In conclusion, I foresee ( at this stage) a top 4 shootout between ACGS, TSS, BBC and NC with any team capable of winning on their day. I won't tip a winner, it's too close to call at the moment but I will say do not be surprised at a 3 way tie. You heard it here first.

Nice summary. Would still rate GT higher than TSS though, they have around the same numbers coming back from last year, but GT will have it over TSS fowards with the likes of Leofa and Moroney running around, their backs will likely be matched with TSS having their wingers and outside center returning, but GT also have a center, wing and flyhalf returning, tight match in the backs but easy question in the fowards.

Hmmmmm.. tips for 2014??
Early days yet G&G aficianados but the swirling mists in my crystal ball have cleared enough for me to make these comments.
1. The current state of affairs in terms of the GPS rugby season almost stand as a conspiracy by southern unions to prejudice Qld performance at National carnival level and by extension, the GPS premiership race. Training and playing at National standard before building a proper base for it through trials and training and competition matches is patently ridiculous. The only benefit I see this year is that teams can contest GPS trials as whole school entities, not barbarian style trial sides. Best wishes to all terams for an injury free trials period.
2. I rant like this as point 1 because it throws the whole competition open if injuries are taken in the National competition. BBC and maybe Churchie are a great example of having a season cruelled by this sort of injury a year or so ago respectively.
3. I think Churchie are going to be hard to beat with great depth across the field and some real excitement machines like Perese and Ponga. the size of BBC's forward pack is frightening. Does it have the mongrel will be a key question this season. 4. This said, Churchie's aspirations hinge on their performance against two key bogey sides for them- TSS and BBC, both of whom have scuttled Viking hopes in the last 4-5 years. Both games are played away this year for Churchie which seasons those contests even more enticingly. NC are thought of as Churchie's great rival but the last two times NC have won the cup, Churchie have beaten them on Ross Oval to take the edge off their seasons. I'd suggest NC need to worry about Churchie, not the other way around but that game will be another humdinger.
5. I can not see any of the rest upsetting much for this top 4 although I would never discount IGS to muck something up for someone just for the sheer hell of it.

Accurate and knowledgeable as usual. But why TSS ? I thought they had eight 18 year olds last year ( all trying to make the UK tour) and they have all left . Is this correct
Please please confirm at least that -Third is not in his 4th year in firsts and that Guttenbeil has gone.

Third & Guttenbeil have actually graduated!

When was the last time TSS were outside the 3? Big call backing them out!!!

Couldn't agree more, the depth of players at NC, TSS and ACGS makes it hard for them to finish outside the top 4. Obviously there are exceptions (ACGS 2012 comes to mind) but usually this is a good rule if there are no explicit contenders.

True TSS deserve to be considered a premiership threat simply due to the strength of their rugby program. An interesting season ahead: I' leaning to
1. NC
2. BBC
3. ACGS
4. TSS
5. Terrace
6. BGS
7. TGS
8. IGS
9. BSH

NC have rights to #1 due to their clinical consistency. I think they have some tough away games this year??

BBC are interesting, they need to address cultural leadership issues - no point having imported muscle if there aren't calm consistent heads running the show. TSS away round 1 will give us an indication if the green machine really means business.

ACGS were a tad unlucky last year and have some experience to build on. Their halves should ensure that they maintain good structure for the full game: any team that does beat them will have to play two full halves.

TSS are TSS and will come to play rugby: plus there are some cool heads in Freddy and PJ etc. However, they do seem to be in a rebuild stage.

Terrace- would not surprise me if they are playing for a higher placing in the last few rounds.

Can't see the others as serious threats in enough matches.

Good call. Although Perese is the star for my money.
Smith will be playing at 12 0r 13.he has not played enough of the 15 man game to play in forwards.tension at BBC about him wanting to play league on Sunday(stay tuned)
Interesting that Ponga & Smith both made the Australian under 15 league team last year. And both are going to league.Ponga has already signed with Cowboys and Smith is in the Broncos academy .What is the QRU/ARU doing to stop this?
Anyone know who is the boy from WA who is now at BBC & has gone straight into the reds academy?

Excellent point.

will they get a real flyhalf(not a converted 12) for once in the last decade-who can close out close matches?? They even played Genia at flyhalf!

Mate, complaining about leaguies calling us yawnion and then using the rugby league unflattering term of Mungo is kinda the pot calling the kettle black a bit. I don’t think it is the NRL or league that are using GPS schools, so much as it seems the GPS schools are interested in and go looking for the talented boys whom are being developed in the league system. These boys have shown their worth imo – none more than Perese mate. I am told Perese is now a rugby convert anyway and has given his league away. Churchie have a few boys who are known in the league arena as the top of their game including Perese, Ponga, Sua and Mason. These boys are talented enough to play what they like. Smith is another boy about to make the rugby world talk. Talented kid IMO. Nudgee have also poached league boys for years. Actually I hate to say it but I think the league boys are the ones to watch closely this season.

Sorry I'm just fired up after reading the article about the state of the ARU's finances. On a side note there should be an enquiry into how John O'Niell and his mates managed to squander the $30 million profit from RWC 2003 without even setting up a 3rd tier etc. Pretty angry with the ARU about development at the moment

I can agree with this. The development of our young rugby athletes is non-existent and we could learn a lot from the league rivals in that sense.

GPS teams are wide open for now. However anyone wanna predict how many boys from league will be there while we are on the topic.

I am getting really tired of the NRL / League constantly using GPS schools to develop creative, attacking passing players by giving them scholarships only to then have their 'fans' come out and call Rugby all the usual bogus nicknames like yawnion, rah rah etc.

ARU / QRU / GPS / Everyone should insist that players are not contracted to a mungo team if they have a scholarship. Develop your own players in your own school system.

They tried that with the Aussie Schoolboys(after Craig Polla Mounter left for the Bulldogs thy day they got bacK) but had to give up.
The 2 best players in the Aussie Schoolboys this year(ask Phillpotts and Rapp) were the 2 giant centres from Newington(Milne &?)where they next year ???NRL under 20 already signed.who was the most exciting /leading scorer in Qld GPS last year=Josh Bowen.Where is he this year?=broncos. The number of GPS rugby players in NRL under 20 is staggering.See the NSW thread on this issue.

That'd be Jayden Nguma, played exceptionally well at the national 16's last year and was recommended by the ARU to many schools, BBC were lucky enough to pick him up. Great player, excellent feet and brilliant ball skills, lacks some size, but like Josh Boywer, who needs it when you're a superstar.

Rumors going around BGS that Logan Spaander has now started at the school after returning from NZ due to family reasons. This is a massive boost for BGS with Lanskey and Logan having played with each other on numerous occasions. Those 2 with Tom Sly should cause havoc for oppositions all across the board. BGS ladder prediction: 4/5

Fairly certain Angus Scott-Young (ACGS), Alex Mafi (NC), Izaia Perere (ACGS), & Tyrone Southorn (BSHS) will be standouts in the GPS comp...

I'm coaching BGS' second XI cricket side this year, and Spaander rocked up to training on Thursday to have a go with us. Athletic little bloke no doubt, but not a cricketer.

All the same, he's at BGS
