New kids at BBC this year: Wilkins, Swain, Tuuga, Laefano, Dempsey, Gunter, Helms and Leyland. Adding on Quick, Sala, Bowen, Peterson and McLean, that means about 10 or more players in their team will be on 'scholarships'. So will the team be:
1. Helms
2. Saunders (is he a hooker or loose forward)?
3. Sala
4. Swain
5. Leyland
6. Tuuga/Gunter
7. Peterson
8. Taukipulu
9. Dempsey
10. Bowen
11. ?
12. Russel
13. Quick
14. Mclean
15. Wilkins

Only 10?is that all.they have a long way to go(in years and numbers) before they catch a number of other shools.who cares-it's about the game not the scholarship.That issue is a separate thread on this forum all together my friend.

PS--Christian Laefano has been there since day 1 grade 8!His dad coaches 16 B team. Number 11 will be Sam Edwards who started day 1 grade 7.

Nudgee v Downlands should be a cracker on Saturday. I was under the impression that these sides didn't play each other anymore after a series of fiery stoushes back in the 90's - the fact that Downlands was generally pumping Nudgee wouldn't have pleased the powers-that-be at Nudges either.

If Downlands is a non- importing school as I suspect it may be I can't see how they will compete against Nudgee imports but time will tell.

every gps school has imports. basing a donwlands loss on the fact that nudgee imports is a bit rich. so downlands will lose against all gps schools? downlands all play tough footy, never underestimate them

Not more drivel about scholarships . This thread is about rugby.There is another thread about scholarships that has twice the posts as this one. All squeaks about scholarships should be on that thread. Just be thankful it is happening and not like NSW GPS where 2 schools do not compete in 1st xv any more and have lost enrolments as a result. BTW Bronson,Russell , Saunders , Leafano and others have been at BBC from grade 8.

Taipan, there is a lot to commend about the Downlands rugby program. Best of all they do wonderful steak burgers but they also embrace the touring and hosting culture of rugby very well - probably an even better touring school than IGS. GPS teams use them as a bye round for junior sides but no 1st XV in their right mind plays them because the bye is more useful as injury rehab day or a team training, lunch and outing to watch your next opponents. Downlands 1st XV can write their season stats as they choose about who they "defeat" but they are playing 2nd XVs every time. Their only legitimate 1st XV is the derby against TGS which is keenly contested and ensures TGS never get the value of the bye that other schools do. If Downlands do import, then the kid is only there until a GPS school makes a better offer - like Mac Mason to Churchie. Here's a tip for free - BSHS- Downlands - last game of the season for seniors - will be like a UFC cage fight.

I assume the Christian you refer to is Christian Malalau. Good player and his father is a great bloke and coach too!

Add to this the other Swain brother, Jon Seabrook (NSW Country U15 2012), Tom Jellie (lightning fast outside back), Jerumi Nanai (been at BBC forever), Lucas Palmer and Gavin De Wet and you may even have enough depth to cover for injuries for once.

I've never seen Terrace field an understrength side against Downlands. Whether that's because they see the need to field a full strength side to win or just a matter of pride, they always play their best.

Not surprising there was a lot of good props there. Plenty of big ball Carries by props in the second round of trials and while sala is a big boy he was not as quick or as fit as the other props making the big breaks. The games at the state champs is much quicker than first XV so can't really take the players who struggle to keep up at first XV level.

I’m sure there is a lot of good props out there, didn’t see many at trials. Some boys maybe be fit, but there were a few seen walking around in the wing which a try or two were scored in the wing by two props. For the likes of Evander, who is a strong and pretty fit player. He looked a little lost as prop and didn’t really show any fitness and his first year at prop but made 1st gps team. No clean out work, pick and drive. I did however enjoy watching him play last year for TSS. Interesting to see how he goes today as prop against BBC. I’m predicting a TSS win for sure, too many injuries with BBC! J
