I think the notion that Tom Barker ripped the guts out of BBC Rugby is grossly unfair . It suggests he was a lone operative in an effort ( the right effort at the time ) to address a historically shyte program
Success has many fathers but failure is an orphan as they say
Except that, even with the "failures" of recruitment en masse across all age levels , it has served a reality jolt of what it means to be relevant . And this in itself has changed , and will continue to change the culture of BBC Rugby . More than what a lot of people can yet see.
But that's Ok .
The Green and Black will just keep going about their business which isn't too different from other schools that are also putting in most efforts to better their programs and compete .
Across the board - the new thinking is building nucleuses from U13 to U14 with possibly 1 or 2 tweaks as they mature toward open competition , the common philosophy being , give the boys an opportunity to truly integrate into the broader school community and give them the best possible opportunity to develop as men that will serve them well in the outside world even if they don't play Super 15 Rugby or NRL.
Which will be the case for 95% of them.
