You can't keep everyone.

There were rumours Mason was signing with the Force but then that didn't happen. Now the Tahs? He's obviously keen to get away from playing behind QC (Quade Cooper).

if he did want to go then the Brumbies would be his best bet at starting.

Reds should release Jake McIntyre and sign Mack Mason in his place, Mason has shown more in the 2016 NRC then Jake has in the previous 2.

Really? Mason got dropped a few weeks ago... he is talented but I have not seen much at NRC and even QPR level for that matter. Playing him at Super Rugby on what I've seen will be a big risk. He needs 2-3 years of development IMO to develop & harness the full range of skills to a 10 needs.

McIntyre is a known quantity, albeit not much. He has 1 year left on his contract. Realistically if QC (Quade Cooper) goes down, any slim chance of a successful season is going with it. They have invested so much in Jake they are not going to cut their losses now. They will most likely ride the contract and not renew.

Unless there is an experienced, journeyman 10 out there, that if signed as cover, could keep the wins rolling whilst QC (Quade Cooper) was injured, there is no point signing anyone else. But because much of the Reds success will sit on QC (Quade Cooper)'s shoulders, no one is going to fill this void.

I feel the problem McIntyre is that he plays the ball so deep we never make it past the ad line unless someone has a brilliant ball carry while Mason has showed his ability to play the ball at or just before the line

The Reds should release both and aim to get Sam Greene back!

Anyway, @Bulldog I hear the Taj Mahal of rugby club houses is about to be finished at Sylvan Rd? Must make you boys optimistic for 2017/18?

Great to see Michael Broad and Fletcher Dyson involved.

I wish these guys all the best but I hope that they can make some changes to the playing group otherwise it could be a long 2017.

Just back to the Mack Mason thread - my final thoughts are these:

1. I appreciate that the Reds can't keep everyone;

2. #10s take a long time to develop into Super Rugby quality - even Quade (who I think will be great in Super Rugby 2017) took time to develop at that level;

3. it is just a shame that the Reds have now lost the 3 best home grown options that could have been the next long term #10 - Sam Greene, UJ Seuteni & Mack Mason;

4. Granted these 3 all probably sort greener pastures (greater financial return) before their time but does the fault lie with the players (or player managers) being greedy or could/should have the Reds done more to retain and develop them?

5. Mason probably needed a couple of years playing Premier Grade before his defence and game management would have stood the riggers of Super Rugby;

6. It is these type of decisions that the "player recruitment and retention" people at the Reds need to be held accountable for.

Another one of these will be whether the retention of Isi Naisarani (Bne City/Souths #8) would have been a better option than the recruitment of the latest Wallaby - Leroy Huston??

Good points there Bulldog but it's hard to judge without knowing the full story.

I have heard that the Force threw BIG money at Naisarani (weighted heavily in the 2nd year. Let's wait to see if they are still around the).

Mason may be the same, it just strikes me that he seems to be the one doing the chasing. I've no doubt the Reds want him to stay and have offered him a contract, but they can't force Mack to stay.

In saying that, I wish more was done to keep and develop Greene

Reg I have no doubt that we lose most of these guys because they get ahead of themselves - I doubt that Mason would have seen much time in the Reds next year and would be surprised if he finds his way to a Waratahs bench spot in 2017 but I would have liked seeing him develop his game in QPR.

And yes I too would have loved the Reds to have retained Sam Greene.

From a coaching point of view - I know Shane Arnold had been appointed as the GPS coach for 2017-18 but I am hearing that he may well be appointed as the Reds backs coach- can anyone confirm that?

If so then will GPS need to find a new coach or could he do both?

This is disappointing for Bulldog fans but it will take time to climb off the bottom of the table.

Wests caught sleeping at the wheel there. Nice new clubrooms and grandstand though.

They have been sleeping at the wheel for far too long. The clubrooms seem to have consumed the committee. The committee is accepting all of the praise being afforded them for the design and construction of the 'Taj Mahal' however there are very few willing to stand up and accept responsibility for the Doggies performance over the last few seasons. Tyrone was based on the Gold Coast and probably some help with transport costs may have been all what was needed. I am sure there will be more departures of players if the likes of Norths are willing to help in this regard. I am interested though, who was/is looking after player retention?
