand doesn't appear to be similarly aflicted.

Wow Dr Phuc, there's some pretty significant assertions you've made there with regards too the young play makers' 'ailments'. Can you expand?

Noddy, it shouldn't come as a surprise to learn that we all, to greater or lesser degrees, suffer from performance anxiety. How we deal with it becomes a significant determinant in how effectively we perform. Some people, like Lealiifano (and I'm assuming this from casual observation) are naturally laid-back, and therefore reasonably well equipped to cope in a stressful environment. Other guys, like Cooper and Beale, on the other hand can be more susepticble to anxiety and can swing from being wildly confident (cocky) to "why the f...k can't I do anything right".

Its when they get to the low ebb that they need a catalyst to bring them back. In the absence of some random external stimulus (a trigger event which turns things around) they could benefit from learning some behavioural management (coping) skills. There should be no stigma about seeing a psychologist (sports or otherwise), all they really do is help you to understand how your brain works and how in turn you can work your brain to best effect.

Are you suggesting that Beale & Cooper should have a quick wank before stepping onto the paddock?

Poor old Daruda is the perfect example of "too much you young." I watched him mentally fall apart in the Force's first season. I wish him the best because he has seemed more assured the last couple of times I've seen him.

Horne seems to have suffered a bit of a confidence crisis, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if JO'C goes through the same thing in a little while.

What they all need, more than a sports psychologist, is some #10 mentoring. Noddy (the real one, not ours) would be the perfect bloke to bring solidity and balance to their games .

This is right in my book.

Christian started out with a strong game in Rd 1 and finished it off with that drop goal under pressure to win the game.

He had a couple of seriously crap games after that and I was willing to write him off but the lad is a steely character and found his way back. And haven't his tries near the goal posts when nothing seemed to be on been a revelation?

Well done that lad. Keep it up.

Giteau will want the 10 job next year and most likely they will give him whatever he wants, but I hope that Friend can somehow give Lealiifano a lot of starting games at flyhalf, perhaps when injuries happen.

Don't knock it. In my younger days it worked for me.

I didn't realise it existed in the days of black and white

Maybe it could help in every day life. I have a trip to the optometrist this morning. Better go and get ready

That reminds me of when I dislocated my shoulder last year and went to the physio. One day she says "You'll have to stop masterbating."

So, naturally, I asked why.

And she said "because I'm trying to examine you."
