That was back in 2009, I think the rules have changed since then.

I doubt in reality the contract was worth much at all.

You'd hope not, for a bloke that didn't pan out well at all. It'd be a tough gig dishing out "contracts" in any sense of the words to 13 year old kids. Work ethic, growth, maturity and intelligence can be pretty tough to predict.

Looking forward to the 15A NC and BBC clash next week, just looking at the score line for both of them this weekend.

League contracts are a numbers game.
They try at 15 to get 50 there abouts onto contracts.
This gives them what they believe first chance with those boys if they continue to play with no injuries and realise their "potential" at 18.
As with AFL clubs who do start all around the country and even overseas from 10 to identify potential talent!
As with everything it depends on talent, hard work with training to their chosen sport.
But sadly there are still parents and boys out there that believe a contract assures them of a future and do not put in the hard yards in GPS rugby.
What they do after school is not an issue to me what is that some so called future rugby or league stars are not playing with courage and heart for BBC.
No one in life gets something handed to them on a plate.
This includes non Scholarship boys also.We need heart and courage.

BBC have the talent but just because you are in year 12 and been in the 1st's for a number of years does not entitle them to a place if they are not looking towards the greater of the "Team"

NC & BBC both scored 22 against there opponents today, some talented BBC plays were away today and Nudgee will have home ground advantage, should be a battle.

I'm not picking on you specifically Ear but you guys throw around words like contract, scholarship, or agreement etc when in truth they aren't anything like what's being implied.

Most kids that people claim are on contract were simply given some kit from a club as a promotion or encouragement.

In a lot of cases the kids parents paid for he kids to go on a camp or something similar and the gear was a perk.

Some clubs offer help with school, but the most I've heard about is around $1000. These "scholarships" are nothing of the sort.

It's very rare a kid in year 10 is ever signed to a proper contract, and just about as rare in 11 & 12. There's the odd talk of a super star receiving 100k as a development player but I guarantee that 100k is not cash in hand at all. In truth most genuine contracts with league clubs are not all that, they're usually not worth much money, well cash in the bank so to speak money.

I'd love to see conversion numbers too of the genuine contracts into A grade league players. I'm not sure it's all that great.
Well you can't be further from the true ... Take it from me ... There are kids in contracts larger than 1000 as 15 year olds ... I'm not going to say you must have a rugby background and not a league background ... And if your not in the game I understand how miss informed you must be... Do you want me to introduce you to three players from Churchie or maybe 2 from BBC or 2 from NC firsts and you can ask them direct... Lol

Joel Hagan from Nudgee (Class of '13) signed a league contract at 13 according to the above.

Funnily enough he didn't end up playing any games for the First XV over his school career to the best of my knowledge, @Taipan may be able to correct me.
Your example is from 4 years ago ... Nrl clubs can't sign players until they are 15 ... The contract can't be registered ... And yes they are over 1000 in the bank ...

GT didn't lose a game from U13-U15 and the it falls off badly.

There needs to be a whole of school trophy IMHO

I would not be too critical . I know GT did not win an under 16 or open match despite last years 16b to d being undefeated. But as has been said earlier on this thread what happens in under 16 does not always reflect on what happens the next year in opens- especially against TSS and NC. This because against those 2 schools in particular you will be playing many 18 years olds and many boys in their 2 nd year of open rugby.
This is not a criticism but a fact . In last3 years in particular those 2 schools have dominated the open grades because of this. Good luck to them I say.
On the other hand the ACGS 2 nds were average last year and have already lost to IGS this year.

Correct. How much did the cowboys pay to "buy out " a broncos contract for a ??current 1stxv fullback .

You misread my post, I covered and summarised a lot in a very short time, so perhaps it was misleading. That $1000 I referred to was a criticism of what some people call scholarships, which often is just help with things like text books. I know of two indigenous players on such a deal.

As for genuine contracts, they exist but are always for a lot less in real terms than what people let on.

Yes my background is union, but perhaps assuming what I do and do not know is a little presumptuous.

From my observations today the 12 for GT was terrible could not read the play and he's defense was to soft, fell off to many tackles.
GT really need to get Roycroft back in the team.
Horan at 10 I thought was ok today, he's kicking game was great.

Sorry but unless there is an appeal of some sort Roycroft will not be back as the GPS sports committee voted on this last Thursday . He started too late. Got to admire GT for owning up to a bursary and not starting on day One. Bit different to the same situation last year with a prop forward at another brisbane school who became " full fee paying" overnight .

Word is a certain Churchie player is in the same boat as Roycroft but no one noticed yet

My example was meant to highlight that this sort of thing has been going on for years, if the NRL laws regarding the signing of teenagers has changed since then I wouldn't know, it's not my area of expertise.

Do you know of any under 18s (13-16 specifically) from this competition that have been offered contracts from that were greater than $1000?

I'm sure there have been plenty over the years...

Allen Oxlade (6)
They didn't have to pay a cent !!!!!!!!! It was up for renewal and like the papers stated he had 4 NRL teams, the Reds and a few AFL teams chasing him...And yes his is a contract as apposed to a scholarship. I think plenty be surprised if they knew what his deal was, put it this way the Broncos were devastated..

How bout we get the talk back to the GPS competition instead of discussing personal matters no one knows about contracts blah blah blah. Somehow I get the feeling that BBC will click this weekend against NC.

Yeah. Not bad for the worst TSS side in 10 years.
TSS were a crack side last year but when they came up against the only 2 other teams that could play (NC & ACGS) they couldn't beat either. So what's the point of scoring 52 tries and breaking GPS records but finishing 2nd?

Lets not judge the quality of the TSS team till they play the only 2 other teams that can play (NC & ACGS). Neither GT or BBC have beaten TSS in about a decade. And that's probably across Opens not just 1st XV.

Agreed, I was not overly impressed by TSS, but they are better than I expected them to be. I was very disappointed with GT and the way they completely capitulated in the second half.

As expected GT forwards are going to struggle to go 70 mins against the bigger packs, and their scrum is not up to the better sides.

Additionally losing Roycroft has hurt badly with combinations especially in defense, Nikau looked in two minds a lot and he lacks the lateral movement to be making late decisions.

Having said that you can only beat what you face and beat them they have and well. TSS backrow was very good and in the second half completely dominated what is GT main strength.
