So is it fair to say, the "Headmasters agreement" is basically redundant? It just costs a term at State School to launder the swap? Game on!

Correct -but it has been that way since the Keebra High - ACGS debacle in 2013 . Started round 3 in 1st xv because "he was not on any bursary". Another parent just pays.
Mind you - Digby Ione & GT was not far off in 2004 -but there was no HM agreement in those days.

Careful with the scholarship/bursary/fee relief/recruiting/poaching etc talk.

Leave it general and non specific. Accusations and a race for the moral high ground will only end in tears.

If you must, we have a thread specifically to vent and rant about scholarships and recruiting/poaching.

Interesting clip

New York Jet's 2nd Year Defensive Tackle Leonard Williams ( 6'5 and 138kg ) didn't even play ""Football" in High School until his Senior Year . Up until then he played Rugby. He was taken 6th overall in the 2015 NFL Draft out of USC.

Rugby is now the fastest growing " football code' in American High School Sports

The number of Universities playing Rugby has doubled from 500 odd in Calendar Year 2015 to just over 1000 + in 2016.

I note the King's comments a day to two ago re : Nudgee's Cal Pritchard heading over to play College Rugby joining a few other GPS Old Boys already studying and playing over there , notably , BBC's Captain of Rugby from 2012 , Braeden Hood at Texas A and M.

With the growth / activity in specialist College recruitment businesses don't be surprised to see some young men going down this pathway as an alternative

Absolute rubbish. You are shit stirring.
His cousins play in my sons RL team. His mom told he was happy at BBC -but they will not offer 100% plus uniform like GT now does.Having won 3 premierships and lost only 2 games in 4 years , she had nothing but good things to say about coaching and program at BBC -
Great player-huge get for GT.

I do admire their stance but it will not help BBC win a 1st xv premiership and is the same reason the number 10 at TSS went there rather than to BBC with his WA mates(the Ngamanu boys).

If that is true, what a pity for that young mans family. I never would of expected GT to behave in such a "golden trinkets" manner. Very degrading and wreaks of a meat market mentality. Edmund Rice would be turning in his grave. Very disappointing and dirty.

Headmasters agreement , school loyalties, blah blah blah.

Who cares, make it open slather, let everyone pinch from each other. That way we don't get this behind closed doors negotiations, put it all out in the open, and let the true character of the player and his family guide what is best, rather than having a filter like a headmasters agreement distort decisions. If the player doesn't want to be there he wont play well. You cant demand loyalty from someone, just ask Julia Gillard , Kevin Rudd and Tony Abbott. Abbott shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as the other, apologies Tony.

Plus its better for Rugby. Free trade is the only way to go.

I wish that young man all the best, I have heard some wonderful things and I look forward to seeing him play.

I quote verbatim from correspondence with one school's director of recruitment some weeks ago.

"the GPS Headmasters agreement essentially means that we are not permitted to offer scholarships/fee remission to any boy who attends another GPS school….even if the family are leaving for good reasons. This is something that has really been magnified this past year especially as it was pretty loose a few years back."

"We are not keen on taking boys from other schools unless they approach us as a potential full fee payer."

With that as the context it's surprising to hear that school's are "pinching" kids from other GPS Schools.

I'd personally much rather see kids from regional Queensland with huge talent that just need a final polish get the scholarships, rather than swiping kids from State High or another GPS School who are already in the system.

Sorry boys some of the content here is delusional some of the discraful offers to some boys IMHO borders on criminal. there are boys who will change from one GPS school to another and repeat grade 11 for no good academic reason apart from the lure of playing first XV at an other school or with a view to making Aus schoolboys and then Professional Rugby.

Talk of a headmasters agreement is complete garbage they are approaching boys from other schools all the time. Having said that some of the parents are no different and are shopping kids around like it is a slave trade.

Well what else is new. Here is a trivial pursuit question.
How many boys in the 1977 and 1981 Aussie "invincible"schoolboys teams repeated senior at another school to make the British Isles tour by the Aussie schools that happens every 4 years?
Hint Downlands was a big beneficiary.

Dear King

I am not sure "pinching" is really correct. The BSHS boys and the BBC boy who are all transferring to the same GPS school -obviously have an interest in doing so-it is a two way street. That said-they would not be going unless there was a good offer on board.

I think it would be nice to actually have a written copy of the Headmaster's agreement published on the website, or on here.

What do we really know about it?

Clause 1 - a Rugby scholarship-holder will only be First XV eligible if he starts on the first day of Year 11.

Clause 2 - no fee assistance will be offered to students of other GPS Schools

What else does the agreement cover?

clause 3 . If a boy at a GPS school or an AIC school wants to transfer to another GPS school on any form of bursary then the parents of the boy must notify the current school that they intend to talk to the other GPS school about transferring.

The loophole in rule 1 is easy to manipulate( ACGS 2013) by another parent paying so the boy is then " full fees"
The loophole in rule 3 ( GT 2016) is also easy:to transfer to a non GPS school for the final term .

I have also heard that GT 14's (next year 15's) have reinforced even further an already talented backline. In my opinion BBC 14's last year were equal best backline in the comp. The lads from TGS 14 A's this year were impressive, I think the best back line. The 9 and 10, 12 and 13 were very talented and the individual combinations worked very well. Word is they have a new 15 turning up this year on scholarship that is also something special. I believe the 9 / 10 / 12 / 13 are all on scholarship. Not sure why they have bought so many backs? In my opinion the few games I saw, size is what they lack in the forwards, tough but small.

TGS are building solid depth in this age group and will rival BBC next year, particularly in the backline. Exciting for the boys in years to come. I am predicting a TGS premiership in 2018 or 2019. Everyone will have forgotten my prediction by then anyway... The drought breakers /rain makers age group.

TGS 14's only the 12 and 13 are on scholarships both first year and come from South Australia. 9 and 10 been there since grade 7 both full paying unless something has change which I am not aware of. All so aware of another import for this age group next year. Also aware of a couple coming in for grade 11 but details a bit hazy. Seem to be a fixation on bringing backs in don't know why quite a number of good backs there already but could use some forwards in particular positions. Also TGS seems to be upping the ante on the imports and this is starting to cause quite a bit of angst with parents. Sometimes you have to wonder for who's benefit is this really all happening for.

Me thinks GT ( without a boarding house or a history of non caucasions)has gone a little overboard in recruiting a certain ethnicity.exhbit 1 is their under 13 and 14 Tand F relay teams this year. But hey - good luck to them- all great kids.
I see issues on the horizon without a proper induction program in place( speaking from experience!)

Lets look at the facts here

u13 4 boys 1 at GT since grade 5 of no obvious ethnicity 1 boy from a traditional feeder school of no obvious ethnicity, 2 boys who fit your stereotype one of whose older brother has been at he school for a few years.

u14 4 boys 1 at GT for 3 years no obvious ethnicity 1 scholarship boy who doesn't fit your stereotype, 1 new boy who does fit your stereotype and another student who came to the school to play soccer and doesn't fit your stereotype and was the fastest in the grade.

so in 8 boys 3 maybe 4 fit into your 'rugby' based scenario

No doubt GT has changed its approach to sport and scholarships but the hysteria around their entry into the arms race has for a while now been way over the top.

Do we really have to bring up ethnicity when talking about these kids?

How people think a kid's race is a valid talking point at all when discussing importing is beyond me.

Schools form relationships with junior clubs. GT have been aligned with Sunnybank for a while now - hence the number of young Dragons at the school like Daniel Sitanilei, Kyle Leofa, Isaiah Grace in years gone by. Brothers have always been a traditional ally and Uni now has the strongest Terrace flavour in Colts.

Churchie have Easts, State High and Souths/Sunnybank and now Easts, BGS by GPS, Nudgee by Brothers, BBC by Wests.

Thanks sorry my information must be incorrect. 2 x full fee paying 9 and 10 that both made Queensland Country( as informed by my friend "Gary Owens") is very fortuitous for TGS. TGS are building that is for sure.

Which of the players in the QLD 1 and 2 sevens sides competing in National schools 7s tournament yesterday and today will be 'Players to watch' in QLD 2017 GPS and what schools do they play for? I'm from NSW and interested to know as I watch the odd QLD GPS 15s game via steaming but have little knowledge of the Schools and players. Qld 7s teams and link to streaming of today's finals found here...

QLD Red:

1. Tom Gilbert (BGS) - outside centre
2. Tyrone Metuela-Sepaia (GT) - ?
4. Joseph Small (NC) - flanker
9. Cooper Whiteside (IGS) - flyhalf

QLD White:

4. Xavier Soli (NC) - centre
6. Solomon Stone (BBC) - fullback
11. Isaiah Naawi (NC) - winger

These are the players in contention for First XV spots next year.

Of these, Tom Gilbert (centre) and Joseph Small (No.8) are established stars while Isaiah Naawi (wing) is lightning fast and should be very handy.

Xavier Soli from Nudgee is another player who might be poised for a breakout year.
