Thought the GF breakfast was tomorrow?
Looks like you're right - will also be the first time the Selena Worsley Medal will be awarded as the women's equivalent:
The Selena Worsley Medal will be awarded to the competition’s player of the season at tomorrow morning’s Grand Final breakfast event at the Regatta Hotel, alongside the Alec Evans Medal, awarded to the Hospital Cup’s Player of the Season.

Here's one for the forum to chew over this week other than the GF.....what are your thoughts on having the brother/sibling of player refereeing their Prelim Final? This occurred last weekend in UQ vs Brothers 4th grade game. Penalty count was overwhelmingly in favour of the sibling's team who won a close encounter. One team should have called it out when they knew and didn't, the other team should have not taken the field when they found out at the beginning of the game and requested a change in roster. I am the first one to support and defend our refs but this one appears to be a major stuff up.

I wonder if other super rugby franchises do this when a sibling of the reds 'agent of choice' is appointed to a reds game...

I imagine lots of refs have some connection to a player or players in a team, especially in clubland. When I was playing there a couple of refs who were my old school teachers, a few who were dads of my mates and a couple who were blokes I used to play rugby with/against.

Maybe it's just the case that one of the teams wasn't as disciplined? If they found out prior to the game about the brother reffing and started to get a few calls against them, the frustration probably set in and created an issue that really wasn't there.

To question the integrity of a referee regardless of their connection to any player is quite shit to be honest.

Garrick Morgan, Ray Thomas, Darren Rees and Graham Herlihy confirmed as Souths 1st Grade Coaching group for 2023. Congratulations to all and best wishes for 2023. A Magpie For Me!!
It'll be very interesting to see who they can recruit on the playing side off the back those changes

Nice hire at Souths. I just checked his Wikipedia page… he never played QPR? Just coached the breakers… Wikipedia may not be the greatest source to go to…

Morgan? Definitely played QPR

Souths colts flyhalf Harry McLaughlin-Phillips won the U20 POTY too. A good man (along with Willem Johnstone) to start to build a team around

In non-prems news it's good to see rugby thriving in the sub district areas.

Redland Bay have both of their teams playing in Friday night grand finals this weekend. I know they've had a big push of supporters and some ex-Reds and 7s players have been playing this year.

Keeping players and clubs engaged in those catchments is important for long term viability of our code.

The eternal question from St Lucia is did the Tim Lane drop goal go over the cross bar in the 1985 Wests v Uni GF. Kerry Fitzgerald (RIP) says it did but plenty say it didn’t alas a victory for the Bulldogs on the day. I hope no bad karma is hanging around for Sunday at Suncorp.
I remember being at Ballymore on the day and have my theory of events of the day which objectively I will keep to myself.

After the epic draw in the major semi final one could pose the question as to whether Wests & Uni are the closest matched grand final opponents since Uni & Bros in 1979 who played a replay and then extra time was required to split them in the replay the week after.

Read an article on that game this morning written by Jim Tucker. Tim Lane reckons he doesn’t know as hit got whacked by Jeff Miller late . Lane also quoted as saying Fitzgerald told him he would have awarded Wests a penalty anyway for the late hit by Miller.
They all still argue about it apparently.

Garrick didn't play QPR because QPR didn't exist when he played for Souths. The Brisbane club competition was just known as A Grade or 1st Grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade etc. etc.

You’d also think the ref would conflict themself out of the game?

Assuming he was a QRU Ref (or whatever the association is called) - do you really think he would risk his reputation to give his brother a 4th grade semi final win???? seems a bit tin foil hat to me. My brother would be more likely to be biased against me.

Maybe I'm naïve, but I find it hard to believe a ref, who chooses to ref (they aren't forced to do it, and don't imagine the pay is spectacular for a Saturday) then sets out to do the exact opposite of the thing they signed up for... If there was money involved I would understand. But blatantly cheating (that's what is) in 4th grade in front of spectators....
