What's occurring with this on Foxsports (Greg Clark seems to be the worst offender)?

John Ulugia: He told ABCTV last year that he wanted his surname pronounced with a 'g' sound.
Daniel Halangahu: He and his brother (Antonio) have always had their surname pronounced with a 'g' sound in Sydney club rugby.

I know that in NZ, and other places, the 'g' isn't sounded when it is preceded with an 'n'.

I have sent an email to Foxsports about this.

I hear it a lot in English Football. Especially with the surnames of the dutchman. They even write it like that on their football jerseys. Johan Cruyff was another guy who surname they got wrong in Spain. But he did not seem to bothered about it as he's shirt said Cruyff as well.

The "g" is pronounced with an "n" sound for Pacific Islander names, which is why they do it.

What about pronouncing Tupou as "Two- poo" rather than "Two -poe"?

They used both pronunciations last night. The latter is correct, at least that is how it is pronounced in Tonga.

Clark is normally quite good at pronunciations, he is a New Zealander, is he not? They have a lot more expertise usually at PI pronunciations.

Was told by a family member of Daniel Halangahu's that it's pronounced ha-langa-hu not halan-ga-hu, but then I've heard Daniel say it the 2nd way....so who knows!

Pre-match when they list the sides the players should pronounce their names out in that little box they're shown in.

He is not a New Zealander, but did spend some time there early in his career.

as someone with an often mispronounced surname I can assume Hangers (and Ulugia and countless others) just gave up. Once the public keep hearing it mispronounced it's hard to change it
