my issues with the Reds are well known.

Another example is apparently, and I'm not sure if this is just manager talk, Joe Tamone (former Aussie Schoolboy start, Melbourne Storm winger and new Titans signing) was on the verge of coming to the Reds. He wanted to come home to be with his family and he apparently is keen to play for the Wallabies.

His manager said something to the effect of the QRU doing some internal restructure when they wanted to negotiate. They couldn't so he signed with the Titans.

Wish I could find the article cause it finished with the almost pathetic last line by Mooney "We'll look to sign him in 2011".

Shees.

Now the outside backs isn't our main worry at the moment, but I'd take that kid over Va'aulu.

I saw that too Noddy. Maybe in the Sunday Mail? It was a league article, but yeah it said we nearly had Tomane, but dropped the ball.

What has happened to Greg Holmes? It wasnt that long ago he, and Shepherdson, were two young props doing ok for the Wallabies. Now he struggles to make the Reds 1st XV. What is going on up there gents? Who is your scrum coach? Is it Mark Bell? Is it time to get a new one?

With Morahan and Chambers on the books in 2010 and Vaalu, Davies, Connor, Turinui, Hynes, Fetoai and McLinden still on contract I suggest that there really is no room in 2010 for Tomane as an outside back.

'Braid sticks with Reds
June 16, 2009 - 9:29PM

Former All Blacks flanker Daniel Braid will play a second Super 14 season with Queensland in a major boost for the battling Reds.

Braid, on Tuesday night, confirmed he would take up the option of another year at Ballymore after originally exercising a get out clause to sign with Welsh club Llanelli Scarlets.

Braid's lucrative deal with the Scarlets fell through due to injury dramas after he ruptured his achilles playing for the Reds against the Brumbies in April.

The former Auckland Blues backrower has mulled over his decision for the last three weeks and finally decided after a trip back to New Zealand.

It's a crucial retention for Queensland, who finished second last in the Super 14, after they failed in their bid to poach Wallabies backrower Richard Brown from the Western Force.

Braid gives the Reds a specialist openside flanker in a squad which has plenty of powerful backrowers but few other ball pilferers.

Queensland's high performance manager Ben Whitaker was delighted with Braid's decision as the five-Test forward also played an important role in tutoring the young Reds pack.'

If we lose Barnes I'm going to have to break something. In fact I'm going to have to break many things.

Reds need to be separated from the QRU right now and run as a professional entity. Go ask the Broncos owners/management for some advice on how to do it properly.

If the Reds lose Barnes they will be set back 24months in development, Barnes is the future captain, leader, figure head and poster child of the Reds..

He is quickly building a aura about himself, the players around him respect him and the opposition is starting to fear him. Barnes encpatulates everything that a team needs in a captain/leader, heaven forbid barnes leaves and we are left with Quade Cooper as the senior back

Big news from Qld! No not Connelly, Mark Bell gone

Reds geared for return of John Connolly after team staff axings
Article from: The Courier-Mail

By Jim Tucker

June 18, 2009 12:00am

JOHN Connolly, the godfather of Queensland rugby, could make a stunning return to the Reds after the axing of two senior team staff and another position in limbo.

Reds forwards coach Mark Bell and team manager Brendan Morris were yesterday chopped from the inner circle of head coach Phil Mooney, while rugby manager Ben Whitaker's future is in doubt.

The sackings came after a review of the 2009 Reds' damning 23 per cent winning rate (three from 13) flatlined at the 2008 level.

Queensland Rugby Union chairman Peter Lewis pledged full backing for Mooney in 2010 to build on the Reds' flickering revival but his support crew will be overhauled.

A news tip to The Courier-Mail recently reported Lewis and Connolly meeting in Brisbane.

If Connolly is to make a second coming it would not be as Queensland coach, the role he filled successfully between 1989-2000, but as a rugby director of Reds operations.

"With Mark and Brendan, there is no question of competency just the question of a different style going forward under Phil," Lewis said.

"Professional football is tough. There are casualties and there is pressure on a coach with how he tweaks his coaching and player roster to get better performance. Phil has the complete support of the QRU board."

Yesterday's changes came as the Reds rejoiced over the prized re-signing of Daniel Braid, the former All Black flanker whose achilles tendon rupture inadvertently scuttled a club deal in Wales but opened up a second season in Brisbane.

Last night, Mooney was up front.

"At the end of the day, we've had a review but the buck stops with me and I make the calls," he said.

"It's an extremely tough moment. Both Belly and Brendan were extremely professional in taking the news."

Good news I reckon. Our forwards haven't come on as I think they shouldve. So Bell is accountable.

Plus wasn't there talk that he and Moore didn't get on and that was a key reason why Steve moved on?

See ya Belly. Replacement will be interesting.

Not sure if Knuckles is the man for that role. Is he responsible for contract negotiations?

Our forwards have gone backwards. It would be nice if Foley would come back to Qld, but that might have to wait a year or so.

I wonder if Mike Cron would be interested in a sabbatical?

so who do we get to replace Bell?

A current club coach?

Without pushing barrows, I was bloody impressed with the GPS no name forwards against the uncompromising Brothers pack on the weekend. I'm sure that's more the doing of Steve Philpots rather than Matt Pini.

Brothers coach Zane Hilton has been on the development path for QRU for a while. He worked for them as a Development Officer, and has some coaching responsibility elsewhere, so perhaps him?

Chris Roche at Norths? Well, he's been more about rebuilding and playing exciting footy. Coached the Tornadoes in the ARC, who preformed rather impressively.

Pat Richards has had Easts humming along pretty damn nicely, with a well performed pack. He'd be an excellent contender from club land.

But is a club coach really what we want? Perhaps not a Brisbane club coach.

Perhaps we should be looking at John McKee from is he Eastwood?? He'd be a great catch. Not sure who the other coaches are down there other than Phil Blake, but he's not the forward coach we need. Who coaches Uni and Easts?

Overseas is an obvious point of call. Steve Meehan from Bath (I think he's there) would be an awesome catch, but is probably contracted. Tony McGann too. Would we consider Laurie Fisher (he has QLD links)? Possibly. Who else is up there? Bill Millard? Did some good stuff with the Rebels but left the forwards to Matt Cockbain I think?

Which brings us to the other source - the ex-players. So....Matty Cockbain?? Might be worth a look. Well respected I believe. Can he do the scrum stuff? Might have to rely on DOC Knuckles for that.

Anyone else?

I think Alec Evans has retired by now. He would have been a good choice to replace Connolly or even McBain a few years ago.

I dont know that Fisher is the answer as a forwards coach. How about Andrew Blades?

The Australian says that Whits is gone.

QUEENSLAND Reds high performance manager Ben Whitaker is the latest casualty of the struggling Super 14 franchise's end of season review.
Whitaker has endured a plethora of criticism for his role in recruitment and retention.

The Reds missed out on the signatures of Wallabies Rocky Elsom, Drew Mitchell and Richard Brown while Test inside centre Berrick Barnes has failed to pledge his long-term future to the team.

Reds forwards coach Mark Bell and team manager Brendan Morris were yesterday chopped from the inner circle of head coach Phil Mooney, whose backs coach Damon Emtage has survived for the moment.

Reds chairman Peter Lewis has pledged his support to Mooney for next season.

The Reds feel that they have suffered from lack of stability in the head coaching role with Mooney's predecessor, Eddie Jones lasting just one season after the sacking of Jeff Miller in 2006.

The sackings of Whitaker, Bell and Morris is unlikely to be the end of the restructuring with former Test coach and long-time Reds coach John Connolly poised to return.

Lewis has been constant contact with Sunshine Coast-based Connolly, who will most likely be appointed director of coaching.

Meanwhile former All Black loose forward Daniel Braid has re-signed for another season after an achilles tendon rupture scuttled his move to a Welsh club.
