TSS have had two games of a fashion.
Last week against All saints it was a decidedly one sided affair however it did show the sheer agressive power and skills of the TSS forwards - geesus they are a unit this year. Tries thankfully save for one or two were kept to those that ought to score tries.

This week saw a rather timid affair with the A and B squads divvying up against each other after AB Patterson called on extreme common sense and withdrew from their schedule trial on Tuesday. Nothing too spectacular, plenty of handling errors but the A Team is pretty well settled or rather confirmed.

The trials did show however that those who really haven't done the hard work through their senior years have no right to lay claim to a 1stXV spot solely on the basis of finally reaching grade 12 and three months of hard work.

This Sunday sees the annual trip to Lismore against Far North Coast and then after Easter it the schools tournament at lovely Armidale where I am told there is not a room in the house for the weekend's activities.

TSS had a very impressive hit out against FNC in Lismore.
TSS ran in about 15 tries to 2, maybe 3 with the 2 wingers bagging 5 each. Each of the opposition tries were with the B team and the differences were staggering.
Standout was no 6 Will Kleimeyer who is maturing very nicely.
The back line seems set with some great mix-n-match combinations available with most able to slot in two or in some cases three positions with each and panache.
The forwards are looking particularly menacing with some very good play as a unit.
All now having a good break before the trip to Armidale after Easter.

any 2m specimens running around this year?

A few of the TSS group might go close. Terrace had a tall kid the other week, but I imagine he's short of 2m.

Watched Brisbane Grammar (GPS) play Villanova (AIC) in a trial last weekend.
Grammar held at bay for first half but ran away with it in second half mainly through the middle with big centres and outside backs and a very agressive ranga lock.
Grammar may do Ok this year in GPS comp with 6-7 "new" players of high quality in the team.
That shocking loss to State High last year must have hardened resolve to get team winning again.

Must say however Villanova pack was outstanding best schoolboy scrummaging I have seen for a long while.

Off to the Coast tomorrow to see the TSS v BSHS trial. Will both sides be playing their #1 teams?

TSS and State High today had an arm wrestle of titanic proportions.
That TSS came out the ultimate winner is testament to some great fitness and what can only be described as a never ever say die attitude.
State High have a magnificent attack however it does seem to revolve around Walter Petaia and Chris Sautia with Curtis Browning providing some brilliant midfield support as well as attack. State High attack is dangerous. State drew first blood with a great backline play with overlap for Emerson Cunningham to cross in the RH corner.
TSS had one of those days. In my opinion TSS won the set plays for the first half, State won the broken play particularly around the T/R/M and TSS won on points. That TSS was in front at half time came from a Lindsay Crook intercept nearly on his own line with State in full attack. No one catches this kid if he gets half a break.
State came back in the second half when TSS started replacing players. Chris Sautia obviously eats soap he is so slippery but some brilliant try saving tackles from TSS kept State under relative control.
TSS extended the lead by what can only be described as a piece of brilliant athleticism by Crook again with a meat pie right in the far, far right hand corner, as far as you can get before going over the dead ball line.
State hit back through some very good play between their backs with again Sautia and Petaia instrumenting a great try to give State the lead 19-18 with 5 to go. Within seconds State were attacking again and looked certain to score in the RH corner with Emerson Cunningham however Lindsay Crook crossed from his opposite side of the field and made his fourth try saving tackle.
From a 22 restart TSS gained possession, he took a ball deep in his own 22, gave a brilliant run to the opposition 10m line, off loaded to Malan who took it to the State 22 where TSS got a penalty and slotted the 3 for a 21-19 lead. It should have been full time.
From the kick off TSS ran some great attack and a kick chase again by Crook saw him tackle the State receiver 15 out from the State line, get to his feet, regain possession, kick ahead and dive over for a third meat pie.
TSS ultimate winners 28 – 19.
A totally great game, it could have gone either way but 3 penalty goals sealed the game. Yeah, TSS won and that is a great psychological triumph – considering TSS didn’t give up any penalties worthy of State having a shot at goal. Actually there were very few penalties and points were at a premium so the 3 that Cox slotted were very needed relief and turned the game to TSS.
Both forward packs today were great. State very good in the loose, TSs won the set pieces.
Great performance by Slipper from TSS and Browning of State - this is a battle royal and it is open who will get the GPS jersy in June.

It all kicks off this weekend:

Round 1
Sat 8 May BBC v BSHS, TSS v ACGS, Bye BGS
GT v TGS, NC v IGS

You'd think State High will smash BBC (40+) and an impressive Nudgee will do likewise to their opponents. Ipswich usually have a massive pack which tires. Match up of the round is Jonesy's Churchie boys taking on his last years team TSS at the Coast. Should be some feeling in it. Both teams have done lots of preparation and injuries should be few at this stage of the season. GT (without scholarships) should still be too good for the country lads. Bris Grammar could have a weekend without a loss.

Favourites for the comp (as usual) are State High, TSS & Nudgee. Ipswich as the dark horse.

And I've got a bird's eye view of one of the games this weekend! I'll hear the collisions.

Who is 'Jonesy' coaching the Churchie team?

Where did Tom Barker go? maybe the QLD academy?

Jonesey is Ian Jones, Churchie coach, previous 4 years at TSS and long term Ipswich before that.
One of the best schoolboy coaches around.
Just needs a good meal.

Same with Gary Nucifora, Matt Taylor and Mulvihill. All have a professional set up at schoolboy level= rapid rise through ranks. At least tattsy has shown some goods with reds this year.

NC have an entirely new coaching staff.
The ones brought in are really great and approachable, the ones who are long tem NC are typical long term NC.

Should be a great game at Southport this weekend - TSS V Churchie - great bragging rights between the schools and coaches. Churchie coach (Jones) this year was TSS coach in 2009 and 2008. TSS coach Wallace appears to have fitted in with the TSS ethos and has built good rapport with the boys (and school)
From reports previous the No.7 as well as O'Connor (yep Michael's son) are the boys to watch with big No. 8 Slipper, No.6 Kleinmeyer, No. 10 Cox and winger Crook the TSS lads that will lead the way for their team.
Love GPS atmosphere, school warcrys, drums and so on.
Certainly a better comp than Premier grade, clean and fast.

Having seen both sides this year it will be like Premier Graders vs U13. Hopefully Churchie can give them a good run.

The Outside Centre for TSS is the biggest human I've ever seen and one of their locks in the 2nds not far behind.
