How to kill rugby for the rugby watching public #1 - blow a scrum penalty after the ball has been cleared from the scrum - GPS v Uni 81st minute. Ridiculous!!

I take it your team suffered as a result? If in the 81st minute a team infringes they have to still be penalised, and if other team does not get advantage, unfortunately the penalty has to stand. But would be frustrating if it your team was the one that offended I know.

As the clock wound down in 3 of the 4 games there was the possibility of a draw. QPR20 is a great contest again.

As I see it we have Uni,Easts, Bond, GPS, Bros in the mix - Sunnybank & Wests are on wood & better get on a winning streak but Norths & Souths are out of finals contention.

Actually just looked at the table and Norths aren't necessarily out of it yet as they have had the bye but Souths unfortunately can continue building for 2021 & 2022.

To put the penalty in context , UQ’s try to square the game up was a pushover try from 5 metres out and there were quite a few scrum penalties to UQ in the lead up to it .

It was the last play of the game and the scrum had already been reset once , with UQ putting heaps of pressure on and the Jeeps scrum going backwards at quite a rate before it collapsed.

Think there would have been a pretty clear picture in the refs mind as to who brought the scrum down.

As a UQ supporter who has witnessed GPS dominate scrums in a similar fashion over the past few years , it was nice to have something to cheer about come scrum time .

I’m sure the favour could yet be returned once Jeeps get a full complement of props back .

Was down at the kennel to watch the battle of the bulls...In that respect the bullsharks were too strong for the bulldogs. Best for Bond were 13, 5, 4 and 7. For Wests the 11 was very quick (but will be sore tmrw). Wests forwards dominated the scrum and lineout where bond was poor. What aided bond was wests slower forwards. Wests really need some quicker ball playing fowards particularly in 7 and 8. The Bond backs were quick with ball in hand but kicked it away too much. Extras kicking also not that great. Bond are playing to potential but it may not be enough against the likes of Uni and GPS. Wests need a rebuild which Im sure is coming soon.

Not sure the term rebuild is really appropriate with club footy in Brisbane. The clubs are at the mercy of the talent they attract, obviously there is an element of recruitment but it more so depends on who’s coming through the ranks.

Carter Gordon was a huge draw card for Wests and I think he still had another year left of playing club rugby before really cracking professional level. Him leaving the Reds will hurt them for next season.

A rebuild for a club IMO can only really happen from the bottom up , recruiting new talent for 1st Grade is a short term solution only .

Look what Brothers have done with their Rohrig High Performance Academy and use that as a blue print .

Focus on your Colts ( Academy) program , attract top talent straight out of school/ réengagé your juniors and with a good coaching setup , provide a steady stream of talent into grades .

The whole club becomes stronger , not just 1st Grade and the in turn attracts more talent .

Brothers didn’t win the big GF last year , but they were by far the top club across all grades and probably will continue to be because of their setup.

This will put them there abouts more often than not in the years to come .

Was at South's yesterday for Magpies vs Tigers and thought I'd hang around for the Women's game. It was disgraceful in terms of shit banter being swapped but to see the game descend to the point where an all in brawl took place was beyond words. From my vantage point I witnessed East's reserves and supporters storm the field and get involved. I wonder how the QRU deal with this when there are no ARs or video footage generally (I didn't see the game being filmed). Totally unbelievable and won't encourage females to rugby!

Not true. Uni did have issues early in the week & flagged it with Brothers. On Thursday Uni contacted Brothers & reported that after players passing fitness tests etc they would in fact be able to go contested down to 3rd Grade. Brothers response was that they’d already planned to go uncontested so would in fact be going uncontested.
Uni had 2 fresh props on the bench. The reserve Hooker played in 2nd Grade after Brothers decided to go uncontested.

Agree with your post - interestingly down at GPS I would say their colts program and attracting top high school players has been hit and miss over the last 15 years. I think they have only nabbed maybe 3-4 premierships across all colts team since 2006.

They do, however, easily field 3, sometimes 4 teams each year, so that’s 60 odd Colts running around. From that maybe half go on to play grades, so 20-30 players a year injected into the men’s teams. It really shows with depths across the grades. For a while from 2006-2012 I think GPS were consistently winning premierships from Reggie’s down to 5ths.

If I have it right the suggestion is that second grade props are taken out to be fresh on the bench for first grade. Third grade go to second etc. Resulting in a cascade through the divisions of uncontested scrums.

In this case the facts are that Uni kept two fresh props in Premier Grade after Brothers confirmed they’d go uncontested in Reserve Grade.

Being involved in the lower Grades week to week in clubland there is an general lack of front rowers!

So rather than picking a fight here, I had started with "Really?" Now if my astonishment proves correct there is little to be outraged by. Surely.
