Qld Premier Rugby 2022

Just had a quick look at the games to come. Lot of the top 6 teams playing one another plus byes for a few yet to be had , deciding the top 4 could well come down to the last round.

Got to love a close competition!
Bond probably have the best chance in the next two weeks to jump over Easts with games against Norths then Souths. Brothers and Wests tied at the top on 45 points (table not updated yet with Brothers win on the weekend). If GPS didn't lose that 5 points earlier in the season they would be top of the table.

UQ with a brutal run home.

If they can find their way into the post season then they will be best equipped to go all the way.

4 of their next 5 opponents currently sit in the top 6.

Unusual moderation to name her which I chose not to do - I’m not slagging her off just stating the facts which I’m happy to hear your view of once you have viewed and in a position to comment

I thought the commentating did seem a little biased at times, in saying that I did not disagree with her comments they were on the money. There is no way Fitzy is dominating that scrum especially in the 2nd half, the officiating of this game was a joke and I dont even like East. The look on Lucas Puts face when Norths won a scrum penalty was priceless, even he looked surprised lol. But give credit when credit is due, Norths got the W and worked hard for it. I suspect Tutaia will be wearing a UQ jumper next season hahaha

I agree. Not taking anything away from Norths who have been building better performances in recent weeks. However, if I was Ben Mowen I would be royally blowing up at the reffing in that game. I come from the school of thought that decisions will come and go each way and if you want to make sure of a win you need to put yourself in a position where you are not relying on one or two calls to go your way, However, every now and again there will come one of those games where the officiating is such that it actually materially impacts the result. I fear this was one of those rare occassions,,,

I disagree. I feel people are blinded by Rhys Van Nek being a super rugby player and having been part of a dominant scrum since his emergence into Premier grade, however if you actually watch him closely, he constantly bores in and his angle is immediately on the opposition hooker. It seemed the ref on the weekend against Norths was one of the only refs to actually pick up on this on occasions.
He tried it in Super Rugby, didn't work and was found out when having to actually pack square. It's therefore no surprise he hasn't played more than 2 or 3 super games as a result of this.
No denying he can scrummage and is incredibly strong, however he has got away with his angle for years now.
Fitzgibbon becomes an unfair target to referees because of how big he is and often will get judged on his angle due to the fact that opposition tighthead props have to try angle in as they cannot match his strength. Its simple physics of a scrum, if a THP angles in, then the oppostion LHP has to go in as well or else will get split off.

After nearly 50 years involved in rugby in some way, I can honestly say the last 2 or 3 years has seen the most diabolical refereeing across the board.
From junior clubland to test matches the way the referees are performing is so bloody poor that it has to be a directive and coaching from the pointy end of the industry.
PS - I am also a qualified and experienced ref that has had the whistle for about 10 years now.

The issue we are seeing with refs ATM , particularly in clubland , is there’s not enough of them.

The top domestic refs have been off doing various comps and the GPS rugby comp has just kicked off. Some refs are being scheduled for games that they are not up to standard wise, but what’s the other option? You can’t play without a ref.

If you had the choice of taking a gig reffing a GPS schools match where you mostly get called Sir/ Mame or game in out in clubland being yelled at by a group on the cans , what would you do?

We’ve seen a decline in how refs are treated by both players and supporters and unless that is addressed we will continue to see low numbers of people signing up to be refs. There have been a couple of lower grade coaches ordered from the fields during games by referees so far this year and at least one I know of who ended up copping a four week suspension for the serve he gave the ref after the game.

Again , who would want to be a referee?

We see plenty of complaining about referees, not sure that helps fix the issue.

.

a by-product or Covid was the need to fast track a lot of referees developments.

Queensland was the biggest beneficiary due to the sole club competition running in 2021 and all the international rugby competition being played in a quarantine Queensland.

if all qld based referees returned to the qld club comp you’d have a super rugby referee doing every game… but this time of year with gps school rugby and the international calander getting into full swing… we are having to elevate even younger guys.

it’s not Queensland fault the rest of the referee stocks in Australia aren’t up to scratch.

There is no difference to the location to cop a spray.

The worst I ever experienced was at a GPS school. (and I am not bagging GPS schools, I went to one and sent my kids as well)

I agree it is how we treat refs that has the effect of less taking up the whistle, but on the other side of the coin the refs need keep games alive and moving and not be so pedantic if gives opportunity for dissent.

Tough balancing act I know, especially when Little Johnny is playing for his next Wallaby contract.

Total agree 100%.

Watching the game, I thought the ref was good, missed a few things, but with no TMO, that is to be expected.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this young guy advance through the referee ranks over the next few years.

I think thats abit unfair, dont forget Richie Asiata was also in the scrum and what TH pushes square these days. Every TH in the comp goes in on the angle at some point, Eloff Cabous and Latu Talakai (and yes I know he plays LH but he has also plyed TH) are probably the most blatant - the realism is no one really knows if the TH is purposely going in on the angle or if the LH is pushing TH inwards. All the Ref can do is make an educated guess, but what I do know is the Ref was standing on the opposite side of the scrum the entire game, so he is either making a blind call or getting the call from the Touchy. Based on this, it is my educated guess that the Ref didnt know what he was doing. If I had a dollar for every time Fitzy was square I would have approximately $0 dollars.

Do not get me wrong I dont think Rhys is a saint and I am actually happy the Tigers got their tails clipped and even better had to go off to their 75th Anniversary and talk about it some more, I think its great - the point I am making is, no one really knows whos fault it is when it comes to scrummaging and the unbalanced penalty count for this infringement in particular affected the outcome of this game massively.

awesome post.

getting on here and telling all the water cooler critics to stop bitching about stuff and be the reason to cause the change.

I coach a side - won't identify grade or club, and I disagree with the point that the refs now are worse than ever. This year we've had some absolute shockers, and we've had some really good ones. Best one we've had this year so far was in a close loss. The main point I do want to point out though is that regardless of performance, I've found this year's group of refs far more approachable after games and far more willing to both provide and receive feedback. And they're young. Hopefully that means things improve.

I couldn't keep up.

Refs should be made to watch the calm demeanour and interpretation of Wayne Barnes. There is no back chat. Just respect.
But he lets the game flow and the players and spectators appreciate it.

I really believe that Southern Hemisphere refs go looking for penalties. They play little advantage (by that I mean discretion, not finding a fault and calling advantage) and as a result, the game does not flow. That is why the set piece has become so important but as a spectacle the game has gone backwards.

Here is to more discretion that encourages the games to flow...
