QLD AIC Rugby 2025

I think poor old Iona have been decimated by injury and illness. They were such a powerhouse two years ago in the 10As. They’d be mightily disappointed with how the season has turned out.
At worst I thought they may finish 3rd this year... did not expect 3 losses by round 4.

Eddie’s knocked off Pat’s too
I’ve been waiting for Eddies to fire a shot. They’ve always been competitive in this cohort. Hasn’t helped they lost their best player, Tiger Campbell, to Ipswich State High’s rugby league program.

I don't often get to see much AIC 1st XV, but managed to get along and watch the Villa v Iona game yesterday. Whilst I'm aware that Iona were missing cattle, Villa controlled the match from the outset. Any time they were put under pressure, they simply stuck to their structures and then played beautifully. Some of their second man shift was excellent in terms of timing and lines. Their 10 controlled the game, their entire backrow and front row were outstanding and the fullback is a gun. The talent is there.

Iona never really got into any rhythm and had a lot of errors in them. Couple that with the Villa backrow being so quick and effective on the ball, they never really kept possession to launch any meaningful attack. The big number 12 tried his guts out, the 10 tackled his heart out as did some of their tight forwards but they had to - they had no ball. I assume they'd be a completely different proposition with all their missing players on deck though.

Round 4 has already partially happened across the week:

Villanova v Iona: 33-7
St Edmunds College (h) v St Pats College: 33-17
St Laurence's College (h) v Marist College Ashgrove: This is the game that shapes the AIC 2025 season, Marist College Ashgrove beating The Laurie's side last year meant a lot to their pack, Laurie's eager for Revenge and taking their mark on history this season, This game can go either way, it will come down to the last 10 minutes and how loud the crowd is for each team. Hard to make a tip for this game, but I believe Marist will enjoy their trip home on Saturday marginally winning 2+.
Padua College (h) v St Peters: Padua far too strong for these Peters men, Padua 25+.

Does anyone know which school is in contention or front runners for The Rugby aggregate shield which is given to the school with the best win to loss ratio this AIC season?

If Ashgrove hold the ball they win by a comfortable margin on Saturday. If not, Lauries will punish them.

Surely Ashgrove a long way in front in the aggregate. Iona have fallen off a cliff this year in all age groups.

Will be interesting to see the team Padua put out on Tuesday afternoon against St Peters. They have a few players in the Met North team in Townsville this weekend and a big game against Laurie's the following Saturday. Might rest a few to get them right for the weekend.

These teams of the week can be odd. Sometimes the loosing team has more players than the team that beat them comfortably. Seem to favour the bottom teams.

Marist College Ashgrove now in the hot seat and are premiership contenders due to a thriller infront of a huge Laurie's crowd, the only light Laurie's saw the whole game, was scoring just before halftime to cut the Marist lead to just 7 points, from here Marist dominated with their quick style of play and hands to hands playing to end the game and shock Laurie's 52-21. Laurie's could not hold on, weak from the start, they should be really disappointed in themselves. Is this a turning point for the men from Ashgrove, beating Laurie's twice in the past 2 years?

Final score 52-21 to Marist

Marist played too much footy for SLC.
Unlike SLC they use ball movement to score points.
Tries from SLC were the usual forward barging over the line when in close range, rarely saw SLC run it.........too intent on kicking it back.
The better side won

Way too many aimless kicks from Lauries in that second half. When you’re chasing the game why would you keep giving it back to the opposition? You can’t score points without the ball.

I think we can safely say Ashgrove are the real deal. Have passed their two biggest tests putting on 55 vs Iona and 52 vs Lauries. Tricky away trip in Round 6 vs Villa. Get a win there and a Round 7 grand final awaits at Banyo.
