yeah yeah. I'd be shocked too, but the reports seem strong. Have also heard reports that the Rebels are throwing test money at state level players, which Byrnes and Weeks currently are.

Money aint everything. Just ask Drewie and Gits!

Firstly, Drewie hasn't gone home yet. What is the difference in him playing for WA or NSW?
Secondly, Gitts had a loverly package put together for him which certainly helped him go back to Canberra.
These two men didn't decide they were wrong and crawl back with their tail between their legs.

Also Weekes is a future international. Simple as that. I'm not too sure about Byrnes though, he seems to lack basic skills like catching (watch some game footage of him).

I don't really understand why the Rebels are allowed to throw that sort of money around (if that is true). If that continues (just like the 3rd party Force 'sponsorships') we will inevitably have one of the provinces go broke. (oh hang on.....)

also never said Drewie had gone home.

The comment was that both headed west for the money. Nothing else. Money. Then when the money dried up like a firepower tablet in a fuel tank, they opted to head elsewhere.

the rebels can throw money around currently due to the private structure of the club. while they offer the same base contract as the other states. the sponsors also pretty much own the team so the third party money is in a big pot to be divided up to whoever macqueen wants rather than finding individual sponsors for individual players. the money will dry up as the rebels get a foothold, just as it did out west. but for now, its not like there destroying teams and if a few plyers get an extra hundred grand good luck to em.

How good was big Robert Simmons - really stood up, showed a bit of mongrel. QLD to be very happy with his performance

If big Lawrie Weeks does make the cash grab. I would say Greg Holmes would be the logical permanent TH and James Slipper onto the bench. It would put us back a season or two, but Slipper has loads of potential - and is a massive man.

I think Holmes has been very good when he has come on at both THP and LHP. If Byrnes goes the the Reds are going to be very short in the lock department. This must be Vans last year and I can't think of any other locks in the squad.

As it stands I believe that Queensland has by far and away the best academy crop in the country. With the Rebels coming in next year - and the other states being partial to robbing us of our talent, we must become ruthless with out roster. In some cases the academy players are already at a level of ability more deserving of a senior contract than those currently holding them.

Players that need to be de-listed at seasons end; Tasi Luafutu, Dayna Edwards, Brando Va'aulu.

Players on the brink, playing for their careers; Ezra Taylor, Blair Connor, Morgan Turinui, Jack Kennedy, Greg Holmes.

Academy Players that need to be promoted for next season (Rookie contract or Senior contract); Ed Quirk, Jake Shatz, James Slipper, Ben Tapuai, Kimani Situati, Aiden Toua, Andrew Shaw.

Prioroties to stay in the Queensland academy system for 2011; Liam Gill, Paul Alo-Emile, Jono Lance, Albert Anae, Dominic Shipperley, Simon Morahan.

* Notes

- I watched Kimani recently in the 7s, and his strength in contact for his age is nothing short of outstanding. He could be anything.
- Tapuai & Toua are both outstanding young backs that by seasons end will have done their apprenticeship and will be ready for senior football, be in in Queensland or somewhere else.
-James Slipper is an outstanding young TH and will get plenty of minutes this season.
- Quirk & Shatz are arguably the two best young backrowers in Australia along with Gill and McAffrey of NSW.

thoughts??

not too bad of a prediction before the season.

Hey, I just wanted to say that this is a great thread and upholds all the values of Green and Gold Rugby. Insight, humour, and good temper when we disagree.

Love it. Let's get the mods to rename the "Thanks" button the "Virtual Beer" button. Not that they didn't do a cracking job in the update, good stuff guys.

I was a bit shocked when I logged on though.
