Good read, I can relate to that. Never been in a professional environment but played at 1st/2nd level for my school which was similar.

Can't agree more with how much you want to get away when the season ends but start to miss everything (especially trainings/weights - where all the good stories were) when you're gone.

Fox Sports News were saying Matt Shirvington has been called in as the sprint coach. Nothing in print yet too post up.

Big Al will be catching Greg Holmes in no time..

The HSBC Waratahs have hit the ground running on day one of the 2011 Super Rugby pre-season with Olympic sprinter Matt Shirvington joining the team as sprint coach.

The five-time Australian 100m champion started working with squad towards the tail end of the Tooheys New Shute Shield and will continue to work on the team’s speed throughout the pre-season.

After overseeing the backs go through their paces at Victoria Barracks this morning, Shirvington said that while there is a lot of talent in the team, the challenge is to ensure that the quest for speed does not overcome the Rugby focus.

“Some guys have fantastic technique and have obviously been exposed to some form of sprint conditioning before,” said Shirvington. “Some are very good, some need a lot of work but in saying that they don’t need to be masterful technicians, they don’t need to be the best sprinters in the world.

“[The training] needs to be functional for them and that’s the type of work I’m giving them. The last thing you want is for these guys to look like Usain Bolt but not be able to catch and pass a ball.

“These guys move in a way which is extremely fast from a standing position and we’ve seen in the game over the years that that turn of speed is becoming particularly useful to a team in terms of performance and results.”
Looking forward to his first season with the HSBC Waratahs, Ryan Cross said he enjoyed Shirvington’s sprint training which he will use in his search for a place in an already-talented NSW backline.

“He [Shirvington] obviously knows his stuff and he joined in a bit today which was good – it was good to see him hurting as well as us,” said Cross.

“The backline was pretty strong last year so there’s going to be a bit of competition but I’ll just train hard and hopefully I can find a spot.

“I played a lot of 12 last year and obviously I can play 13 so anywhere I can fit in would be good.

“Hopefully I can get in there somewhere, if not hopefully the 22. We need to put pressure on each other, play well and hopefully win the comp.”

Despite overcast skies hanging over the opening session, head coach Chris Hickey was excited the pre-season is finally underway.

“We’ll get enough hot days during summer so I’m sure the guys are enjoying kicking it all off with a bit of reprieve from the weather,” said Hickey.

“It’s been a long five-and-a-half months since the semi-final against the Stormers and even though we’re still three-and-a-half months away from the opening round against the Rebels, the start of the season is now in sight.

“While the squad has worked well and made strong gains in certain areas since the end of the last Super 14 season there’s still plenty of hard work ahead for us.

“We still have a few players completing rehab programs and a few new players who need to develop an understanding of how we play.

“The work we do in the next seven weeks will provide us with a sound foundation for the Super Rugby season ahead.

“There’s always plenty of opportunity for players in the pre-season and last year we saw players like Kane Douglas and Pat McCutcheon stake a claim for a spot in the team.”

They'll all need to be fast to keep up with a back 3 of Turner, Beale and Mitchell. Would there be a quicker combination anywhere?

Maybe Moses, try number two can be a length of the field try. :)

For a bloke with a bright career outside rugby and is getting on in age, It is great to see Al so enthusiastic about his rugby. Good on him. :thumb

Greg Jeledevou and John Grant are freaking quick too. Some genuine speedsters coming through the ranks..

Davies, Felsman and Luke Morahan would be the fastest academy back three in the all lands.

Yes, John Grant was only a fraction behind Lachie in the Gatorade Bolt a while back, so plenty of depth in speed it seems. To rehash on what was said on the thread about that race, it would be great to see an honest straight-up sprint race between the top Aussie candidates.

I'm still drunk on that champagne piece of burst, draw and pass from Gilbert and Schmoo on teh weekend.

Sivivatu, Masaga, Muliaina were a pretty rapid back 3 for the Chiefs this year

They didn't look too rapid around the 2min mark of this vid:

Btw, in looking for that clip I stumbled across this delectable piece of totty:

Sure, she has a funny accent but is there anything sexier than a pretty woman talking rugby? I'll have to keep an eye out for her this season. :D

Ohhhhhhh yeahh. Pretty to watch wasn't it! I shall have to take another gander at it tonight at home just to remind myself how good it was.

Old Lee got a boner. I might put on my baggy trousers and smuggle it into the village.
