No problem there SSJumbo for the Tigers, their lower grades/colts' efforts have been consistently in a state of underachievement for a few years now!!

Interesting because not that long ago Easts won the Doughty Shield -maybe 2010?

Interesting Tiger Tale. I have always thought that success, long term success, is built from the ground up!

And as a supporter of the Tigers does it disappoint you that it is currently top heavy! My opinion is that the most undervalued trophy is the Club Championship Trophy.

When the Magpies were the dominant club in Brissy in the 90's I am pretty sure all teams were either winning or at the very least contesting finals.

Securing the Doughty Shield is the number 1 priority for Uni every single year. IIRC the goal of winning the Doughty Shield goes back to when Premier grade were bottom of the ladder (or thereabouts) and the only finalists, or finals contenders, in the club were colts - and we're talking less than 6 or 7 years ago here.

I think Eastwood have won Sydney Club Championship once in the last 10 years.

Easts won in 2009.

What about Brothers? Looking up the Doughty Shield results and our last was 1996! I don't know if TT or Ironingman would remember, but I recall Brothers always having strong grades (prior to last few years). It's gone a bit down hill since then.

Finally, University might do a clean sweep of Easts this weekend. With Reserve and Premier Grade being the only real hope for Easts. GPS did a clean sweep of us, with University nearly doing the same (premier colts being the only winners) this year.

Undoubtedly winning the Doughty Shield should be the aim of every club.

But like everything it is cyclical - I remember when nearly ever grade final was between Bros and Uni and then Souths went through their golden era when every side use to make the GF. Easts had every side in the GF incl. Womens in 1999.

Filth - Uni are strong across the grades and I think you are correct in saying that only Easts Prems & Reserve grade have any chance this Saturday but you never know.

I not sure where the others are from Crusher, but Sef Faagase doesn't drive up the M1, he Logan boy who travelled down the M1 when he was at Breakers.

Fair point Dan54, I was meaning more the move from Albert Park initially to Sylvan Road and now St Lucia.

SSJumbo - the only thing that I have heard about disharmony at the Nest is that allegedly "Doubles" Daly has been told by some at the club that he's not welcome.

If that is the case that would be a travesty.

Do you know anything about that?

Doubles has been down at Bottomley a few times this year and on some of those days there was a home game at the Nest. I think he was down at Bottomley on the day Souths played Sunnybank which seems strange.

I know Easts picked up two back rowers from Souths in the off season.

RugbyReg - David Wilson was an outstanding player and he is certainly well respected at Tigerland.

He came up from Sydney last year or the year before to speak at an Easts lunch.

As for the 1999 RWC Wallabies - Cockbain along side Herbert & Tune - there were 3 GPS lads in the team.

Souths had - Crowley, Kefu, Foley, Horan, Little, Connors (Brett Robinson was controversially ruled out with injury)

Clearly Eales(Bros) and Wilson(Easts) were also in that side so there were a heap of Qlders in the squad.

SSJumbo - 2000 was the last Premiership for the Magpies and they have featured in only one grand final since then (2009).

Never mind though plenty at Souths still live in the glory days!!!

But for example Jackson Lennon is not even Tim Horan's bootlace (most aren't).

They were very fortunate through the golden era to have so many talented footballers pull on a Magpies jersey.

It is amazing how many former Magpies now have their sons playing juniors at Easts.

Souths' downfall has had a bit to do with Sunnybank's rise. A lot of players attracted to the Bank instead of going to the usual spot for south-siders.

Easts and Souths had some great battles, though.

Wests, Easts and Souths were the strong teams in the very late 90s-early 00s.

One of the 90s GF was played late at night-time around 8:30pm, which you would never hear of now. I think it was Easts v Souths or GPS v Souths.

The 1995 (souths v easts) GF and the 1996 (GPS souths) GF we're both night GFs but it would have been the 1996 GF that you were referring to Filth it was a cracker going right down to the wire.

How remiss of me - Easts have claim Ben Mowen as a Tiger to have Captained the Wallabies even if it was just for a brief moment in time.

And David Codey coached Easts in mid 1990s when he came over from GPS with Grant Batty and brought Richard Graham with them.

Yeah but Codey was playing for SOuths when he was Wallaby captain...... I think?

I am still perplexed by the Magpies slide as a club and their apparent "talent drain".

Their traditionally strong Prem Reserve grade team is getting belted. It is nearly unheard of.

If you look through there and see the teams they had on the paddock last season compared to now there has to be something happening up there. I have watched them play(and win i might add) twice, but they lack any real structure or cohesive attack or defence structure.

I am just wondering if there has been internal issues. Any ideas from in or around the nest?

All second hand from me..... but apparently the Prems coach isn't well liked & he also decided to have a bit of a clear out last seasons end & had hoped to attract some talent from elsewhere that didn't come off. But I heard all this through the rumour mill. Add to that the premature leaving of the experienced Mafi Kefu just before Easter & the loss of the very talented Muirhead at fullback to Sydney mid season & the lower grades start to stretch thin.
Absolutely ludicrous if what you say about Doubles is true TT. Doubles is the quintessential club man, he's been there since I was a junior (And that was a long long time ago!). Something must have gone down if true. :(

I don't know if Souths are struggling too much in the lower grades, they must have a bit of talent because every team below Prem Reserve, is in the top 4, including Premier Colts. Obviously the success of their Premier team is leaving a bit to be desired but the rest of the club seems to be doing alright.

It doesn't sound good SSJumbo. I think they've been punching above their weight in Prems so far this year, it's a shame because they looked to be building nicely in the couple of years previous.

Penguin & SSJumbo - I agree with you both about the Doubles situation - it is a real shame because I don't fathom a trip to Chipsy Wood without seeing Doubles, but I didn't see him there a few weeks ago when Easts played Souths at Chispy Wood.

I am disappointed for Doubles himself.

Trust me this line of enquiry is not me being a Troll or having a crack at the Souths Club.

Surprised to read the comment about Michael Broad - I though he was an excellent coach who was doing well at the club - sounds to me a bit like the inmates running the asylum!!! Maybe he is too much old school for the modern youth who don't seem to want to put in the hard yards - no success comes without sacrifice!!

I certainly haven't detected a massive drop off in the lower grades at Souths - they put a clean sweep on Easts in Round 2 at Bottomley this year, and won all bar Prem, Res & 5th grade in Rnd 11 against Easts.

Was Codey playing for Souths when he got sent off in the RWC87 playoff?

What Brisbane clubs did Codey play for? I thought he played somewhere else before joining Souths - was it GPS?
