QLD GPS 2025

I think it comes down to the recruitment of teams in the Capital City Comps such Hospital Cup and the Shute Shield. Unfortunately if these young players are looking for where they go next in a Super Rugby Team, there are only four of these in Australia, compared to 17 NRL sides, soon to be 19. There are not enough "spots" available in the national rugby teams. It is the club sides that need to recruit and nurture these guys, but this has to come with support.
I agree WLF, there simply isnt enough spots to keep all these great players. What would your thoughts be on making a nation wide tornament where sides from Hospital Cup and Shute Shield play against each other. Would this help encourage more to stay perhaps.

1. Kalyn Ponga (ACGS) - his highlight reel speaks for itself. He is without a doubt the best player GPS has ever seen.
2. Micheal Lynagh (GT) - For the younger generation, Lynagh was a player with the most sublime handling skills, coupled with a precision kicking game, acceleration and a perfect boot lace tackling technique. And he also kicked goals. He had vision and was ice cool under pressure, as emphasised when he called the last minute, winning backline play in the 1991 World Cup quarter final to prevent the upset of the century after Ireland had led the Wallabies. That was Michael Lynagh. He was simply the best.
3. Quade Cooper (ACGS) - One of the most skillful footballers of all time, he is a walking highlight reel and was part of a fantastic team with Pocock in 2007
4. James O'Connor (NC) - Imagine playing wallabies a year after graduating from school. Amazing feat for an amazing player.
5. Harry Wilson (GT) - Robust backrower who rose quickly post school into the Queensland and Australian systems. Originally a NSW country kid, Terrace’s first sporting love at Terrace was cricket. Indeed he was a batsman capable of plundering quick runs, but now uses his power game in rugby.

HM:
Fraser Mc'Reight (BGS) - Is the best flanker in the world at the moment if we are counting Ardie Savea as an 8. He is a wonderful person and player.
Pretty good list. Mine starts with Wally Lewis, and also includes Elton Flatley and Chris Feauai-Sautia. Lynagh, Cooper to round it out. Honourable mentions to O'Connor and Mat Rogers.
Ponga was incredible but Mason, Su'a and Perese had as much if not more impact in that team.

100% but then it comes down to coin doesn't it, and being able to afford it. Rugby just doesn't have the resources to do this at the moment. When it comes down to it, the players want to play sport for a living. Who wouldn't?? I know of quite a few that have gone to League, but if had the opportunity would have much preferred to stay with Union.
The only way to drive revenue is to increase viewership and interest. We have seen a large increase this year, which comes down to how successful Super Rugby was, but restricting most games to Stan is not doing us any favours. We'll have to wait and see what the Rugby World Cup does for us. A successful Cup for Oz will help immensely, but Joe public still needs to be able to watch the game on TV. We have an U20 World Cup in 3 1/2 weeks. Nine should have it on GEM or another of their channels. Unfortunately, unless you're a Rugby head, you wouldn't know about it.

Keen to see how some of the teams go in this weather. With some schools heavily reliant on their backlines, their foward pack will really need to step up this weekend.

Hey Jackal Jules, just wondering how the boys went, I was eager to get to the games but due to unforeseen circumstances I couldn't.

RB - Out.

Hey rugby enthusiasts,
does anybody know the results from the weekend for the NC, BBC, BGS trial? Couldn't find any posts about it scrolling back through the all the blabber.

Dennis, I’ll be honest mate, your argument doesn’t really stack up. Grammar have been near the bottom of the GPS for years now, and yet DC haven’t managed to beat them. Now that BGS are finally building some form and actually improving, to say DC beat them at “full strength” doesn’t really add up, especially when you dig into how the game was decided.

From what I heard, the match came down to a bad intercept and a conversion attempt at the end, in a trial. And to be honest, taking the kick to win in a trial just feels off. Trials are meant to be about testing combinations, rotating players, and prepping for the season. Not treating it like a grand final. If you’re celebrating a win off a flukey intercept and a pressure kick in a practice game, it says more about mindset than ability.
Elijah may have been playing, sure, but this isn’t tennis. You win games with 15, not one.

All respect to the boys involved, but let’s keep the takes grounded.

Cheers, D.B
Absolutely spot on, D.B.

The way you’ve broken it down is exactly how it should be looked at. Grammar haven’t exactly been a top contender in recent years, so hanging a “statement win” on a narrow trial result against them doesn’t really hold weight.

Also completely agree with you on the trial mindset. Taking the conversion to win in a friendly? That’s not what trials are for. It’s about building chemistry, trying out options, and getting systems right — not chasing glory.

And look, the Nudgee trial scores from the weekend speak volumes.

Good on you for keeping it grounded.

Cheers,
T.B

TGS vs State High this weekend in Toowoomba. TGS lose kruger and rupeni this week, they will come off the bench due to school commitments. I’ll be interested to see how they work around that and what they do with the side this week.
