IMO there is no Smith because there is half a dozen 12/13's who are just as big and fast and the deciding factor is they are all 18 year olds and have past history in the GPS comp.

While I agree that there are plenty of good centres going around with rugby experience, there hasn't been a back his size in the GPS competition as long as I can remember.

On Tyler Campbell, I understand the depth in playmaking positions we have this year, but I thought his play merited at least an invitation to the second round of trials

Fox has played league for ipswich brothers since he was 7. .

He started union because he was never that great (qld standard consistantly) at league, ie 'bright future in league'. Thanks

13 boys from BBC in GPS trials.
The whole forward pack that played against Nudgee plus Christianson.
Also 9,10,15 11 plus Ikatou.

Why no Smith???-he was the most destructive runner against NC & IGS.
Good for BBC but bad for GPS.Did the Broncos put a stop on it?If so,why is Ikatou playing?

Are u sure Ikatou is signed with the Bronco's
And no Bronco's didn't put a stop to Smith!.....He just wasn't picked

If this is the case all I can say they are going to have a good 16A team n think about the depth they will have in 2015

Yes I believe Tyler Campbell has been hard done by, seems to me that there is a lot of politics involved in schoolboy rugby. Been following this young man since he appeared on the union radar, believe he was playing league but has a strong union background. He is such a gentleman and this will only make him stronger. From what I saw in the trial he made copious amounts of line breaks, he is a very physical defender, managed to save a definite try by twisting the player on his back over the try line. His kicking was impeccable. How he didn't get a second invitation is the conversation around the traps. Maybe he will repeat next year for a chance once those riding on their fathers shirt tails move on.

TSS, TGS seem to be hard done by overall really. Queensland and the ARU need to pick on form at trials not on past form. Would be interested in visiting these teams 2-3 years to see how many are truly dedicated to the game of union? Or is money wasted on players just filling in time before league contracts come their way??

I think at this age and knowing what the opposition is going to be like in Sydney size does come into play, when the selectors are ticking the boxes beside the players name.

Not sure if you've seen this young man but is one of the taller backs around definitely towered head and shoulders over GT number 10.

4. Poor decision making
5. Will be exposed by the likes of Te Rupe, Pritchard, Perese and Page.

He has his merits and what he does have is aggression and it works for him in league. I would be surprised if rugby selectors didn't pick up on this.

Saw a few BBC 15A games last year and Ikitau is an obvious talent with serious potential and offers a lot more than just ball running.

I get what you say, and you're probably right in regards to his shortcomings.

However, defence, skills, discipline, attitude ("serial grabbing" is an attitude problem) and decision making can all be coached.

Beyond weights, what can't be coached is size and speed. If a player has the body to go far, with the right coaching, he will go far. Syd Smith has the frame to be a wrecking ball centre for every team he plays for, and BBC has the necessary coaching to refine his game.

He will be a force during the season once he has a few games under his belt. Next year he will be very bad news for every other 12 in the comp, mark my words.

It's like someone said to Hodor in GoT - "If I had your size I would be king of the world". Teach him how to use it more effectively and he will be. He is a genuine monster waiting to be unleashed.

On the Campbell selection debate, a lot of the reasons why a few TSS boys got over looked can be pointed directly at the coaching staff.
It looked to me by the numbers that they had on was "look at me i am usually in this position but i can also play this position", so fit me into a team any way you can so we can say we had 15 players make the GPS teams this year.
So what position does Campbell usually play.
They had an 11 playing at 9, a 15 playing at 10, 10 at 12 and who knows what other numbers they had around the field.
They player that i saw that i thought should have got an invite to the second round was the number 11 playing at 9, he on many occasions drew in two defenders an unloaded the ball creating the space for the 15 and the 10 to run into holes.

Nothing against the kid I'm told he is a good lad, but I'm sure he would have had a lot of good coaching by now so it really doesn't explain some of his deficiencies like handling skills and tackling. I'm not convinced he'll really improve in those areas after a couple of games, will probably take at least 12 months, just my opinion. Only time will tell, I'm happy to be proven wrong though.

Truer words were never said. Barker and Phillpots would have to be the best coaching duo in schoolboy rugby in Australia, so hopefully they'll be able to bring out some potential. I'm looking forward to getting a good look at him in the regular season. He's certainly being talked about

I said nothing about Wallace been appointed as Aussie coach, I was just pointing out that TSS were trying to promote their boys. That they could play several positions and therefore if you don't like me here, try me there.

A little bird told me that the big problem for BBC is not how he plays but whether he stays.
It seems the "lure of Logan and the sweet smell of love" is more attractive than the mundane life of a boarder at BBC
