At least with shoutbox, it's only one click away, and you can catch up quickly recent convos if you've been away for a few mins or so without the need to scroll greatly...

Just found another shoutbox that looks great. Written by the same bloke who wrote the wiki so it's no doubt well coded, and it runs with an IRC back end so I reckon that would take most of the load, and there would be IRC clients for mobile for sure.
